Dunkin' Donuts Waffle Breakfast Sandwich vs. McD's McGriddle
Theres this kid in my class that EVERYDAY brings in a Mcgriddle. The smell is intoxicating. I've never had a Mcgriddle...but probably will.
DD doesn't stand a chance with McD's!
Worst Food You Ate at a Party
I had this tofu cake at a camp party once...it was spongy, tasted like nothing...the blueberry sauce was the best part of the whole thing!
Anchovies: Way or No Way?
Way! They are an important ingredient in cesar dressing, pizza, and various sauces. I've also heard that they grind up anchovie bones, extract the flavor and add it to orange juice; gotta love that nutrious OJ!

Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
Theres this rinky-dink bakery close to where I live that bakes the most delicious guava, cheese pastries; plus homemade empanadas! The smell is buttery and sweet. Reminds me of where I came from.

What do you put in your oatmeal?
I love oatmeal. I would put nutela, chocolate chips with orange zest, cinnamon and brown sugar...anything really. Depends if you like it sweet or savory. Its all good though :)
Octopus: Way or No Way?
Way! Octopus is delicious. Its almost like squid...but not as chewy. The little whole ones are the best, I think. Try them out in a soup or in a tomato sauce over some pasta; you'll love it!
Chewing the Fat: Batali and Bourdain on Music
Food and music is an experience that should be enjoyed in balance. If the food is delicate and the atmosphere is light...put on Beethoven or smooth jazz. If its a bar or an eccentric restaurant, MC5 is probably going to be playing.
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
Hi I realize this is pretty late in the game to post but esmesbell mentioned the Cheerios smell in Buffalo, NY. It's from the General Mills Plant on the canal. They alternate between Cheerios and Coco Puffs.
What do you put in your oatmeal?
oh my gosh that oatmeal fest sounds AMAZING! i love oatmeal so much, and i love experimenting with it. its so versatile! my favorite thing to do is to mix in fresh pureed pumpkin or sweet potato with maple and brown sugar and raisins, and spice wise i add ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg ...
mmm
you have got to try it! :)
ps - thanks for the tips about pancakes on my post, i have managed to make fat free pancakes as well, but i would love to see your recipe for it! mine usually only turn out just okay
What do you put in your oatmeal?
Sweet: My favorite is banana cooked in with the oatmeal, then add a spoonful each of jam and peanut butter. It's PBJ oatmeal.
Savory: Top oatmeal with salsa, hot sauce, egg over-medium and season salt. Sometimes avocado too.
What do you put in your oatmeal?
I have just discovered the greatest combination for oatmeal. I add yogurt to my oatmeal. It tastes wonderful, especially with yoplait mixed berry or strawberry yougurt. Hope you try it an love it!!!!
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
The only saving grace of my family's yearly road trips to California was passing through Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world, and the worst smell I've ever experienced was Lodi, which we never passed through again. Imagine every form of animal byproduct just waiting to pervade your senses for days.
Worst Food You Ate at a Party
This may not be the worst food I ever had but it's a good story. When I was a kid, my grandmother made Thanksgiving dinner. She always has been a very tidy housekeeper. She took extra care about making sure there was never a time when she did not have plenty of mothballs in all her closets. I love her but her house always smells of that awful mothball stench. (She'll be 90 next month!) Where did she stash the extra loaves of bread she bought a few days early for the stuffing? You guessed it. The hall closet. Ah, the aroma and taste of sage, onion and mothball............
Worst Food You Ate at a Party
How about defrosted dips and cheeseball and lil smokys frozen from a previous party. Oh my god served in the plastic bowl they were frozen in. These same people serve left over breakfast stuff at brunches, ever had leftover frozen omelet , um yummy!! gotta get rid of these penny pinchen people out of the group !!!!!!! Yeh Gads! can you believe
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
I live in a little town in Yorkshire, England, and there's a health-food shop called the Bear Co-Op near me that always smells really strongly of spices and herbs. I've always loved it, since I was a little girl.
