Worst foodie gift ever?

A well-meaning friend of mine brought a bag of "gifts" for me when she asked me to be in her wedding. Among the heap of stuff in the bag was a jar of jalapeno pepper meat marinade with partially hydrogenated oil and garlic powder in the first five ingredients. I eventually dumped out the contents of the jar into the sink, knowing I wouldn't ever use it for flavoring and its smell was putrid, like something that could corrode metal. The smell hung around the house and it was heinous!

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

This year is my first vegan Thanksgiving and my aunt, whose house I'm going to for the meal, is sort of put-off by it, I can tell. But, her sides are always amazing and delicious, and I am going to bring some mushroom gravy and maybe some Field Roast for my main dish. She makes an incredible apple pie - made with vegetable shortening and Earth Balance margarine - that is the best I have ever tasted, and I'm not a pie person so that's a saying something.

What strange things are in the door of your fridge?

Great topic!

@Twistie - I too have tonkatsu sauce, aloe vera gel and ponzu sauce in my fridge door! Are we fridge twins?

In addition I have:

-flax oil
-yuzu citrus dressing
-mirin
-hon tsuyu (a soup and sauce base)
-red curry paste
-anko (Japanese red bean paste)
-Patagonian dulce de leche (from a friend who visited Argentina)
-wasabi

The 10 Worst Food Trends? Really?

I completely agree with number 9 and 4 - Molecular Gastronomy and Foam! I went to wd-50 for a friend's birthday celebration about a year ago and it was a truly horrifying experience. I ordered the foie gras "gravel" (essentially foie gras that was freeze dried and then shattered with a hammer) and a fish dish and shared a dessert with the table. All of the dishes were too tiny for a proper meal and all covered in or accompanied with foam, I went home with a horrible stomach ache. My boyfriend and I both rolled on the bed feeling the pain of eating dishes of science experiments. I wanted to like wd-50 but I am sorry to say I can't and I won't.

Cocktails and Spirits with Paul Clarke: Women and Whiskey

I'm a 30 year old New York transplant who was raised in Kentucky and I adore bourbon, and have been drinking it and cooking with it (banana's foster is amazing with bourbon) since I was younger than anyone should know. Although I rarely drink, when I do, I help myself to some bourbon.

It has been the drink of choice in my family for generations - my grandfather would liberally pour it on my ice cream as a kid, as he and my grandmother enjoyed their evening bourbon cocktails. His grandfather could only be convinced to get his limb amputated with the assistance of bourbon.

When it comes to bourbon, there isn't a house in Kentucky that doesn't have at least one bottle in its bar. The "table" bourbon of choice of any Kentuckian is Maker's Mark. I was taught from a young age to mix with Marker's and keep the good stuff like Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek for drinks on the rocks or a dash of water.

Every place I have lived, be it continental Europe, the American midwest to the UK, I have always brought at least one bottle of my dark caramel friend (even had backup bottles sent via mail) to share with friends and convert them. I extol the wonders of it and after one drink, I can quiet down and let it speak for itself.
