Hunting the Slipper Lobster at Sea Breeze Fish Market in Bensonhurst

Since I love both shrimp and lobster, and get a vengeful delight in eating seafood "bugs" (having an aversion to insects), the slipper sounds like my perfect food. And what's more perfect than garlic and parsley? Can't wait to try!

What better than a spicy hot dip on a cold winter day, even if I can't pronounce it....Feta in all forms is a gift from the Greek gods. Thanks for a new way to enjoy it. Love your pictures!

Getting Over My Fear of Little Italy at Alleva Dairy

I do find Little Italy too crowded and inauthentic these days, but would venture there (or anywhere) for some good mozzarella. And stuffed shells are an underappreciated pasta dish - thanks for reminding us of their sublime nature.

Stuffing Peppadews from Sahadi's Importing Company

Sahadi's olives are superb and cheap. Sahadi's dried fruits and nuts are superb and cheap. Sahadi's coffees are superb and cheap. Sahadi's hummus, tabbouleh, babaganoush and other prepared foods are superb and cheap. Need I say more. Usually I eat the peppadews solo, but the recipes are enticing and will definitely try.

Makes me pine for the fjords! I love that almost every nationality has crepes, and having grown up on palacsinta (hungarian crepes), i respect every nation's version - sweet or savory. Also wish Wee Kee's was still around. What a concept - fascinating!

Since Little Italy has become such a tourist trap, it's refreshing to hear of hidden Italian treasures with authentic and delicious ingredients to help fuel my Italian food addiction! Mozza in any form should be a staple in everyone's kitchen.

There is really a lot to try in this store. The problem is I live far so I can't go that often. There are online websites that have some of their products such as www.gourmetnut.com but its not the same as going there.

@redszerostar: Oooh, they are cute. Now I feel bad; not bad enough not to cook them again, though!

@mrjosh: Chopped off how? It ended with the recipe, no? It was very good indeed: nice and garlicky, and the slippers were tender and tasted just as I was told, shrimpy and lobstery.

The Chinese-Norwegian restaurant was originally Fredheim's (or maybe no "i" - Fredhjem? as in home? - not quite sure)- going back to the 1930's at least. My Mom waitressed there and met my Dad there - a Swede. I ate there a number of times growing up in the 50's & 60's and went back in the 80's with my elderly Mom when it was both - the previous Norwegian proprieter taught the Chinese cooks how to do panakakke, kompa, all the rest - and they did it superbly. Sorry to hear it is gone.

Baklava is my favorite. And theirs looks great. Will definitely check it out next time I'm in the city.

It's WHERE?!?!?!?! Heavens when I visit I must check it out. I love baklava too. A meet and greet cat - heaven indeed.

I'm with tdiddy too - that cat obviously samples the merchandise far too often. Thanks for a spotlight on another of NYC's gems.

@Barbara -

No worries. My apologies for being so jumpy. I can't seem to shake my overprotection of my beloved Jersey Shore!

All that said. you may appreciate my review of Max's - one of my favorite eating establishments ever...

I always get my mozzarella from Di Palo's. However, now that you bring Alleva to my attention, I really what to ask: who has better mozzarella? Di Palo's or Alleva?

Ubereater, I was joshing. From where I sit, I can see six pictures of the Shore, not including my desktop. I have been going down for a couple weeks for years, and am counting the days until I hit the Donut Hole in Normandy Beach again. Glad you approved of the rest!

I love peppadews. Nice recipe to make my own. I can almost smell and feel the store from your writing - thanks!!

From Serious Eats: New York

Some items I get every time:

Kalamata olives, black and green

Bulgarian feta (impossibly rich and barely crumbles)

B.R. Cohn olive oil (insanely good and not as expensive here as elsewhere - non-organic is better than organic - too good to use for anything but bread dipping)

onion ficelles

halava

pistachios (they always offer a discount on 3 pound bags, and they correctly say that the American ones are better than the Turkish)

Go to Casa Mozzarella on 187th & Arthur for the best, softest & tasty mozzarella in NYC. You can also get the best pasta (see Wine Spectator) at Borgatti's on 187th. They will give you cooking recommendations and tips on what shape you need, etc. Teitel Brothers sells mor Parma Prochute than any place in the Metro area at $12.95 a pound & the same for the Parma Reggiano - no body does it cheaper or fresher. Addios bread is as good as you want from the Italian basics.
