I don't know that I can pick just one current favorite, but the bakery I absolutely miss the most has to be Goupil & DeCarlo (first in the East Village and then in Chelsea Market) - they had the most amazing croissants!

Dim Sum for 2 in Chinatown?
oh, and the fruit juices/shakes are great too. it's fun going to a restaurant (esp with a group) where you can really order anything that sounds remotely interesting and still leave with a small bill. i honestly don't think i've ever gone there with anyone who's left disappointed . . .
Dim Sum for 2 in Chinatown?
hmm, tough to explain - maybe i just ordered the wrong things at buddha boddhai, but i've really just found the food tastier at veggie dim sum. you definitely need to get the balance right - i.e. not order all fried things (as tempting as that may be) - but i've never been disappointed. in the non-fried camp, the steamed pork buns are amazing, love the rice dishes, and the rice flour rolls. dumplings are great too, just not as exciting (although ask about any special dumplings they might have that day - they're usually not on the menu). and for dessert, the fried banana dish with honey rocks. i guess i also thought that the regular menu items (noodles, soups, etc.) were way better there than bb, and it's nice sometimes to be able to add one of those into the mix (anything with black mushrooms especially!).
Dim Sum for 2 in Chinatown?
having been to both, i do not like buddha bodhai at all, but LOVE veggie dim sum house on pell - always happy going there!
The Best Croissant in New York
Does anyone remember a cafe in the East Village from years and years ago (maybe circa 2001?) that had an incredible croissant? I think they moved to Chelsea Market at some point, but I guess went out of business since then. Anyway, that was one amazing pastry . . .

Cook the Book: Spaghetti with Sardinian Bottarga
i do live near fairway, but whatever special caroline found isn't available anymore - they've got it for $17.99 for a little over 1.5 oz, which would be on par with the d&d price. so, alas, i will not be making the recipe above, although it has inspired me to perhaps make some sort of light lemon pasta with a bottarga accent/garnish . . .
Cook the Book: Spaghetti with Sardinian Bottarga
ok, where did you get that kind of steal :) anywhere in new york? . . .
- "That's right but the bottarga that I bought to test this recipe was $17.99 for 8 ounces." -
Cook the Book: Spaghetti with Sardinian Bottarga
is 8 oz of bottarga really right? it seems like that would cost about $100!!!
