Who We're Cheesed Off at Now: D.C. Councilman Jim Graham
As a longtime Adams Morgan drinker I agree Grahamzilla couldn't be more wrong about this; try actually getting some police on 18th Street after 9pm. As it stands now, the street is virtually gridlocked all evening on weekends as frat boys from Fairfax and teenagers from the hood prowl around looking to beat up strangers and each other. The police (when they're around) stay parked up at Columbia Rd and couldn't even get a cruiser down the street if they wanted to.
Furthermore, I take guilty pleasure in the jumbo slice. It's so good after 15 beers, even though I know it's so wrong.

Co. Company's Jim Lahey Responds to 'New York Times' One-Star Review
What really bothers me is a restaurateur referring to his own food as "dogshit". Show some class.
New York Times' Frank Bruni on Co. Company
So how about Lahey's reaction to this review? (You can view it on Eater.) I don't know anything about the guy but wow he comes off as a real asshole. I think I'll check out Tonda, Keste and the Bkyln newcomers before I go to Co. anytime soon.
Motorino, Artichoke Basille's Win 'Time Out New York' Eat Out Awards
I agree, boomshanka, with one condition... when it's on. Artichoke has always been inconsistent, especially with their sicilian slices. to be fair, i haven't been in a few months, so maybe things have changed.
Astoria's Rizzo's Offering 50-Cent Anniversary Specials Starting Saturday
Rizzo's is Steinway between 30th Avenue and 31st Avenue. Never heard of City Avenue or Dunway Street. Just a heads up...
Openings: Little Luzzo's
ok so i've gone about five times here on my way home from work; thursday nights around 8:30. i'll preface this by saying a) i've never loved the original luzzo's--i think they turn out good pies but nothing spectacular b) i lived for some time in this neighborhood and save for one small slice joint long since gone, it's a pizza wasteland c) i hold a low expectation for by the slice pizza in manhattan--i appreciate artichoke and vincenz when they're on, but otherwise you are pretty much destined for mediocrity.
so then... little luzzo's is making probably the most enjoyable slice for sale north of 14th street. make no mistake, the sauce is totally meh. no flavor at all, if anything close to the Roma distributor sauce you can get in any mall in the U.S.
but oh man, the crust is fantastic for a gas oven. good char, pillowy and just the right amount of chewy. i like that for a $2.50 basic plain slice you get good dollops of fresh mozz and a drizzle of olive oil (that i witnessed them applying on the base of the cornicione from a squeeze bottle, so it seeps down across the cut lines). even a reheated slice is crisp with some good chew and a good mix of cheese and crust flavor. wish that sauce was a bit more robust...
bottom line: this place is kicking 99% of the by the slice joints in the borough. the main problem i've found is they have a lot of pies sitting out that have obviously been there for hours. i'm not messing with those. one night i went and got a reheated slice right as a fresh pie came out topped with sausage. wish i could have gotten that too but i'm on a pizza diet. :(
there's never anyone in this place, which is a shame since i want them to do well. wish i still lived in the 'hood because a delivery pie would trump the other local options (a ray's and zesty--the antichrist of decent pizza). if you're ever in the area i would be extremely interested in getting your $.02.
Dear Slice: 'Kesté Better Than Co. Company'
lol paulie, you are quickly becoming my new pizza guru next to kuban and mr. varasano. that line about only having a carry on is priceless. when you gonna open your own place? the upper east side could use you.
Jimmy Fallon Twitters About Getting Kicked Out of NYC Pizzeria
i hate hearing about restaurant slights online because there are always two sides to the story and commenting online usually causes people to engage in hyperbole. but if this is true, sure, terrible business practice. not too familiar with mr. fallon outside of his SNL work but he seems to genuinely love pizza (which gives him an a+ in my book) and i'd politely steer him to company, motorino and una pizza for his future slice chomping endeavors.
The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?
did it today. so proud. still burping up heat hours later and drinking some beers. worried about how i'm gonna feel in a few hours. we didn't use yogurt or milk or anything to pad the heat except for some rice and naan. i find a nice glass of coke helps a lot, maybe its the sugar or the carbonation? water does nothing. i actually enjoyed the taste of it too, but the worst part was that it's so hot it's hard to even think straight. my friend and i would be in mid sentence and just trail off, losing our concentration. my advice to those who want to try this: be sure that you really actually can tolerate heavy spice. i eat spicy food frequently but the sheer buildup of heat with this dish is very overwhelming. also don't rush yourself but don't fill up on acoutrements like bread because it is a very filling dish. also when you do finally finish, take your time and rest a bit. we really savored our free beers and within about half an hour we felt fine but full. great way to spend an afternoon though! and i must add that the service and quality of this restaurant is really good, especially for a 6th street indian joint. i'll definitely go back for other (less painful) dishes in the future.

i dunno moe, i'd give him a few weeks at least. think about all the work in opening a restaurant for the first time, especially one with this many expectations. i'm sure he wants to be there making the pies, but has a ton of stuff to deal with.

