DC on a budget...

I know there's been a bunch of queries on the DC area but am curious to know where the "Must Not Miss" places intersect with the "Won't Break the Bank" places? We are headed there at the end of Feb to celebrate my 30th birthday so we might also be up for one (minor) slurge meal...

HELP! Our oven is broken...

(has been since Thanksgiving, but that's a longer story) and won't be fixed until the 24th at the earliest and we have 6 guests coming in for an early Christmas celebration this weekend (12/22 & 12/23). We need suggestions for no-cook or stove-top or toaster oven friendly holiday treats and side-dishes and a fail-safe recipe for beef roast (we're up for anything) in the nesco...

What is your favorite local microbrewery?

If you're headed to WI, make sure to hit New Glarus (for Spotted Cow) and Middleton (just outside of Madison), for a Capital Amber. Huber is not far away, and at that point, you're just a short jaunt away from MIlwaukee, where there are a bunch of options--with Tyranena on the route there. Robin Shepard wrote a book on the microbreweries in Wisconsin and gives route maps and food options too. I think he has also written some for IL and MN too. Needless to say, we used to live there and miss it all terribly - especially the Spotted Cow.

Anybody remember Sprinkle Spangles? Anybody? It was a cereal made of star shapes, sprinkles and lots of sugar. Beautiful rocket fuel.

I just found some cookies that are a lot like Magic Middles at a truck stop in Italy. They're called Grisbi. Google them online.

Does anyone remember the little potato chips that came in a box? They looked like little uninflated balloons. They were really crispy, and it seems like there was a hot air balloon on the box. They were always near the Bugles. They kind of tasted like Munchos. I have been thinking about these for years.

Had to join up just to add this comment: I totally miss Fizzies, the fruity tablets that you dropped in cold water to make instant carbonated beverages. The chemists couldn't get it to work or taste quite the same after cyclamates were banned in 1969. Although is supposedly reformulated good as new in 2006. http://www.oldtimecandy.com/fizzies.htm

Sunshine Hydroxy Cookies! They were much better than Oreos for me. Well, OK ... maybe my palate has changed, and but now I will never know. I would still love to get my hands on some of those cookies. I haven't been able to find them in eons. Probably too many dreaded trans-fats. Such a bummer ...

I must admit that i remeber almost all of these foods, but honestly don't miss any of them! Charlie Chips in the can delivered to your front door was THE BEST. Thye may be available some places, but they are definitely not the same chip. they are not any good anymore. That is my reminiscence.

The elimination of MacDonald's fried apple pies can be added to the list of insane "politically correct" changes in the fast food industry over the last 20 years. Gone, is the great taste of their french fries, hamburgers, KFC's chicken, etc.
As far as soda, such as Coke and Pepsi, corporate greed has eliminated their once-great tastes because the corn syrup they now use in the product is cheaper than the pure sugar cane that was formally used.
As far as nostalgic foods, back in the 70's I used to love the little mini-pizzas that were fully encased in pizza crust that you pop into the toaster.....Delicious!! Forgot who put them out.