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
My husband grew up not too far from one of Ghiradelli's chocolate factories near San Francisco. When I noticed the aroma, my mother-in-law told me that if you have to have air pollution, make it chocolate.
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
mmm, every time I drive past the Nabisco factory on 208 in fair lawn, nj I always roll down the windows and take in a big whiff. mmmm, cookies
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
In 1965-66 I lived in Gilroy CA and the summer smells from the garlic processing plant and the tomato canning plant were almost overwhelming. Skip 30 years and Oakland's Chinatown fortune cookie factory would occasionally goof up and burn those sweet cookies...I liked that better than when the then closed down Nabisco plant burned theirs....that was too much even though it was obvious that it was food, not houses, burning.
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
Here in Lexington, KY we have a JIF factory and when they are roasting peanuts it's a wonderful thing... even despite the latest scare! I used to live about 3 blocks from it, and I really miss that neighborhood.
What do you put in your oatmeal?
There's so many things I love in oatmeal: almond milk, apple sauce, chocolate covered cocoa nibs, bananas, nuts, granola... :)
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
My g-ma lives in oak park, IL...a mere 1/4 mile from the ferrara pan factory. You can tell exactly when Boston Baked Beans, LemonHeads and other various candies are being made.
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
Decatur, IL - has an ADM plant that makes cornstarch and the whole town smells like corn flakes.
Its neither a good nor a bad smell.... just corny and ubiquitous.
I prefer my own local autumn "large scale" smell of roasting green chiles on nearly every parking lot surface in town. Tingly nose-burning wonderment...
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
@tina-eats - it's been over 8 years since I worked there....
What do you put in your oatmeal?
I like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove on my oatmeal. Mix in some molasses, some dried or candied ginger, and some pumpkin puree and you've got pumpkin pie oatmeal.
Oh, and it's good for using up pumpkin pie spice mix for something other than pie. That mix always used to make me sad that I bought it, since I don't bake pumpkin pies every day. (now the better question should be, why DON'T I bake a pumpkin pie every day.)
What do you put in your oatmeal?
Dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Tried apricots are awesome in it, especially if you also use nutmeg and cinnamon. Old bananas are good.
Sometimes maple syrup, sometimes brown sugar. I baked some oatmeal last week using a recipe found in SE comments awhile ago and with nutmeg, brown sugar, maple syrup, almonds and apricots it was fantastic. It reminded me of an oatmeal cookie, only better. I often pour vanilla yogurt on top of my oatmeal and it's been great on the baked oatmeal.
Oatmeal is good for cleaning out the dried fruit, nuts and seeds from the pantry.
What do you put in your oatmeal?
cinammon, brown sugar, sliced almonds and golden raisins.
Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells
B&G Foods in Portland, Maine, makes B&M Baked Beans. You can smell the sweet baking molasses aroma driving through Portland on Interstate 95. Yum!
Worst Food You Ate at a Party
I tried sea urchin at a fancy French Tourist Agency party. The French chicks were going wild for it and I am up for trying anything. It is presented in it's spiny shell, cold, I am not sure it it was raw? Well it tastes like gelatin made with ocean water. Just a mouthful of cold slimy salt. Blech. At least I can say I tried it right? Mostly I hate when you go to a party and the host makes a point of telling you there will be tons of food and you get there and its a bag a stale Lays, soooooooo lame!
What do you put in your oatmeal?
@cycorider--my bad; tweaky, tired-eyes to blame. Never read nummy food posts after grading 73 bad freshmen papers...
Chewing the Fat: Batali and Bourdain on Music
@redzerostar: We didn't take them down, but the player doesn't seem to be working for me, either. Will look into it in the a.m.
Chewing the Fat: Batali and Bourdain on Music
did you take the videos down, or is the player just not working for me?
What do you put in your oatmeal?
Maple syrup always...sometimes a bit of milk or cream. If I feel daring some cinnamon or fruit jam. Same add-ins go for cream of wheat :)