Ko Vs. Ssam Bar
i'll chime in for the spicy sausage and rice cakes at ssam. great hangover lunch but a bit hefty at 18 bucks. ko is a nice once a year meal but i like that at ssam you can get out for as little or as much as you like.

What Your Pizza Delivery Driver Won't Tell You
I don't tip delivery on a percentage. It's always 3 bucks on top of the total, unless the order is huge and cumbersome or the weather is really crappy out.
What Your Pizza Delivery Driver Won't Tell You
14 is wrong, as well. I delivered pizza (in NC) for over a year and trust me, I could eat it once a day for the rest of my life. Also as much as I hate to admit it, if you're an attractive woman you can get anything you want. Imagine it, a bunch of stoned college guys sitting around a pizza shop all afternoon bored out of their skulls. We knew which addresses were the hot girls and we used to fight over who got to make the run. They always got free soda and sometimes even an extra pie.
Chick-fil-A
ugh grew up in the land of chick-fil-a. only thing i like about them is their commercials.
seriously, folks. bojangles blows CFA out of the water in every way.
Frank Bruni's Pizza Moment with Co. and Motorino
I consistently find it *amazing* how often I encounter indifferent service in NYC. It's as if servers here feel that they can get away with it because of the sheer amount of potential clientele. When I travel to other major cities I never see such a proliferation of this kind of treatment, even in bustling restaurants. I used to think people who got poor service were poor customers to begin with, but since moving here... wow. I mean, there are times where I had to laugh because I just was floored by the servers' apathy.

Tried Primo Italiano in Reston per a previous post. Surprisingly good Italian-American food, worthy of a more serious restaurant, hidden in a counter service deli. I would go back for their pastas for sure.
As for the pizza, quite frankly, I'd never order it again. The crust is too squishy and both the cheese and sauce are standard issue. Almost every casual Italian-American resto in the burbs makes pizza, and this is a bit below average. For the poster who recommended it, I think Italian Cafe in Falls Church is much better. Still, none of these places put the same effort into the crust as a serious pizza parlor.

2 Amys is still tops, not just for DC, but would be hard to beat anywhere.
I love ordering an onion and olive pie from Vace. Getting a reheated slice does not do any pizza justice. They put the cheese under the tomato sauce here. Carry-out only. Finding excellent pizza can be difficult anywhere, especially if it is not thin crust.
Washington Deli is ok for what it is, but really, not serious at all.
The Atomica at Pizzeria Paradiso is excellent.
All the rest are ok to very good. have not tried Primo Italiano in Reston (mentioned above but this is the first I've heard of it) or American Flatbreads which is the Vermont place now in the VA suburbs which gets high marks.
The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?
My sister and I did the P'haal challenge today. We each finished in about 20, maybe 25 minutes. She was sweating and her eyes were tearing. I didn't sweat but I actually had two bouts of dizziness, my hands shook a little and my ears clogged up for about two minutes towards the end. But we got through it pretty easily. Our trick was not to touch the water or any drink at ALL. The only thing we added was maybe 1/4 of the rice bowl.
MY trick was to save the chicken for the end. The sauce did NOT soak into the chicken and by the end the temperature had gone down considerably, so the chicken almost had a cooling effect.
I do NOT recommend anyone does this at the 53rd St. location - they don't have a liquor license so they gave us a coupon for a free beer...which we can redeem down on 6th St. So we have to go to the Village anyway. That was a big disappointment. They also didn't take our picture - we have to email it to the guy in the Village.

Washington Deli is opening up a new store on 5830 Georgia Ave NW. I hope they can maintain the same standard of the one on 20th and K St.

That thing looks awesome.
Also, is it just me, or has Slice been posting reviews fewer and farther between lately?
Sicilian Slices at Boston’s Galleria Umberto
I think I agree that Umberto's is quite good. I like that they cook this pie in a thin baking sheet. I will have to try and bake one like this at home and post up a review
Sicilian Slices at Boston’s Galleria Umberto
It pains me to say this b/c I grew up on Umberto's. Pizza is not the reason to go. Their rice balls and pizzettas are bar none the best. Say hi to Ralph and Paul when you go and get the best arancini you'll ever have but if you want a slice of sicilian you have to go to Armando's.
Sicilian Slices at Boston’s Galleria Umberto
At first glance this pie looks lie lasagna! This is a very healthy Sicilian style pizza.

