Poll: Do You Share Straws?

I have always lived my life as a conscious anti-germaphobe. However, after being incapacitated with the mono for the past 3 weeks (and, best I can figure, got it from a used glass), I will be thinking a little harder about sharing utensils in the future.

San Diego: ISO restaurants, markets and of course pizza.

My favorite pizza places in town are Luigi's (two locations in the midtown/downtown area) and Pizza Port in Solana Beach (North County).
As for markets- North Park Produce, Pancho Villa, and any of the Asian markets in the Convoy area (99 Ranch and Zion in particular) are excellent. Of course, we also have Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Oh, and don't forget the Mexican food. There was a recent post on fish tacos in San Diego, but it gets so much better than that. Happy eating, and enjoy your trip!

French in a Flash: Lavender-Apricot Chicken Drumsticks

After seeing this post, I knew exactly what I had to make for dinner tonight. I went to the market to get all my ingredients... lavender... apricot preserves... but where were the drumsticks?!?! I ended up getting the last package--it was hiding underneath a stack of thighs... but I was on a mission.
Kerry, your posts are always entertaining, and your food always looks/sounds lovely. This was my first foray into your culinary world, and mon dieu... I am in your debt.
To any curious eaters out there, this recipe was just as easy as it looks and the result was far more delicious than even I imagined.

what's good food to eat as you study?

Midterms and finals went one of two ways:
1) Tuna and a small amount of dark chocolate (tuna for the brain food, dark chocolate to keep me awake)
or... the less healthy of options, but more easily found on campus...
2) Pretzel/"cheddar cheese" Combos and Peanut Butter M&Ms... they became a signifier for "it's business time..."
That was also the only time I'd allow myself to drink regular Coke.
Good luck!

One meal in San Diego -- recommendations?

Old Town is great for tourists, but the overall quality of food at many of its restaurants has suffered greatly over the years. If you're willing to give up on the great view, the Hotel Solamar's restaurant is actually quite excellent. I'll also second the vote for Kous Kous. For tapas, I would actually vote for Costa Brava in Pacific Beach. And, if you really want a fish taco, forget Rubio's! Try El Zarape in the University Heights neighborhood (and make sure to try their avocado tomatillo salsa too). Unfortunately for the average visitor, most of San Diego's better food is located in (what even close-minded San Diegans believe to be) the less savory neighborhoods of San Diego. But, if you're not scared, here are some more options: Asmara (Eritrean restaurant in City Heights), El Salvadoreno (Salvadoran food just east of Downtown), and Island Spice (Jamaican place... also just east of Downtown). Don't forget that San Diego is basically famous for its plethora of taco shops. While locals usually have their own personal favorites, it's almost hard to go wrong at any of them. Good luck, and happy eating!

candied bacon recipe

Make sure you're going for the thick cut bacon! The first time I made "pig candy," I used (gasp) Oscar Meyer Thick Cut. I kid you not, upon first taste, I thought I had died and been re-born all in a single moment. I was not to experience this feeling again until my first bite of a pink lemonade macaron. In any case, the next time I made pig candy, I went for some Niman Ranch bacon, and it was awful! Salty... charred... gross. Thick cut... all the way... cover with brown sugar... bake at 375 for 15 minutes or so... flip (and baste with the bacon/sugar juice) and bake another 12 minutes... and you'll be in pig heaven.

Monin Syrup vs Da Vinci vs Torani: what do YOU prefer?

I have never tried Da Vinci syrups, but I can say that I usually prefer Monin over Torani. The lime and passion fruit flavors are among my favorites. As for the aforementioned "stranger flavours," I have tried the violet (and maybe lavender too) syrups in very small amounts as a sweetener in green tea. Those were delightful! I've also been tempted to ask my neighborhood cafe to put a shot of violet syrup in my hot chocolate. I haven't decided yet whether or not that's a terrible idea.

What is your favorite ice cream novelty?

I too am a fan of the frozen-chocolate-covered-banana (or, as I call them, "choco-naners"). Also Drumsticks... particularly with the caramel center. By the time I get down to that chocolate bit at the end of the cone, I'm convinced life can't get any better.

Large Movie Popcorn with Butter: 1,220 Calories

As a long-time manager of a movie theater, I can't bring myself to sneak in food (guilty conscience). While I am appalled by the prices theaters charge for their food, I understand that the concession stand is what generates the income to keep their business running. So, I actually make it a point to buy concessions when visiting a theater I like. My favorite combination- small popcorn (no butter) and a bag of peanut M&M's... mixed together... delicious!

Green garlic

I recently got a bunch of green garlic in my CSA box, and also had no idea what to do with it. Then I found a recipe for a chutney made from 2 parts cilantro, 1 part chopped green garlic, a chopped jalapeno pepper, some cumin, salt, and sugar, lime juice and peanuts- all blended in the food processor. Sorry, I can't find the recipe at the moment, but it was somewhat fool-proof, and the proportions seemed negotiable. Served with chicken... DELICIOUS!!!
