Wow, how much did you guys dress that picture up? That does not look like a burger I've ever seen from Blimpie!

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

Boy I love that book, I really wanna win this, anyways, here goes!

Here are my favorite ingredients on a burger: Guacamole, Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo, Bacon, AMERICAN cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, that's it! Nothing else will do! There are rumors A1 sauce is great with burgers, but I have yet to try that out. I get the impression fried plantain would be good too, fried, thin and juicy! The most important thing in a burger is well-seasoned, tasty meat. For some reason, Canadian burgers taste better, and I have no idea why.

One time I asked this waitress in Australia for American cheese on my burger, and I got the dirtiest look! I didn't have decent burgers for one month there. I don't count McDonald's and Hungry Jack's as decent burgers, none of the decent places had that cheese. It really is the best cheese for burgers IMO, and I'm not being jingoistic or anything, so don't hate me!

IMO, the less sophisticated burgers are, the better. That's my opinion!

Hamburger America: Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Blimpy Burger is the most overrated burger joint in the world. Couple that with the attitude(the guy must have been in a good mood when I came by, but he was still a jerk), and I have no reason to patronize the place. I'll go places where the help are happy to see you and the food is good, yet reasonably priced.

The only people that like Blimpy Burger are the ones that probably thought wearing trucker caps were cool back in the day. What was it that trend was called, "blue collar chic?" How insulting.

I asked a couple normal people, and most said Blimpy Burger was horribly overrated. When they went to school there, they ate at the place once and just never came back. My brother told me he used to walk all the way down Liberty for Dinersty all the time, and I told him I did the exact same thing.

The only people that like places like Blimpy Burger are the limousine liberal yuppies that think they're eating like normal people when they go there. I can go to Tony's if I want to get junk like that.

LunaPierCook, you're the reason why most normal people hate Ann Arbor.

I've never seen a burger that nice at Blimpy Burger. How long did you spend posing this?

The place is overrated yuppie fare anyways!

I forgot to mention that it has bacon on it, too. Unfortunately my friend was the one that got it eat it.
Thanks for using my photo!

Great photo. I recently had a triple with American cheese, grilled onions, and hot peppers. My wife wouldn't let me get the egg on it. And, it wasn't dry. Next time I get the Kaiser roll. Also, I see that the amateur negative comment troll has chimed in with its no cents worth. And, I agree with paanta.

It won't be dry. There are two ways to have a moist burger. The first is to cook it properly. The second is to involve so much fat that it comes out approximately the texture of butter with burnt beef bits in it.

Goddamn, Blimpy makes some amazing burgers. Not a traditional big-medium-rare-patty sort of experience, but truly amazing nonetheless.

My (Sort Of) First Taste of White Castle's Burgers

@KevinB: It's a saying...I know you weren't asking seriously, but I'm not sure how else to answer that.

My (Sort Of) First Taste of White Castle's Burgers

I worked in detroit for a while; about once a month I'd drive out to White Castle for a sack. If I ate them every day, or even every week, I'd probably be sick of them, but now that I'm back in Toronto, we can only get them on family trips to the US. And we found one in Ohio that shares space with Church's chicken which has vanished from Canada, and was our favourite fried chicken. A wing and a thigh from Church's and two cheeseburgers - great road food.

And I'm curious - to all those people who said "they taste like ass", where, exactly, did you learn what "ass" tastes like?

If you're eating white castle before 10pm, you're doing it wrong.

Never ketchup on white castles either, just bun, onions pickles and cheese.

The chicken sandwiches with honey mustard are good, as well as the cheese sticks, but you'll want to pass on their "marinara".

WC's also has some of my favorite fast food fries. love the kinkle cut.

Like they say "You gotta get to White Castles before the crazies do!"

Robyn, you must get the fried clam strips next time!!! I love them; crunchy, chewy, and salty. I used to get them all the time in HS with my friend who insisted on getting onion rings so we got our veggies.

I have said this before on Slice (regarding Co/UPN style vs. Lomardis brick oven vs. a plain slice) and the same holds true for burgers. There is a time and a place for all burgers, for me.. it is circumstantial! Sometimes I want some LaFrieda meat, sometimes I want a pub burger, sometimes I even crave a McDs, and yeah... sometimes I actually crave a steamed bun, oniony White Castle slider. Just how it goes! Now I might get a LaFrieda burger 10 times before I hit McDs or WC, but still.

