Video: 'Look Around You - Water'

This series was brilliant. Wish more people knew about it. I prefer the educational video format of the first season to the news magazine format of the second. But the casserole sketch was pretty funny too.

That pic makes me crave some of Freddy's chicken and rice. Outstanding.

Vesta on 21st St/30th Ave. It's a small Italian wine bar. The food is always amazing and the people who work there are so nice and welcoming.

I gotta get to Sweet Afton - everyone keeps raving about it.

Confirmed! :) And I LOVE the idea of putting currants in a fruit pie. This might make me try to conquer my fear of pie crust...

meem - I'm gonna make scones with mine and the other berries but I'm not sure if this will work out since they are fresh and not dried. That was the only thing I could come up with since we have only small amounts.

PS - Surprise! I'm now a SE poster! :)

I used to do the Jello with milk on top also. I still prefer that over Jello with whipped cream.

Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo

I made chicken adobo for the first time recently and loved it - the only weird thing about it was that the garlic turned blue. I found out that was a side effect from the vinegar. Weird, but very tasty!

Bare burger down the street from Sweet Afton has ammmmmmazing burgers. Love love love Sweet Afton. Blackbirds on 30th and 41st st is one of my favorite bars, they have great beer and fantastic food. Even though it has a stupid name Winegasm is a great wine bar, thats on 37th street and Broadway. I always enjoy Brick cafe, 33rd st and 31st ave, for a chill dinner and a glass of wine.

But seriously, for burgers, try Bare Burger, it is out of this world great.

Thanks Everyone,

I've been to Vesta and I Love the fact that they source most of their food locally including the roof top grown lettuce they get from Brooklyn.

i made this once. it was a bit sweet for me, but i made it with the jam instead of the fresh currants, which would probably be much better.

I, too, was amazed by how few recipes I could find calling for red currants.

jello with a middle layer of sour cream, bananas and strawberries (from the freezer) - for school lunch, a scrambled egg sandwich made that morning on white bread with, yes, ketchup - pork roll and swiss cheese with relish and ketchup on english muffins for dinner - still love them all!

Dinner Tonight: Chicken Adobo

@simplysw1130 It depends on the size of the pot, I think. It shouldn't be necessary with a snug pot, but it won't hurt to add water, since you can always cook it off later when you reduce the sauce.

Red Currant Recipes

They really are great with the tart apples. I don't add too much sugar or spices so the pie filling stays tart and you can still really taste the currants.

Oh, and for the lemon-yogurt cake I mentioned above, I meant to say I sprinkle the currants on BEFORE baking, so they cook into the cake.

Don't fear pie crust!! It is not as scary as it might seem! :)

are balsamic vinegar and soy sauce the only liquid ingredients to add to the pot w/ the chicken and garlic? do you need to add a little water to make sure there's enough liquid to 1/2 way cover the chicken?

sandwich- Please confirm your full understanding that any discussion of food that you post must be followed by a sampling of aforementioned food at my apartment. With that said, I look forward to tasting these so called scones that you speak of... Welcome aboard, sis!

sadiepix- Thanks for the suggestions! Putting them in an apple pie sounds amazing!

Red Currant Recipes

I have this recipe saved for when my currants come in (soon!) as it looked so good!
http://www.latartinegourmande.com/2006/07/17/petits-gateaux-aux-groseilles-red-currant-mini-cakes/

What I usually do with them that is tried and true for me is to mix them with another fruit in a pie, or sprinkle them over the top of a lemon-yogurt cake and serve it with more thick yogurt that has been sweetened with honey and lemon.
Red currant and granny smith apple pie is wonderful, as is currant with cherry and peach.

Have fun!

Mac & cheese with a can of tuna... which I still love to this day.

I only eat french toast with granulated sugar on it. No syrup, butter, fruit, nothing. Just granulated sugar.

Ultimate favorite sandwich: cream cheese and jelly. Grape Jelly.

Graham crackers broken up in a bowl and drenched in milk for breakfast.

Not too weird, just not common. :P

We also had the bologna/pickle/mayo sandwich filling growing up in Kansas. Though it was usually saved for traval occasions - we'd pack a cooler with the hash and a loaf of bread and stop at picnic tables to eat. I also loved the potato chip/mayo sandwiches.

I made this tonight and it was delicious. I used white balsamic, and finished it off on the grill, though the skin was plenty crispy without the grill time. This recipe will be a keeper!

We too had SOS (but ours was Budding sliced lunch meat with a can of cream of something on toast), dad too implied it was some sort of Army way of doing things. Also, when we were sick, we could request "milk toast" which was basically cinnamon-sugar toast, cut up into bite sized squares drenched in milk until soggy. And mac-n-cheese with ketchup. Chicken noodle soup with ketchup. Eggs with ketchup. You may be sensing a theme.

Seeing all the references to bologna reminds me that when I was very small we had a maid and she would give me whatever I wanted to eat. It always really annoyed my mom when she found out that I had bologna with ketchup on it for lunch. Not a sandwich, just the bologna.

My sister taught me to eat hot dogs right out of the freezer and to put salt on sliced pickles.

My family still likes something we call "weenie stew" which is basically a red gravy with hot dogs cooked in it. You eat it on spaghetti. But that's the only thing in this post that I still eat, though it's been years since I've had weenie stew. I wonder if I have any red gravy in the freezer.......
