Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 87: Do Weights Help You Lose Weight?
if you're not a member of a gym, i'd second the jillian michaels suggestion. you do need to invest in some free weights, but her workouts are GREAT. you WILL be sore the next morning, but think of it as a good thing! if you can get yourself to stick to the 30 day shred routine, good for you - her 'no more trouble zones' dvd is also fantastic. i saw a difference in my arms within a matter of weeks. the dvds are usually between $8-10 on amazon. give it a shot.
Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'
mine was one my mom gave me when i moved off campus into my first apartment, i think it was called the College Student's Guide to Cooking or something like that. i used it to teach myself how to make scrambled eggs -- seriously, i'd never made them before then. ohhh, how times have changed...
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 84: Do You Ever Scare Yourself Into Eating Less?
good work this week, ed. i seriously do NOT know how you do it. working in SE HQ....i would have no self-control at all. not overeating in the face of deliciousness is a constant struggle for me as well and i have yet to fine the discipline i really need. reading this every week is inspiring for us readers too!

smitten kitchen was my first, and my favorite. but SE, PWC and the girl who ate everything are not far behind!

Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
pasta! always good
um, last night the 'don't judge me' meal was Trader Joe's mac n' cheese with cut up hot dogs and broccoli mixed in. it's actually known as a delicacy in the hyper-local region of my apartment.
Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds: The True Champion of Breakfast Cereals?
SO glad others share my passion for HBofO! I have long said it's the greatest cereal ever...so delicious. The 'Just Bunches' version is also great for yogurt. Cuts out those pesky flakes and gives you the real deal :)
Cook the Book: '100 Best Vegetarian Recipes'
Oh easy, falafel OR bagels with cream cheese, which also happen to be my two favorite foods on the face of the earth. I don't eat a lot of meat in general, so I'd looove the book!
Cook the Book: 'Canal House Cooking, Vol. 1'
a new favorite i picked up on smitten kitchen: bell peppers, red onion marinated in red wine vinegar, feta cheese, grape tomatoes, zucchini. topped with the vinegar the onion was marinated in and olive oil. i've been making this every week!
also, a simple fresh tomato with balsamic never gets old.
Served: Already Nostalgic for My Awesome Job
i graduated from school last year - it's scary but you get the hang of this whole real world thing. love the blog, best of luck.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 64: The Road Not Taken, The Food Not Eaten
ohhh taim and olympic pitaaaaa. although i've never been wowed by the latter's schwarma.
congrats on the continuing loss!
Served: The Ballsy Waitress
completely agree with happyscrappy - if money's tight, that's fine. but then you do not go out to eat! if you're going to a restaurant with waiter service, and that service is up to your standards, you should be tipping around 20%. period. recession or no recession, you didn't HAVE to go to a restaurant.
Cast Iron help
i usually just rinse with water, then throw in a healthy amount of coarse kosher salt and rub that around. it actually does a great job! then wipe it down with a little more water and put it away. every once in a while i do the oil and oven method as well.
Norma, Sarabeth or Isabella?
skip norma's, not worth the price!
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 60: How Much Should I Weigh? Part II
great goal, ed. you can do it, just give yourself time and be patient.
You live where?
grew up in Silver Spring, MD, went to school in Boston, and have been bouncing around between Boston, LA and New York over the last 2 years. Made my home in Brooklyn but recently moved back home to Silver Spring for a job in DC. Hoping to move into the city soon enough, but am seriously missing the NYC life....
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 59: How Much Should I Weigh?
it's a good question. i'm 23 yo woman, a hair over 5 feet, and i weigh about 134. That's about 20 pounds from what I weighed three years ago, and I'm hoping to maintain. But most literature says a woman of my height should weigh more like 115-125. But I feel good, I bike, I run (half marathons!), I walk...would I look a little more shapely at 10 pounds less, probably, it'd be kinda nice to be even lighter, but do I HAVE to be? Am I still considered healthy? I think so.
Arepa Crawl in Williamsburg
caracas is probably my favorite latin restaurant in new york. i'm pretty sure i've tried everything on the menu at this point! and the sauce is INCREDIBLE. i've actually left the brooklyn location with two bottles (shhh. but i tipped generously!!)
and seriously i don't know what's up with LA being completely without arepas. to get my fix when i was living there i found a great joint in valley somewhere but it has since closed. poor west coasters!
Win Tickets to This Year's 'Village Voice' Choice Eats
venezuelan at caracas arepas bar!
Cook the Book: 'Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating'
going along with tons of other people here - i eat far, far less meat than i used to.
his recipes are also fantastic and simple, so I have been using both 'htce and htce vegetarian' to make more of my own meals!
Cook the Book: 'Almost Meatless'
couscous simmered in chicken stock, with broccoli and walnuts. yummm. i want this book SO badly! i've been waiting for it to come out for months!!
Good Falafel Place in NYC
Taim! On Waverly. Soooooo delicious. I'm also gonna throw one in for Olympic Pita on 37th st.
Do not take your friend to Chickpea! Gross.

