Cook the Book: 'How to Roast a Lamb'

Mughlai Haleem: A porridge of pulses and shredded lamb and spices with fresh ginger, lemon and mint. There are other versions but Mughlai style is best... with one variation. Traditionally they shred the lamb so it's one homogenous porridge. Leaving it a bit chunky to vary the texture adds a lot.

Seriously Asian: All About Dumplings

Very neat! This must have been how the manti came about. Lots of great pan-Silk Road ideas out there.

Also 'Indian Chinese' cuisine has a similar dumpling. There used to be a very visible Indian Chinese community in Calcutta (most have since left) and smaller ethnic Chinese communities in some of the other cities. They used to Indianize their cuisine for local tastes. Indian Chinese food is still very popular.

Anyway, can't wait to try this. I've never tried my hand at dumpling making.

Faludeh Shirazi at Pars Grill House and Bar

I've never had faloodeh with akbar mashti before... it's usually an either or thing (the vermicelli with a rosewater and/or sometimes sour cherry sorbet OR the saffron ice cream, never together)... since the flavors are so delicate it seems they would clash.

But thanks for this, I'm always looking for decent akbar mashti in the city... I wish some of the ice cream parlors had it in their circulation.

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

A good chapli kebab makes a great burger... in a whole wheat bun with avocado and some coarse ground mustard and in-season tomatoes it's outstanding.

My grandmama used to make it for me.

Best ice cream in NYC?

I know it's vegan, but Lula's Sweet Apothecary (www.lulassweetapothecary.com) is really outstanding. On most flavors you don't miss the dairy and it can go toe to toe with most of the other places people have mentioned.

Really well made rice and beans is stellar... ideally with some veggies in there too.

@pickled - Dear me, murtabak is fantastic... I totally forgot about all my SE Asian favorites: roti canai, popiah, satay (indonesian styles are best).

A really good fresh lamb döner on whole wheat pide can't be beat... but it's very hard to find.

Actually one thing can beat that: corn on the cob in season grilled on a charcoal grill with lemon and chili powder and eaten in fresh air (popular vendor food in India).

Usually I go vegetarian: A spicy falafel, or aloo tikki with lots of yoghurt is awesome. Robyn's refrain on the sabich sandwich has definitely influenced me too.

Canadian Licks (around Toronto mostly) is outstanding. The best chilidog ever.

Radiance Tea House on 55th btw. 6th and 7th Aves is outstanding. A lot of variety but Chinese teas are the way to go (as is true everywhere).

Potato leek au gratin sounds delicious. I think I'll give that a try some day after our already over-stocked Thanksgiving dinner.

Those braised and glazed brussel sprouts are going on my menu, for sure. Maybe with some cauliflower thrown in, too.
