AHT Poll: What Are Your Favorite Burger Toppings?

@sticky wicket: I thought about adding cheese...but it's too late by this point. Fail. Pretend this is the poll for "What are your favorite toppings that aren't cheese or condiments?"

AHT Poll: What Are Your Favorite Burger Toppings?

@Nick: You can write that in "Other." (Or did you already do that...I see two people answered that!)

And @everyone: I didn't put in cheese or the condiments because we already voted on those and I didn't want much overlap with the other polls. But I can see why you'd write them in.

One person wrote in "ham." Heh. I can't knock it til I've tried it.

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

@PommeDG: Yeah, she was....I talked to her on the phone yesterday afternoon before I wrote this post. (Can't say I have a recording of the conversation, but my coworkers overheard me.) After she told me how much she liked crust and how not into filling she was, I said something like, "Uh mom, people usually like to eat both together," and she she responded with surprise. Not that she doesn't understand that people tend to eat both together, just that her tolerance for sweetness must be so low that she's surprised most people enjoy the fillings, or something like that.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

Love, love, LOVE a good crust. Minutes ago I was in the middle of rolling out raw pie dough for chicken pot pie, actually, and had to make an additional 1/4 batch to replace what I'd been nibbling.

Lucky's Famous Burgers in Chelsea

@Big B: Glad to hear another opinion! I usually don't even get fries at Shake Shack cos I'm not hungry enough, but for the purposes for this review I got the major burger components (well, for me at least: burger, fries, shake). Lucky's fries did taste better. I love shakes, but I had it when they're unreasonable large. :( Then I feel poopy for wasting so much food.

AHT Poll: What's Your Favorite Side Dish to Go with a Burger?

@tempspaz: Ah..I mentioned McD because I was thinking of its size (compared to steak and shoestring) not necessarily processed fast-food, but I didn't clarify it. I think I'll just leave it instead of add another answer though since it's already in the lead..or add "McD-skinny."

Reality Check: Wendy's Bacon Deluxe

@redfish: Not liking Wendy's doesn't mean I don't like fast food period; it means I'm not a big fan of fast food burgers. Which is true (but I was curious to see how this compared to McD and BK). If I go to a major fast food place I'm more likely to go with a chicken or fish sandwich. But those don't fit with this website...doh!

I've had ham on a burger once before. Ham and bacon on top of the patty. It's not bad at all. Adds a good saltiness, but you need to expect it, or I can see it being very off-putting.

100 Rules for Restaurant Staffers

I was a server a few years ago and I don't think anyone should be bothered by the "do you need change" question, but that being said, there are people out there who do take offense to it.

Another server told me about a good solution that worked for her:

Pick up the check and announce "I'll be right back with your change..." giving the patron the chance to say "Thank You" or "Go ahead and keep it."

From Serious Eats: New York

100 Rules for Restaurant Staffers

I disagree with the author about pulling the plate. When I am eating out I hate it when the server doesn't take the empty plates. I don't want to sit around with an empty plate in front of me. I'd like to be able to put my hands/elbows on the table.

When I became a waiter, I was told that older people generally prefer to keep all plates on the table until everyone is done, while younger people prefer to have the plates pulled as they finish.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I have ignored fillings before, yes. It is better when you can eat the filling and the crust together but the crust is almost never problematic.

From Talk

Finding Kvass & Eastern Euro foods in NJ/NY area

I'm always on the look out for Bulgarian products and Astoria, Queens is a gold mine. There are tons of stores there that focus on Eastern Europe, including Greece, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Russia. I usually manage to stumble upon the smaller ones with the giant buckets of feta, but Titan Foods (http://www.titanfood.com) is a great Greek supermarket and a one-stop shopping destination for me. There are a couple places in NJ you can go to and www.findbgfood.com is a helpful directory. Good luck!

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I think whoever said "maybe crust haters are used to store bought crusts and never had a scratch crust" might be onto something. Well-made scratch crust...OMG, nothing like it. And you KNOW that someone making a scratch crust would not waste such a labor of love on acky Sandra Lee canned filling.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I agree that a higher crust-to-fruit ratio is preferable with fruit pies. The filling is often too sweet and I like a good thick crust to balance it.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I loooooooove pie crust unplugged, especially hot, with a glass of ice cold (whole) milk. I usually make a two crust recipe even if I just need one for a pie so I can have a special treat.

Shake Shack Coming to Miami Next Year

Well although I wouldn't be counted as a reliable source here a friend of mine who is close to Alshaya family confirmed to me they were coming to Kuwait. He was actually upset because he had tried bringing them to Kuwait before and they said they weren't interested.

Alshaya have brought other US only brands to Kuwait like P. F. Chang, Pinkberry, Office Depot, Pottery Barn etc.. so its not hard to believe. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

We also have Napket but thats a British only brand.

From A Hamburger Today

Shake Shack Coming to Miami Next Year

I have not had the pleasure of eating at the NYC location, however I live in SO FL and have friends who live a block from Lincoln Road, so darn straight I will be going there as soon as they have had a few weeks to 'shake' out the bugs--sorry, it is late on a Friday at work and my Charm City burger fix in Deerfield Beach is only a couple of hours away.

I obviously won't be able to do a compare, but after living here for over 30 years I have noticed that one or two people from NYC seem to get down here every now and then, so we will probably be advised as to their ability to transfer the goods, so to speak. All I need is some advice from the experienced as to what to order and how, and I will be there! I can hardly wait.

Cheers!

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

When you told her, your mother was suprised that people like to eat filling and crust together?!? :-| Shouldn't an artifice at least serve a purpose and be a little less obviously contrived?

From Serious Eats: New York

100 Rules for Restaurant Staffers

I worked as a bartender in NYC restaurants and hotels from 1978 to 1993, and I agree with every last one of Buschel's commandments. I don't think they're inconsistent in the least. The inclusion of the "only" in the line about the two final lobsters, for example, is what makes that a hustle rather than a piece of information.

And just because the Served blogger claims it's OK to ask what was wrong when the tip is bad doesn't mean it's right. It's far better if the manager goes over and asks if there was a problem than if the server does.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I heart pie crust. I usually eat the fruit filling first leaving the pie crust to enjoy last. When I have leftover pie dough scraps, I end up putting dabs of Nutella in and making mini turnovers.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

Oh I have been doing this for years! I used to joke that I performed "stealth surgery" on pies because I could hit the dessert table at family Christmases or Thanksgivings and remove 2 slices worth of crust, leaving behind most of the filling, and no one realized what I was doing:)
If fillings are made with good, fresh fruit and not loaded w/ sugar, I'll eat them. But all too often, I'd take a bite and realize the apple or cherry filling was canned. Not wasting calories on that, thanks!

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I also love pie crust and save it for last. On the rare occasion that my mom made pies from scratch, she'd roll out the scraps and do the sugar/cinnamon thing as a few people above described. I liked that better than the pie.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

My mom is completely the opposite. She'll eat the filling and maybe half of the top crust, and leave the rest for the dog!

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

When we were young, my grandmother always dusted the pie crust with cinnamon sugar and baked them. Those toasty, crispy, lightly sweet bites were always my favorite part of the pie making process.

From Serious Eats

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I love pie crust. I always save the crust for last.