Union Square Falafel Battle: Maoz, Pita Joe, Moshe's, and Rainbow
Zach, I agree - Olympic is another falafel joint I'm guilty of visiting three times in a week...the laffa is effing incredible.
Union Square Falafel Battle: Maoz, Pita Joe, Moshe's, and Rainbow
My aunt and uncle live in Union Square and I lived with them for a time, but I still manage to find myself there constantly. And yet somehow, Rainbow went unnoticed by me until quite recently. Still have to try it. Maoz is far superior Pita Joe in my opinion, and while I haven't tried Moshe's downtown location, I thought the midtown truck was pretty good (certainly a bargain!) To me, the gem of Maoz is really the veggie bar, but it's still a damn good falafel. My personal Maoz record is four times in one week. It can't hold a candle to Taim, but I recently tried Mamoun's for the first time and was kind of underwhelmed, frankly.
Chickpea, in my opinion, SUCKS. Not to be toooo harsh, but I'm sorry, those falafels are baked, an insult to falafels everywhere!
Legendary NYC Vegetable Peeler Salesman Joe Ades, 75
aw i love this guy! my aunt and uncle have lived in union square for decades and i lived with them for awhile....every saturday at the market i'd chill with joe for a few minutes - gotta admit i never bought a peeler though. rip joe!
We Talk to Bobby Flay About Bobby's Burger Palace
Well first of all I was excited to eat at Bobby Flays place so I had high expectations but that shouldn't a affect my review. I ate at the Lake Grove restaurant. I ordered a blue burger medium rare, a dark chocolate shake and onion rings. The burger was actually raw! and the bottom half of the roll was not usable because it was saturated and I was unable to pick it up. I sent the burger back and this time I got one that was well done. They can't seem to get the cooking process right. Even that bottom half of the roll was wet. The shake was nothing more than ice cream stirred up to be soft, it was too thick to drink, and surprisingly for that price ($5.00) it was pretty small. The onion ring order was also small for the price and not so great, not crunchy or that tasty, rather bland. I have to say for the value, the whole meal was definitely not worth the price and the atmosphere was very cold and uninviting. I will definitely not be visiting this place again and I will not recommend this place to anyone either. I can honestly say that burger king is better than this place. Sorry Bobby, I think you better visit this location and straighten out your good name.

Top Ten Worst Halloween 'Candies'
I disagree about a lot of the candy items mentioned here.
I, for one, LOVE the fun-sized (or mini, if you prefer) candies. It's a tiny bit of something insanely tasty, enough to give pleasure without causing tummy pains. When I was a young'un and I went trick-or-treating, one house gave out mini Clark bars. Yum-o-delish! I polished those off first.
I think the chewy peanut butter kisses taste absolutely divine.
Candy corn, I think is plenty of tasty, as are the candy pumpkins made of candy-corn base. Think little dollops of hardened cake-frosting.
As for apples and raisins, those I didn't mind in the least.
However, some items, I do agree about.
Toothbrushes -- a boring reminder
Religious pamphlets -- disappointing and WEIRD to boot.
Packages of "normal" food -- oh, for crying in Manhattan, what kid wants to receive a can of baked beans or a box of oat bran in his little plastic jack-o-lantern.
One time I received cough drops -- and not the Ludens or Pine Bros or Smith Bros or F&Fs, which are tasty and could pass as hard candy (as can the Ricolas). These were nasty little green pellets that were -- and tasted like -- MEDICATION. Like I said, for crying in Manhattan! For crying in Manhattan, Chicago, and San Francisco
Oh well. At least I didn't get a ROCK

Location: Brooklyn, NY
About: Food=awesome. I spend waaay too much money on it, but hey. Gotta have passions, right? When I'm not eating, I'm usually writing about television or strolling around Manhattan or Brooklyn...uh, looking for new places to eat.
Favorite foods: Bagels. Eggplant. Chocolate chip cookies. Red bell peppers. Pretty much any type of sandwich. Exotic bread. Hummus. Tomatoes. Also, I could eat Mexican food every day and never get sick of it, ever.
Last bite on earth: An everything bagel with veggie cream cheese. And some really exquisite, rich, decadent chocolate.

smitten kitchen was my first, and my favorite. but SE, PWC and the girl who ate everything are not far behind!
