What's Not OK To Eat For Breakfast?

i just had salad for breakfast at a buffet in vegas this weekend! I don't usually feel like having salad in the AM, but I felt like my diet was lacking greens. Plus, it's fairly common to see salad at breakfast in Japan so i think it's ok.

for me, everything is fair game for breakfast - leftovers are the best!!

Any idea how many candy bars equals 1.5 cups?

Los Angeles: 10 Icy Sweet Treats We Love

Costco Carne Asada Bake?!

i had a bulgogi bake at costco in japan!

What's the Weirdest Sandwich You Make?

i like to put chips in all my sandwiches, but every day for about 3 years when I was in jr high/high school i ate cream cheese and potato chips on an onion bagel.

i also found a recipe on epicurious for a grilled cheese with tomato, basil and MISO that was surprisingly good.

The United States of Pizza: Where to Eat Pizza in California (Part 2, Southern California L.A.)

As an OC girl, I have to agree that we're under represented. My pick is Tony's Little Italy in Fullerton for deep dish. So good! http://www.tonyslittleitaly.com/

Yoplait Greek: Not Fage, But Not Bad At All

Dannon has a new greek yogurt out too. But maybe it's the same as Oikos since they have the same parent company?

Seriously Asian: Frozen Tofu

That's interesting. I recently had a couple blocks of silken tofu that got pushed too far back in the fridge and froze. When they defrosted, I was creeped out by weird stringy texture, I threw them right away. Now I wish I had eaten them because I kind of want to try this... lol

Kombucha: The Acquired Taste for Funky-Tasting Fermented Tea

I bought this at whole foods too and thought it was nasty. But I forced myself to drink the whole bottle and my light-weight asian self actually got slightly flushed from the trace alcohol! how embarassing

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 92: What Happened to Caffeine-Free Diet Coke?

i was just in Japan and it appears that they don't even have Diet Coke anymore (used to be called Coke Lite there). They only have Coke Zero now, which was okay by me since I love that stuff.

What Was Your Favorite School Cafeteria Food?

I couldn't wait for chicken a la king day in elementary school! It was my absolute favorite...I really should look up a recipe for it.

In jr high, it was all about the microwaveable chimichangas. Seriously, it even came in the plastic wrap.

My faves in high school were tator tots and pretzels with cheese. Yum.

Things improved substantially at the UCLA dining halls, where sushi was offered several time a week and we even had chicken and waffles. Hello Freshman 15 :)

Do You Have a Favorite Greek Yogurt?

I vote for TJs and Chobani. I also thought that Oikos was kinda runny. And definitely plain over any flavored ones.

Do You Eat or Email First?

i work at home and get up just a few minutes before i'm supposed to be "at" work - 8 AM. So my routine is - wash face, turn on computer while brushing teeth, then check email to see if there is anything urgent before taking time to make and eat breakfast.

What Weird Family Foods Did You Grow Up Thinking Were Normal?

hot rice with a raw egg and soy sauce

fresh strawberries that you smashed with the back of your spoon in a bowl and ate with milk and sugar

steamed broccoli with mayo and soy sauce

and finally, my own invention - bagel sandwiches with cream cheese and potato chips

California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area

I had never heard of Dutch Crunch bread until I moved to the Bay Area from LA a year ago. I had my first taste of it at Genova Deli in Walnut Creek. The name and the look of the bread lead me to think it was going to be better than it really was. I mean, it was good, but I guess I was expecting crunchier.

Now I feel inspired to try out some more places!

What’s Your Favorite Weird Snack Combo?

an onion bagel made into a sandwich with cream cheese and potato chips in the middle. i ate this every day for about 3 years in jr high/high school!

also cheetos and orange juice. mmmm

Sugar on Snow: Maple Syrup on Snow Snack in Vermont

Served: Customer Servicing

i'm guessing it was one of the Chinatown buses. I took one to Baltimore as well a few years ago. The ride down was fine, if a bit harried and confusing because no one spoke english and Chinese ladies were trying to sell and push you onto one of the many buses along the street. However, on the way back, the bus never came to pick us up in Baltimore! Turns out, the bus already filled up in DC, so they just didn't even bother to stop in Baltimore despite the fact that we had tickets. Thank goodness I was able to stay with my friend an extra night.

I haven't taken the Chinatown bus since then and I'd like to say I would never do it again, but $35 is really cheap...

Mixed Review: Lipton's Onion Dip and Simply Organic's Guacamole for Football Parties

i have to agree with your "viscous" assessment on the onion dip. I used to think it was good until my mom started making onion dip from scratch using a Good Eats recipe. Trust me this recipe is amazing. One time when I asked for dip she tried to trick me and gave me the powder stuff and I was like "WTF is this?!" at first bite.

