In Videos: I Drink Your Shamrock Milkshake
this is cruel & unusual punishment. why oh why don't north carolina mcdonalds have shamrock shakes?
Who Really Fathered the Everything Bagel?
ahhh the everything bagel. the downfall of my low-carb diet. and i just imagine think that a whole grain whole wheat version would be as tasty! too bad (or maybe it's a good thing) there are no bagel places close to my work - or that's what i'd be having for lunch!
Gingerbread Baby Cakes: Because Winter Isn't Over
any advice to make these sans-espresso powder? just leave it out all together or replace it with ??? my signficant other hates the flavor of all things coffee...
What is your favorite local microbrewery?
If you're headed to WI, make sure to hit New Glarus (for Spotted Cow) and Middleton (just outside of Madison), for a Capital Amber. Huber is not far away, and at that point, you're just a short jaunt away from MIlwaukee, where there are a bunch of options--with Tyranena on the route there. Robin Shepard wrote a book on the microbreweries in Wisconsin and gives route maps and food options too. I think he has also written some for IL and MN too. Needless to say, we used to live there and miss it all terribly - especially the Spotted Cow.
Weekend Book Giveaway: 'Secret Ingredients, the New Yorker Book of Food and Drink'
Ruth Reichel... Love her... Can't wait for her next book....
Cook the Book: Black Bottom Cupcakes

I like frozen _____
trader joes dark chocolate covered caramels. watch out for your fillings though!
DC on a budget...
Opps - forgot to include that any great Pre-Fixe suggestions would also be very welcome!
Merry Ethiopian Christmas
one of the things i miss most about madison wi since my move to greensboro nc is my favorite ethiopian restaurant – buraka. it seems that there are no ethiopian eateries left in the nc. both of the places in chapel hill and durham closed and i can’t find mention of any others, anywhere. i am simply drooling with food lust and envy over all the options in dc. 5 hours is a bit of drive for lunch and i haven't been brave enough to try and make any of the dishes myself... yet...
Serious Sandwiches: Chick-Fil-A's Chick-n-Minis
we love us some chick-fil-a. too bad we crave them most when they are closed (sundays).... chick-fil-a and cookout (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cook_Out_%28restaurant%29&oldid=181137241) are some serious eats...
Chocolate Chip Cookie Secrets...
My favorite recipe includes Cream of Tartar makes the best, crumbliest chocolate chip cookies ever... It also involves all butter (no margarine or other shortening) and all brown sugar...
Anyone have a good mulled wine recipe?
My ex-mother-in-law made a yummy mulled wine that is one of the only traditions I have carried past that relationship... And it all relied on the Williams-Sonoma mulling spices and the recipe provided in the can... Red wine, orange juice, a touch of sugar, and the mulling spices - if memory serves - throw it all together in a crock pot and heat until warm and then reduce temp to low to hold and Happy Holidays to you!
Seriously Delicious Holiday Food Giveaway: Russ & Daughters
Popovers and a mimosa!
Best Food to cure a cold??
Knudsen's Lemon Ginger Echinacha Juice - heated up like hot apple cider. It works every time...
What do you eat with cornbread?
i love to serve chili over cornbread.... and i make my cornbread with good ol' jiffy mix, egg, buttermilk, can of corn kernels, a can of green chiles, and jack cheese. yum yum yum.
Win Your Thanksgiving Turkey!
super sandwiches - all the leftovers (save the dessert) are fair game!
Are there any foods you're ashamed to love?
torino's pizza bites.
Cheese Budget? How much money do you spend per week on cheese?
being Wisconsin-ites living in North Carolina - we'd actually spend MORE on cheese if better cheese was available... be that as it may - I'd say our weekly cheese budget runs $10 - 20 depending on what's on the menu that week...
Favorite Kind of Cake and Icing?
i'm w/ you lemons... although i must say pumpkin pound cake w/ egg nog frosting is catching my eye...
Someday, I would like to have a _____ growing in my backyard
an avocado tree. and a gigantic raspberry bush. plus a money tree.
What's your favorite salad combination?
Top a bed of arugula with blueberries, sliced granny smith apples or pears, blue cheese and some chopped pecans. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice on top and you have a great salad combo! I have another great salad combo under my recipes section on my blog: www.shar-on-nutrition.com
What's your favorite salad combination?
I slowly slowly lowly cook thin slices of garlic and sliced almonds in olive oil and butteruntil they are just barely browned, and finish the last few minutes with a good shake of seasoned salt and sugar.
They are the perfect delicious yummy crunchy topping to any mixed green salad. That, plus a sweet element, like grapes or berries or diced apple, makes a good salad great for me.
What's your favorite salad combination?
Spinach, strawberries, red onion, almonds, raisins, cheese...yummy! This is also good with pears...and a homemade poppyseed vinagrette! Excellent!
Top 10 Awesome Nostalgic Foods We Want Back
I miss the S'mores cookies and Fudgies, the little Kraft chewy candies in a gold wrapper. Does anyone remember the cereal, Double-Dip Crunch? I was like a "frosted" Crispix. Mmmmm!!! Oh, and the Quacker "strawberry" snack/dessert bars that looked like Nutri-Grain but had a little "squiggle" of white "icing" on top. I'm hungry now.
What's your favorite salad combination?
The organic farm is drowning us in huge quantities of broccoli, lettuce, boc choy, kale, spinach, Kale, collards, radicchio and escarole! I'm not complaining, but I'm trying to keep things interesting while we eat all these greens.
Current fave: any combo of lettuce, sliced strawberries, chopped red onion, walnuts, chevre and poppyseed dressing thinned with a little milk - don't like it too thick. You can throw in some white beans, too, if you like.
Also: lettuce or greens of any kind, thinly sliced pears, craisins, and a good-sized slice off a log of chevre, rolled in chopped pecans and baked until warm. Dijon mustard dressing - heaven!
My favorite chopped salad: lettuce, onions, tomato, avocado, walnuts or almonds and any type of vinegarette. Love, love, love tomatoes and avocado together.
Top 10 Awesome Nostalgic Foods We Want Back
This is hysterical - I have been trying to enlighten my fiance on the yumminess of Magic Middle cookies (apparently he was sheltered and never tried them) and he just doesn't get it. I guess if you never tried one, you wouldn't know what you were missing, but still. Also, LOVED Crystal Pepsi!!! Was it really only out for one year? That's surprising - I thought it was fairly popular in my little neck of the woods.

