Same-Sex Weddings Lead to Same-Sex Wedding Cakes

Here's a photo of the cake from our "same-sex wedding" 2 years ago in Canada. My partner and I decided to go with fresh flowers over the figurines...we couldn't find any that matched "us" since neither one of us wore a dress. The only figurines for two women that I've seen show at least one of them wearing a dress...oh well. We loved our cake anyway.

In the Pittsburgh area...

Quaker Steak and Lube restaurants (AWESOME wings) serve them with Ranch dipping sauce

Harp and Fiddle Irish Pub in the Strip District serves them with beer dipping sauce (these are my favorites)

What do you bring to lunch to eat at your desk?

Everyone's talking about quinoa and I still hadn't tried it, so I made some last night and brought for lunch today. It turned out really really well. It's kind of a sweet salad that's good hot, warm, cold...whatever. So works well for lunch. Just boiled some quinoa, added cinnamon to taste a tsp or so of brown sugar and a pinch of salt and then chopped up two pears drizzled with lemon juice to keep them from browning and stirred it up. It's like a dessert--so tasty.

Aztec Chocolate, 900 Years Later: Authentic?

The most "authentic" Aztec/Mayan chocolate I've had, based only on actual ability to taste the spice is Vosges Haut Chocolat Red Fire bar. It's a dark chocolate candy bar with cinnamon and ancho chipotle chillies that you can definitely notice. Leaves a little bit of a "bite" when you let the chocolate melt on your tongue. So good. If you try one DON'T pass up on their bacon candy bar--try that too, but be forewarned--they are both addicting.

Essentials: Rice

When I was in Thailand a few years ago and staying with some local friends, they also taught me the method of putting in enough water to get to the first bend in your finger. I've done it ever since and it always turns out right....in a pan or rice cooker. I don't really measure the rice. Just throw in a few handfuls and then put in enough water (with my finger lightly on top of the rice) until it reaches the first knuckle. Don't know why, but it works.

Mail order food: yay or nay?

Growing up in a German family transplanted to the US, I was lucky enough to live near a local German specialty store that provided some favorite foods. When I moved away from the area with the specialty store, I found germandeli.com to be a GREAT resource. Small online import company with excellent customer service. Everything is always shipped in a very careful way, and their products are great. German specialties you just kind find locally--great especially around the holidays.

In Florida -- the Gator's Dockside in Lake Mary, FL, just added a basked of fried kosher dills to their menu. They were about 2-inch rounds, between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick, fried quickly in a flavorful batter and still crisp inside, served with a cup of ranch dressing. We really enjoyed them, even if they sat a bit heavy afterward. But they were the highlight of the meal, and went wonderful with a pitcher of Yuengling...the dill flavor lasted quite a while on the palate.

Gator's Dockside also has EXCELLENT chicken wings, cooked dry-fried, batter-fried, or grilled, and tossed in a variety of sauces. Service is par for the course for a neighborhood sports bar.

Tony Packo's in Toledo, Ohio, offers their original pickles and peppers deep fried, with an assortment of dips (ranch, salsa, or spicy ketchup). The pickles are a spicy dill, but personally, I'd rather eat the fried pepper pieces and leave the fried pickles to my dinner companions!

My first time (with fried pickles) was at the Crazy Horse Saloon in Nashville, TN. The ones at Cheeseburger in Paradise can't match them!

Truly easy to make and totally worth heating up the fryer. I worked at Cane Creek Seafood in Hattiesburg, MS in the 90's and we went through tons of these. Simply drain dil hamburger chips, dredge in mixture of equal parts corn flour and finely ground corn meal, shake off excess, and fry until light golden brown. This produces a "frickle" that is not overly thick with breading.

In Vancouver BC [yes, yes, it's nowhere close to the east coast...]

Mr. Pickwick's Fish and Chips on Denman street does gorgeous deep fried dill spears to go with their delicious and rather posh take on F&C.

I'm having trouble believing Restaurant Eugene was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. It is an upscale restaurant...

That said, Fox Bros does serve up some mean fried pickles. I gained five pounds working where I could snack on them all the time.