Holiday Basket Advice...

Thanks for the great ideas! I love to bake, but I guess I hadn't really thought about making my own basket because I figured shipping would be a hassle. It looks like it would be worth a shot though. I'd better get a move on!

Holiday Basket Advice...

I want to get my bf's family a xmas present and I was thinking about sending them some sort of food basket. It's hard for me to bring them individual gifts because I live out of state and when I tried this last year, the airline lost my luggage (thank god only for a few days!).

I sent them a Mrs. Beasley's basket a few years ago, but does anyone have any suggestions for something more creative? Maybe something from the midwest or their home state of Nebraska? (they don't live there anymore). Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Robb Walsh's Southern-Style Chicken-Fried Steak

While researching Texas Eats Robb Walsh set out on a journey of Chicken-Fried Steak discovery. He ate his way around rural Texas, seeking out the best versions of this big Texan standard. Some where memorable, and some not so much, but if you've ever experienced the weighty dish known as the CFS, you've got to hand it to Walsh, his search for the best steak was a stomach stretching exercise to say the least. Chocolate Oatmeal Pie

This recipe is my attempt to re-create the original version of this pie from the Brooklyn pie shop, Four and Twenty Blackbirds. It comes pretty darn close to replicating the original, which features a flaky all-butter crust, a layer of rich ganache, and a layer of gooey oatmeal that gets all caramelized and crisp on top. More

Cornish Pasty

Cornwall's contribution to the world of meat pastries is a simple hand pie filled with meat and root vegetables. Although the Cornish Pasty Association has strict rules regarding what exactly can go in an official Cornish pasty (beef, turnip, potato and onion), on this side of the pond it's safe to add a few extra ingredients other than the essentials. Traditionally, this pie is meant to eat standing on a lunch break, but add a pot of tea or some strong ale and light green salad and these humble pasties can be the cornerstone of an excellent brunch. Bread Baking: Soft, Cheesy 'Focaccia'

Softer and fluffier than focaccia or pizza, think of this as a flat loaf of very flavorful bread topped with gooey cheese. If you want it a little crisper, just bake it longer. And here's a bonus: you can make it well ahead of time, then reheat it in the oven so you've got warm bread with melty cheese whenever you need to serve it. More

Lychee Bellini

I think it's best to use a dry sparkling wine to pair with the fruit, or the cocktail ends up cloyingly sweet and tasting like a bad hangover waiting to happen. I used a dry sparkling brut rosé from Alsace, France (Lucien Albrecht Cremant d'Alsace, made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes), which imparts a lovely pinkish hue. A dry Prosecco would be excellent as well. More

The Food Lab: How to Make Scallion Pancakes

When I first learned how scallion pancakes are made, I was floored. Whoah, ancient Chinese secret! was what ran through my head. It took me several years to realize that conceptually, the method is almost identical to that of making puff pastry, croissants, or any number of laminated pastries, which makes scallion pancakes a perfect subject for exploring in this week's Food Lab. Zero Proof: Rosewater and Lychee Mocktail

In small amounts, rosewater lends a subtle floral note to beverages. Rose goes particularly well with fruit, which is why we've paired it with lychee in this alcohol-free tipple. The lychee syrup is sweet, the lemon tart, and the rosewater fragrant, making for a drink that's both exotic and strangely familiar. More

Cook the Book: Whole Wheat Spaghetti with Roast Chicken, Shredded Brussels Sprouts, and Parmesan

Another ingenious leftover chicken recipe from Mindy Fox's A Bird in the Oven and Then Some, this Whole Wheat Spaghetti with Roast Chicken, Shredded Brussels Sprouts, and Parmesan is a perfect farewell to brussels sprouts season. Thinly shredded and sautéed with a butter and olive oil, the brussels sprouts are mixed with shredded chicken, golden fried slices of garlic, and loads of grated Parmesan. More

Bread Baking: Savory Monkey Bread

It's a funny name, and it's a fun loaf of bread. I don't know what it is about pull-apart loaves, but they invite nibbling. People who would normally eat one slice of bread often find themselves unable to resist pulling off just one more little bit. And then one more. And then this little piece is dangling ... this bread simply doesn't last long. When most people think of monkey bread, they think of the cinnamon-sugar version, but there's no reason why you can't make an herby, savory version that's perfect for lunch, brunch, or dinner. More

Eat for Eight Bucks: Texas Turkey Hash

The original is made with ground beef and white rice; I used turkey and millet and was very happy with the results. The cilantro, also my addition, is nice but not necessary; add it only if you have it around. I make my own chili powder; you may use any store-bought or homemade powder you like (just watch the salt if it's store-bought) or make up your own spice blend of cumin, oregano, and a dot of cayenne.