White Castle burgers are pretty unique. They punch holes in them to create the "steaming" process. Very different from a regular burger that is normally seared on a grill, WC Sliders have that uniform gray color and texture, which most people seem to either love or hate.

Personally, I love and miss them since there's no White Castle in my area. Get the fries drowned in cheese whiz, amazing. Shakes are good too. All of course tasting the best around 4 in the morning.

Also I've never had a fine dining / trendy "slider" (and I've had a bunch.. usually too much/ wrong kind of bread, overcooked meat, falls apart, etc..) that came even close to being as good as a 75 cent White Castle burger.

I think this a pretty accurate description of a typical WC experience, minus any real case of the munchies! I have to second the mozz sticks though, the tomato sauce is pretty gross, but the coating is made out of some kind of addicting crispy batter I find irresistible. I live within 10 minutes of both a WC and the original White Manna in Hackensack, NJ and I must say - I'd take White Manna hands down, any day. P.S. The Jersey City location um, sucks.

Oh, those lovely memories of shuttling through after college classes in my yellow VW Beetle, first stopping at WC for me (3 cheeseburgers & onion rings) and then through KFC for the SO (2 Chicken Littles and fries). Ah - when dating was just so simple...

When in high school in the mid-70's a the night would often end with a trip to the Castle. The unfortunate one who decided to stay home would get his car "Casletlized".....we would break into the car and hide White Castles throughout..the seats, under the seats, dashboard, glove compartment..even on the antenna..you get the picture. The one burger under the sun visor got em everytime. Great fun and memories.

Some random WC thoughts:

Moving from Queens to eastern LI, I was suprised at the differences in the WC restaurants... no bulletproof glass.

For a work function, pot luck picnic, I brought a crave case. Imagine the spread on the table, fondue, quiche, finger sandwiches, caviar, and a stack of WC slyders. This was fellow colleagues and administration from work and about 85% of them have never had a WC burger before.

I had a friend of the family visiting from the West Coast and never had WC before. We convinced her that the bulletproof glass was soundproff, the "secret" burger to order was the "Kiki" burger, and you only need to order one slyder. I still laugh to this day at the expressions of the workers reacting to some lady yelling at them that she wants 1 "kiki" burger.

Good times.

I love White Castle, but even I am hesitant about going to the hole-in-wall joints that may or may not share space with other brands.

I also get them sans ketchup or pickles. The steam grilled beef, cooked onions, and soft juiced buns are what do it for me. Tempered with hot fries and unlimited carbonated drinks to balance any overwhelming factors.

Late night type snack food occasionally eaten during actual meal times. That's all I expect.

My (Sort Of) First Taste of White Castle's Burgers

Many years ago, I was standing around with a group of co-workers just before our restaurant opened. Suddenly, everyone scattered and I smelled the most atrocious scent, one that will haunt me for eternity. The world's worst fart.

Aware of my very sensitive gag reflex, a co-worker who'd eaten vast quantities of WC the night before (and had leftovers for breakfast) hatched a plan to torture me. When she gave the signal, our co-workers fled and she unleashed the mother of all farts.

I ran to a trash can in the kitchen and began dry-heaving. Eventually, I headed back to the dining room. However, as soon as I thought of the putrid odor again, I beat a path to the bathroom, passing my boss along the way. Concerned that I was vomiting into my hands, she followed me into the toilets to check on me. In response to her query, I said "M. farted and it made me puke!" She laughed so hard, tears were streaming down her face.

Ladies and gentleman, the legendary WC fart of Nicholson's Tavern and Pub in Cincinnati, OH.

I made a special trip last summer to the U.S. just to go to White Castle. I was really looking forward to it, after seeing them on TV for so long. All I could handle was one bite, and even that was tough to get down. It very much tasted like ass, and I was so disappointed. Now, this was a little drive-thru only place in Port Huron, Michigan, so maybe I need to visit a place with seats and everything, and maybe the quality is a little better than those made in a phone booth.

alright before I get banned for my incessant jalapeno cheeseburger pandering, let me explain why it's so good. It's one of the few White Castle items that has flavor and it's good. Plus I think the jalapeno kills stuff.
