Room temp butter - what type of storage?

I have one of those upside-down butter keepers - a small bowl in which you put the butter and invert it into a cup filled partially with water. Keeps the butter soft, but the water limits the exposure to air. You have to change the water every 2-3 days, but that's a small task.

New York's First Steak 'n Shake Opens Tomorrow

For the past 10 years I've lived in St. Louis, where Steak 'n Shake is practically on every corner. But I've never been to one. I prefer to make my own, thank you. However, someone gave me an S 'n S gift card for Christmas, so I'll guess I'll finally break down and try them.

Favorite restaurant supply store purchases?

Edward Don in Chicago used to have an outlet store on Elston Ave. (Don't live there anymore so it might be gone). I used to pick up restaurant dishes there. I still have a good set of sturdy water glasses that I paid $.50 apiece for.

Willie G's in Pueblo, CO. Not sure if it's still open. I was last there almost 10 years ago.

What kitchen gifts are you making for others?

I made five batches of Chocolate "Crack" (search SE for recipe) for most of my friends (I kept the small pieces for QC). Also made spiced almonds for a couple of friends who don't like chocolate. I know, go figure!

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Recchiuti Chocolate Bars

I migrate from one to another. At the moment it's Trader Joe's dark chocolate-covered almonds. But of course I'll eat almost anything covered in chocolate, including chocolate!

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Filet Mignon Roast from Pat LaFrieda Meats

My favorite would have to be a standing rib roast, followed by sirloin. But, heck, I'll take the filet if I win!

Weekend Cook and Tell: Thanksgiving Post-Game Roundup

The only thing better than our T-day meal was the leftovers. Turkey soup. Turkey sandwiches (tomato, mayo, and lettuce) and my favorite - Friday morning poached eggs over stuffing. Yum, yum and yum!

Candy a Day: Whoppers

Whoppers fan? You betcha! Thanks for all the references to other brands. I'll have to give them a try. Christmas is just around the corner, so.....

That's the Spirit: Johnnie Walker Double Black

JW Black is my "luxury" scotch of choice when I want something special but don't have the bucks to burn on something like Talisker or Lagavulin. No mention was made of price, but I'll still be heading to my favorite liquor store soon to see if they have the Double Black in stock yet. I'm intrigued, to say the least.

Cook the Book: Kolaches

These were a Sunday morning staple when I was growing up in Berwyn, IL. Quite a number of bakeries in the near western suburbs featured these little delights. Don't know if they still do. I'm sure the demographics have changed by now.
