Confessions of a check-out lane lookey-loo...

I'd rather someone peek at my groceries than "peek at my groceries" if you know what I mean!

The most unusual purchases I've ever seen: A 30 something guy at the checkout at 11:00 pm buying motor oil, 2 folding lawn chairs, Reddi-Whip, and a box of condoms--the glow in the dark variety.

I try to shop earlier in the day now.

THIS will never touch my lips again!!!

dbcurrie--you were raised right honey! I've eaten all manner of things I would NEVER have chosen--all in the name of being polite. It's a wonder my manners have resulted in death due to ptomaine poisoning!

There aren't many things I don't like but you will never find the following in my kitchen:

Velveeta (or any processed cheese "food")--I'm southern, but just can't eat cheese that doesn't have to be refrigerated.
Miracle Whip (eeek! It's SWEET!)
Sauerkraut (too many school lunches of kraut and weenies)
Potted Meat or Vienna Sausages (again, bad childhood experiences)
Cilantro (I'm one of those genetically disposed to want to hurl when I smell or taste it.)
Liver--Just can't. I know what it does in the body.
I think that's pretty much it.

Do you have one favorite go-to, all comprehensive cookbook?

PerkyMac--sorry it took so long to respond! The Nancy Drew Cookbook was published in 1975. I received it for my 12th birthday that same year. I actually really like the way they used the book titles for recipe titles. Cheesy, yes, but I still get a kick out of.

You can still get her cookbook--I've seen it at used book stores and on ebay.'

I ditto what everyone has said about Cook's Illustrated. Those folks rock.

My first cookbook was the Nancy Drew Cookbook--I loved Nancy! I made every single recipe in the book. Great recipe titles--"Ringmaster Secret Chicken" and "Hidden Window Dessert" were favorites. I used my mom's BHG cookbook (the red checkerboard one) until I got married and then I started collecting community cookbooks. The Telephone Pioneer's Cookbook is a classic. If a recipe isn't in that cookbook, you don't need to eat it.

After I started catering I relied upon Martha Stewart, Nathalie Dupree, Julia Child, and Ina Garten. I love my CIA cookbook, anything from Cooks Illustrated, Madeline Kamman, and Marcella Hazan.

Last week I made "Case of the Smothered Pork Chops" for old time's sake. The classics. . . they never go out of style!

THIS will never touch my lips again!!!

I've heard a lot about offal lately, especially in the U.K., where I will be going soon. I don't want to eat it!
I will not eat:
green beans
American cheese
white bread (tho because of my husband, I end up eating it anyway!)
Skippy PB
Burger King or Jack in the Box
I distrust Safeway meat. The ground beef is so fakely bright red, and it's an ugly gray-brown in the middle, as though it has expired three days previously.
I agree with the stuff that's weird colors. I've seen blue and purple applesauce. Looks gross!
Tootsie rolls, lollipops, Skittles and other candy other than chocolate! (I do like Jelly Bellys though!)
I have a hard time with curry. It's a big thing in the Bay Area, and all my co-workers eat it. But I'm not into the strong flavors.

For me...

THIS = standard hot dogs

...eeeeww! Though if they're specialty or gourmet I'll evaluate the product; it's a thin line anyways

@chisai........LOL. I used to be a liver hater too, but I really enjoy it now - once or twice a year. I also LOVE pate'. However, I would never serve it to guests unless I knew for certain that they shared my fondness. Can you even imagine the look of horror on faces? Might be a fun joke, but the odor lingers and that would spoil the joke, regardless of what I really planned for dinner.

My mother was iron deficient and cooked it once a year the whole time I was growing up. We'd walk in the door and the "fragrance" would knock you over. Mom let us smother it with applesauce to disguise the taste. Funny thing is, now I like liver, but I'm not too crazy about applesauce, except with pork.

Diet Coke
Durian
Kidneys (as in the organ, not the beans)
Star Apples, aka Caimito Oh god just seeing that photo makes me gag.

I live in Asia, so just wondering if anyone has a recommendation that covers more Eastern cooking basics?
