Sheet Pizza - Regional?

They have it in eastern PA in the Wilkes-Barre area, places like Victory Pig and Pizza Perfect. Haven't had either since the mid-90s when we moved from the state, though.

Not Your Abuelita's Tortillas

Considering masa harina is used in the dough, and it seems it retains some of the characteristics of a corn tortilla, do you think this dough would work in a tortilla press? I use a rolling pin for flour tortillas and pita, but I was wondering if you think it would be hearty enough dough.

Whole Foods is sneaking up the prices

@jettabugfox: I lived in Maine from February 96 - May 06. When we first moved there from PA, we immediately noticed the higher prices. My mom made a comment on her first shopping trip to the nearby Hannaford (then Shop N Save), and their response was, "Well, they gotta truck it upta Maine." Understood, especially for fresh, seasonal produce, but we were talking about stuff like a box of cereal!

When I moved to the DC area, prices were more reasonable, especially considering the quality (I miss Wegmans!). Here in Florida, Publix is okay for a lot of items and have some good deals if you check the ads, but sometimes the Super Target has better quality produce. I prefer to go to Whole Foods & The Fresh Market, and a local establishment called Freshfields Farm has phenomenal values on meat & produce.

Candy A Day: Mary Janes

I enjoy Mary Janes. It was a candy my dad loved, as did I. He would always raid my trick-or-treat basket, making sure the candy was "safe." I'd have to watch him or he'd take all the candies from his childhood from me! The appeal for me was, and is still, the way they stick to my molars. Forget fillings. These are all about memories. As are Necco wafers, Fatfudge! :)

Do You Have a Breadmaker You Use and Like?

I have an old Magic Chef that my mom bought many years ago. She gave it to me when I moved out after college a little over 5 years ago. Baking the bread in the unit is okay, but like others who have posted, I use it primarily for dough. I'll use it for doughs from bagel to baguettes and pita to pizza. The heating element helps speed along the rise, especially considering I live in Orlando and a tabletop rise in AC isn't going to be fantastic. I use it weekly no problem, especially with the pita bread/chip consumption in this house!

Japanese Snacks: Toys and Candy

@thatgrrl - You can find many at Asian grocers, and depending on where you live, even the local grocery or Super Target will carry items like Pocky! There are also online shops that sell Glico products- just do a quick search on Google and you will find many!

Japanese Snacks: Toys and Candy

Thanks for the Garbage Pail Kids reference! I even still have them as well as hockey and baseball cards. Oh how that gum was deliciously roof-of-mouth rippyI love the snacks with toy nowadays, but it seems they are few and far between. Around 10 years ago I could order chocolate covered biscuits and they would come with a cute charm of an nime kitty or such sitting in a tea cup, or rolled in a pastry. Apart from that, I'm happy with some Botan Ame. That was my first foray into Japanese treats nearly 20 years ago!

Poll: Whole Wheat Crust - Way or No Way?

The pizza place I once worked at, the whole wheat dough came in frozen. Regular was made from scratch. Besides, what's the point when you're slathering it in cheese and fatty meats? Indulge for crying out loud.

United States Of Pizza: Maine

Jason's Pizza was my go-to in Bangor, even though I worked at a competitor for a few years. Whenever I visit Maine I stop by for a pie. Pat's is okay, but it's certainly college town pizza. I preferred Bear Brew's brick oven pizzas in Orono, but haven't had those in 5-6 years. Whenever I'm in Bar Harbor and at Geddy's, I would go with the lobster roll, although I've found better ones up the road at Rupununi. I'll have to try their pizza next time I visit.
