McDonald's May Be Sued by Nutrition Watchdog Over Happy Meal Toys

Wow. This is insane! "Undercuts parental authority"? Really? Maybe parents have changed, but I don't remember my mom being that much of a pushover. If she didn't want to buy me something that I wanted, I didn't get it. End of story. If a whining child so easily gets her way, it doesn't bode well for the future of our country.

Besides, in the end, it's the parents' money, and it's the parents' decision. Banning toys would be treating a frivolous symptom while ignoring the larger disease behind obesity: poverty. Any tactic to "ban" obesity that does not address this undeniable fact is doomed to catastrophic failure.

Personally, I don't like and therefore rarely eat fast food, but I feel better knowing it's there. Why? Because, like freedom of speech, freedom of choice is my right as an American citizen. Food isn't a mind-altering substance. Eating a Big Mac once in a while, contrary to popular opinion, will not kill you. While I do agree that we as Americans have atrocious eating habits and suffer from an acute lack of exercise, the citizens' and the government's only duty on the matter is to educate and provide viable alternatives to that style of life.

Cook the Book: 'In The Green Kitchen'

Always prepare ahead of time... read the recipe if you're using one, mise en place, make sure you have all your ingredients and tools. This is probably the reason a lot of people think they can't cook-- they tried once, didn't prepare ahead of time, and ended up with a disaster!

The Nasty Bits: Sopaipillas

My dad used to eat these all the time when he lived in New Mexico. I've had them once when my mom made them many years ago, and if my spotty memory serves me right, they were DELICIOUS. I'm salivating at the memory.

'Cake Bible' Author Rose Levy Beranbaum Charged $25 'Forkage' Fee at The Breslin

I don't know, maybe I'm an unrefined cretin, but I think restaurants are businesses built upon hospitality. I think charging any kind of "forkage fee" is ridiculous, especially in economic times such as these. It's very off-putting to think that a little reciprocity is so hard to find these days. The best restaurants I go to may not El Bulli-quality food, but their friendliness and willingness to please contribute to their long-term success. I certainly don't appreciate feeling like every last cent is being squeezed out of me.

Doctors Propose 18% 'Pizza Tax' to Fight Obesity, Offset Health-Care Costs

This is getting ridiculous.

How about instead of making bad food more expensive, we figure out ways to make good food more affordable-- and accessible? Students could learn how to pick, cook, and eat fruits and vegetables in health and home ec classes. I know I didn't learn that stuff.

Besides, there are countless ag colleges and universities full of bright students and capable professors that are up to the challenge.

Cook the Book: 'My New Orleans'

Connecticut has a lot of excellent quality fruits and veggies, but my favorite are the apples! It's a tradition in our family to go to the farmer's market and pick up several pecks every week in the fall. We usually pick the stall clean. There as so many varieties of apples, from tart to super-sweet that far eclipse anything you can get at the supermarket. There's this fabulously ancient little store, only open during the fall, that specializes in pumpkins and apples. They have apple cider that you can watch the owner (who I bet has lived in our town his whole life) press on turn-of-the-century equipment and purchase it freshly pressed. Now THAT'S the true meaning of local!

What's the Worst Burn You've Endured While Cooking?

This is gonna sound weird: when I was a kid, I was making s'mores, when my marshmallow caught on fire. I went to blow it out and it exploded all over my hand. I still have the scar! I've never had it happen or seen it happen again, thank goodness.