I miss everything on the top ten list with the exception of the C3PO's-never had those. I also miss Planters Cheeseballs and Cheesecurls, and O' Boises (those were by far my favorite potato chip growing up-especially the sour cream and onion).
But I'm super surprised that one of the most amazing foods of the 80's was left off of this list and wasn't named by anyone. I want to know what happened to Red Devil Cheese Puffs. My mom would buy them every year for New Years Eve and we were so excited to take them out of the freezer and bake them-and even if they were burnt they were still good. I really miss those and can't find them anywhere.
As far as fast food restaurants, I was very happy to find a Roy Rogers a couple of years ago (to only have it taken away from me) but all of their food from my childhood all tasted the same right down to the french fries and the pickles in the fixin bar.
Also, I don't know if any one has noticed but the good old "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame bun" (of course I'm referring to the Big Mac), the special sauce is different from when I was a kid-which I kept telling my mom about and she thought I was crazy, but I saw something on food network recently that said McD's lost the special sauce recipe in the 90's and the sauce is different now-so that being said I also miss the original big mac.

Gizmosma , totally LOVED Boppers! Would love to see those again. I also remember Fruit Wrinkles and Fruit Bars.

@wunami: Thanks for spoiling.
WTF?
Handicapping 'Top Chef' Season 5 Finale
Arrrrrrgh. How the hell did Hosea win?
Handicapping 'Top Chef' Season 5 Finale
It should be obvious to anyone who knows cooking and is watching the show that the fix is in to make Carla look good because she is "likable" and Stephan is not. They have given her a free ride to the top and the turn happened in the last couple of episodes. You only have to listen to the judges comments and reactions to Carla's food compared to how it has been for everyone else throughout the entire season. Carla has lately been getting lots over the top praise without any culinary dissection as if "its all about the love" trumps true culinary expression.

It will be Stefan or Hosea but I wish it would be Carla.

Just because you say "hootie hoo" doesn't mean you can't cookie cook.
I just simultaneously groaned and laughed out loud.
I'm rooting for underdog Hosea but think Carla's got it.

whoa whoa whoa... carla for fan favorite?? not if fabio has anything to say about that... and i really mean if he has ANYTHING to say. he's a sound byte waiting to happen.
it's basically like last year again. i think stefan and carla have an equal chance of winning it. stefan is susceptible to overconfidence and overvaluing his abilities. carla is prone to small mistakes and stress/timing related issues. both of them can cook, but i think stefan is a little more refined in his technique. i'd be pleased to see carla pull it out. i wouldn't mind stefan even though he's an ass. hosea winning would have the same effect that the possibility of lisa winning had on me last season.

@GoodEaterKenji:
Very well said, and my sentiments exactly.

it's hosea -- listen to the commercial - it says something to the effect of -- if you think you know Top Chef you're wrong -- so if everyone is putting their money on Stefan or Carla -- I'm going with Hosea

I totally remember Doo Dads. I grew up in Michigan and my father loved that snack. Since moving to Florida 15 years ago I've never seen it again.
I'm also glad to see others that remember Cinnamon Chachos. I loved those and when I explain them to people (to see if they remember them) they look at me like I'm insane.
I didn't realize that Planter's discontinued Cheez Balls. That's a bummer.
sable42, I'm happy to report that here in Florida Little Caesar's has had a huge resurgence thanks to cheap $5 take-away pizzas. Years ago Caesar's started closing up, but in the last year or so they've exploded all over my area, even opening a Drive Thru location! Now all the pizza places in the area are trying to copy them (usually with a bigger $6 pizza) but L.C. is doing business like gangbusters.
Also, if you never had GatorGum don't worry, it was terrible.

I miss Jello gelatin pops. They had a really nice consistency and never froze so hard that you couldn't bite 'em.
Top 10 Awesome Nostalgic Foods We Want Back
Does anyone remember "Aspen" soda? It was apple flavored.
Top 10 Awesome Nostalgic Foods We Want Back
Good call on Planter's Cheese Balls...also something called "Hooplas" which were ring shaped cheesy corn snacks with a vaguely nacho cheese flavor. Mmm.

I'm not sure which company made them but I love lemon cookies. There was a cookie called Lemon Coolers that I simply adored, and I have not seen them around for years. I have developed my own recipe for them powdered sugar and all, if any one is interested you can request a copy from me rlwycoff@yahoo.com.
The Mothers company has also went out of business recently, I will sorely miss Aminal Cookies and Animal Parade big bags of goodness!

Oh myyyyy how I miss Jell-O Pudding Pops! So glad I'm not the only one! I used to looove the vanilla one with chocolate chips. What I would give to have one again!! :)

What I really want to have back in the stores in the Pac. N.W. is Campbells chicken and dumpling soup. They got rid of it in the mid seventies and now when I want to order it I have to buy it via Fed Ex at a place that carries hard to find food items.
