A Mini San Francisco Pizza Jaunt: Does Alan Richman Know His Bay Area Pizza?
I ordered a large cup with scoops of salted caramel, roasted banana, malted vanilla, and some hot fudge.
You threw it out?
You threw it out??!!
Cook the Book: Borscht
I made this over the weekend and it was good. My only complaint was that the grated potato cooked more quickly than the other vegs and became mushy. I would chop them next time for some textural interest - rather than a bunch of grated shreds. But overall good and my baby loved it!
Market Scene: Chicago in May
Why is Nichols Farm at every single farmer's market in Chicagoland, with more produce than any other stand, and have it earlier than anyone else? Could it really all be from a local farm? I'm suspicious. Someone should do an expose.
Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 68: Coming Up on the Big 5-0
Impressive! I really love this series. You've been brave about posting all your triumphs and mistakes. And, all i can say (as a thin person who eats candy and junk food almost every day): portions, portions, portions.

Most awesome thing I've seen in a while. Can't wait to go home and show my 18-month-old!
Chicago's Salami for the Soul
Good stuff! I'm going there this evening actually. I love the liverwurst.
Buying Vanilla Beans
I bought mine at Costco, in a two-pack test tube, and each tube had maybe 5 beans? I don't remember what I paid, but they are still so soft. I'm amazed (and a little suspicious). The ones I bought from Spice House got hard and dried out quickly.
Good (healthy and/or vegetarian) eats in Chicago
Another vote for Amitabul, and I LOVE Chicago Diner. Great sandwiches and desserts, great atmosphere. Blind Faith Cafe in Evanston is another gem. My family has been going there since the 70s.
KarynMC, can you eat at Chicago Soy Dairy? Can you buy their food directly from the factory? Where is it?
I know I should give up _____ (food/drink item), but....
coffee - for good baby production. oh, it's hard. i just fail over and over every day.

Um I totally believed that until the end.
And what about delivering music manuscripts for the Muppet Show? Was that a lie too?!
Hydrox vs. Oreo vs. Newman O's vs. Joe Joe's
No - the best are Back to Nature in the purple box. Try those!

How in the world did that little kid remember all that?
Eating for Two: 'Laborade'
Hi Robin - I enjoy your posts. I had my first, a girl, 6 mo. ago. I was also worried about getting hungry during labor but it was the last thing on my mind. I was thirsty and drank water and juice over ice chips and that was nice.
I threw up - I think some women do, during the transition stage, and it's not related to what or whether you eat.
What's scary about your first labor and delivery is being out of control and not knowing what is going to happen - the anticipation of it. So if making a drink to take with you to the hospital and drinking it in early labor will make you feel like you're doing "something" for your own comfort, do it! What's the baking soda for? And the calcium tablets?
I saw the Business of Being Born last week. It's beautiful. It's not gross at all (and I am grossed out easily). I highly recommend it.
The Making of Saul Bolton’s Baked Alaska, at Saul in Boerum Hill
My late aunt, and now my cousin, were/are experts at Baked Alaska, a dessert we look forward to at every Thanksgiving meal. She makes hers in a huge flat baking dish, with about 3 different flavors of ice cream--and Brigham's hot fudge sauce on the side. It's one of the great treats of my year.

Hannah, I've come late to SE and your writing, but have enjoyed it. I'll miss it, and I hope you will take up your blogging gift again soon. Looking forward to learning what group you're with. If they operate in the MidWest we will give any Chicago operations a try.
Lived in Santa Barbara for six years - some time ago - and SoCal is an entirely different world. Hope you like it. It may be a little harder to live there since the state iwent broke.

Good Luck Hannah, so glad to hear you found a job! I have really enjoyed your blog, hope to see you writing again soon!

How bittersweet but welcome to LA & congrats on landing the gig! Will be seeing a "Managed" here on SE soon?
Anyhow, hopefully we'll have a chance to meet (and eat, and drink) when you're here!

looks beautiful -- but using boxed cookies for the crust? there wasn't anything homemade laying around the kitchen he could have used?

Congratulations Hannah. I hope you will maintain some kind of blog when you're in LA! I really enjoyed this column.

Fun!
I've always been intrigued by the Baked Alaska ever since seeing a recipe for one as a little girl in my mom's Betty Crocker cookbook with the red and white picnic table cloth-esque cover. Someday I will have to try and make one!

Well done, Hannah. Good to hear that you're moving in the direction that you'd like to go. I've read your blog for about a year now, through Serious Eats, and it's always been one of the features I look forward to.
Also, six months ago, one of my very good friends moved to LA to do a restaurant management program that sounds suspiciously similar to the one you've described. She's loving it and all the opportunities that come with it. Maybe I'll tell her to look out for you...
Good luck with everything!

as an angeleno, curiosity has gotten the better of me... what restaurant will you be working with? if you can't tell me, i'd love a clue!

Good luck ^_^ Maybe you can start a new series as learning-the-ropes-of-restaurant-management.

I'm not kidding, I've been reading your column for a while now and I so look forward to every Tuesday when I know it'll show up on my google reader page. I hope you have an amazing adventure but you will be so missed. I have one of your articles in an email draft so that I can read it all the time. It was my favorite one called Sunday Night Mayhem. I can't tell you what this column has meant to me.
Thank you so much.

Congratulations, Hannah. I'm jealous. :) You grab life with gusto and embrace it with all you have ... and it will reward you. Best of luck, and please keep writing. You have a talent for it.

Congrats on the job =) I, too, just moved from the east coast to SoCal and it warms my heart everytime I hear someone else making the same move. You're going to love it here. There's so much to do and it instantly feels like home!!

I was always happy on Tuesday mornings, knowing that I could have my first cup of coffee and read "Served." I'll miss the ritual, thank you for the pleasure, and congratulate you on finishing school. I lived in New York and then in Los Angeles when I was your age. An irreplaceable, joyous experience. All my best wishes.

will really miss your column here on SE -- was always a bright spot on the page.... well, this is the way of life .... one door closes, another opens.

best wishes, pooch!

Congrats Hannah! (you actually probs don't know me haha)
I'm assuming it's the restaurant group that has a restaurant on 27th (23rd?) and Park in NYC and somewhere else with a smattering of them in SoCal (including a seafood place, a comfort food place, and the traditional one with the most amazing slow roasted pork ribs). I interviewed for that position as well (still think about it) but you're much better suited for it :) Best of luck!! I hear the program's amazing and I'm totally jeals!!

I'm sure you're gonna love it, too bad we won't have Served anymore, I really enjoyed your stories and your writing...maybe in the future you'll write another blog about your new life.
We'll miss you!

Congrats on the job!!! I have enjoyed your column tremendously and hope you are able to continue writing---perhaps a new venture called Managed. As a native Californian, welcome to the left coast....LA is a true adventure, and be sure to get to San Francisco.