Actually, it looks like something you might buy at Sbarros. Or get in the cafeteria at work.
I'm sure it's a lot better than that, but that's what it looks like.

I'm so glad there's FINALLY something food related in Boston.
I was getting sick of always hearing about the food in Chicago and L.A.
Boston really doesn't get enough credit as a foodie town.
Who We're Cheesed Off at Now: D.C. Councilman Jim Graham
But if they get rid of the jumbo slices, then 18th street won't be covered with pizza early Saturday and Sunday mornings. Will Councilman Graham take it upon himself to ensure that DC's rats are properly cared for if he succeeds in eliminating one of their primary food sources?
Who We're Cheesed Off at Now: D.C. Councilman Jim Graham
@santoslhalper: I know, right? Seemed to me that the easy, don't-have-to-make-a-new-law-just-enforce-those-that-are-already-existing solution would be more police presence in the area. But as I don't live in D.C., I have no what the current situation is. And not that I advocate this, but the other, more logical solution would be that Graham introduce legislation to limit bar hours. Of course the bar/restaurant lobby would fight that tooth and nail, whereas a handful of scattered pizzeria owners are an easy target.

Cheap-Slice Showdown: St. Marks 2 Bros. Pizza vs. 99 Cent Fresh Pizza
jessc is 100% spot on. couldnt agree more.
I have been working on 38th and 9th for 8 years now, and for 5 of those years I was loyal to the old dollar slice joint on 36th and 8th (anyone remember that one, those guys were hard core, but awesome). SIDE NOTE: I once saw the guy who ran that joint come to the street and throw down with a guy who took a slice then didnt want to pay. i mean those guys were hard core.
back to slice challenge. 99 cent is hands down a better slice. i have tried 2 brothers 2 times now, giving them the benefit of the doubt, and both times, the slice they gave me out of their HOT PRETZEL BOX OF NASTINESS, was blah. i mean edible but nothing like the 99cent slice.
99cent condiments are awesome, the hot sauce and Parmesan combination is ILL. ANOTHER SIDE NOTE: 99 cent was being a little cheap in taking away the parmesan for a few months before 2 bros came to down, and i gave them shit for that on every visit, but in their defense they are serving a mad cheap slice.
also in case anyone was wondering they deliver those bad boys at $8 a pie, damn!
2 bros, in my opinion is just jumping on a band wagon, and their fancy sign, expensive rent, and "i want a peice of the pie" attitude will quickly die out in the one remaining hard core part of hells kitchen.
99cent, all I ask is that when 2 brothers dies in the next year, you dont take away the Parmesan again ;)....promise?

I don't get out to Reston, VA very often, but I'll keep that in mind.
If you're looking for NY style slices in DC, I found it at the Washington Deli on 20th and K St. I decided to bite the bullet and get on the subway to check the place out (closest one is Farragut West station) yesterday for lunch and it is really close. It reminded me a little of the slices at Joe's on Carmine St in NYC. The underside was nice and crisp with some char, no tip sag. when I went in, they had a rack of pies in the back counter and a bunch of pies up front at the display counter. It was worth the trip even thought it isn't the most convenient for me during lunch hour. it literally took me an hour and 7 minutes total time.
Top Chef's Spike Mendelsohn Opening D.C. Pizzeria
You have to go outside DC to get the best pizza. Primo Italiano in Reston, VA just outside DC has the best pizza by far.
I also strongly recommend Crozet Pizza outside of Charlottesville if you are ever in that area. You need a reservation because they only cook one pizza at a time.
Top Chef's Spike Mendelsohn Opening D.C. Pizzeria
oh man...I didn't know that Vace had a deli store in Bethesda, MD! That's fairly convenient to me since about a 20 minute drive away from Bethesda. I just wish that downtown DC had more places that sell good slices (or at least convenient to where I work). I'm guessing maybe some of these mom and pop pizzerias can't afford the rent?
Top Chef's Spike Mendelsohn Opening D.C. Pizzeria
Moroni is pretty decen but in the middle of no where is right. Pretty sure that Dora (from paradisio at Dupont) and her husband own the place - both learned pizza at Paradisio. And yes, Vaca is fine good serviceable slice pizza served up in a fine italian deli. And Red Rocks is two blocks west of the same Metro (Columbia heights) as pete's.
Top Chef's Spike Mendelsohn Opening D.C. Pizzeria
Thanks one and all on the 2 Amys feedback. Sounds like I'm gonna have to find out for myself and hope it's a hit and not a miss day. Certainly sounds like it'll be hit day at Nationals Ballpark (What no naming rights?!?!?!?!).
Ciao,
Paulie Gee
