Gone but not forgotten

Back in the 80s, there were these round, barrel shaped salty snacks that were similar to "Combos" but they were called Cornquistos (not sure about the spelling) they had different flavors, but there was a picante flavored one that I just loved!! I would eat them by the bagful. Man, I miss those.

I'm going to be using a method that Alton Brown of Good Eats recommended, by soaking in a brine with ice water, then roasting in an oven that is first turned up to about 500 degrees, and then turned down lower for the longer roasting.

Do British Candy Bars Taste Better? Serious Eats Investigates

I was excited to see this because I read the Times article too and decided to do some investigating on my own. I am a native Texan and never had British chocolate until yesterday. I went to a local HEB grocery who does supply a few imported items and purchased four Nestle Yorkie bars. I went home, and opened the first one with anticipation. This chocolate bar is pure chocolate with nothing (cookies, wafers, etc) added. All I can say is "WOW"! There is a distinct difference in taste from what I have grown up with (Hershey's). The creamy texture, the rich chocolate taste that envelops your taste buds, the satisfying thickness of the segmented chunks of delicious chocolate. I am absolutely sold, and spent a large part of the evening cruising British food websites trying to decide which others to try next. I am reading that Mars bars are supposed to be sublime.

I am from Wales in the UK and I have a Second home in LA, and I go there around 6-7 times a year. The thing I miss the most going there is having Cadbury's Dairy Milk. there are so many gorgeous chocolates in the UK - Mars, Galaxy, Snickers, etc. And they just cant compare to the chocolate in the US. I will say the sweets/candy in the US in great, but the chocolate cant compare.

i will defend the black/white biscuits, they are kinda nice. everyone likes them in the UK!

I registered specifically to add my desire for
Regal Crown Sour Cherries!
I had a craving for them suddenly and went online to look for them only to find out they are discontinued. I am sad.

I also want to add one more gone but not forgotten, but I think I may be the only person who has ever eaten this cereal:
Concentrate
It turned to mush when milk was added and had a great taste. I guess most folks like their cereal crunchy but I never did.

My favorite cereal of all time ...
General Mills "JETS" (when they were shaped like Trix or Kix )

They changed the shapes to space vehicles and planes.
The taste and texture changed to something like Alpha-Bits. Not nearly as good.

I'm 56 and I still miss them!

Regal Crown Sour Cherry candies. Oh my god, they were awesome. And McDonald's Cherry Pie, deep fried, which was so ridiculously good I could barely stand it. Also, (head hanging in shame) Butoni used to make these toaster pizzas that I was addicted to. Even as I ate them I knew they were crap, and didn't care.

I'm noticing a theme here. Garbage. But, oh, so tasty garbage.

Gardetto's mustard pretzels. Though technically not discontinued, I have not been able to find them anywhere - and I've looked in every gas station and grocery store I've gone to for the last five years.

Also, Coke II. I used to live in American Samoa (where, apparently, it's still sold), and drank it daily. It was the only soda I ever drank on a regular basis, and I really liked it. I was sad to find out that it wasn't sold in the contenential States.

Charles' Chips. A Philly delicacy. They were put in a large can and they actually used to deliver them to peoples' homes. My grandparents used to get them all the time. This is when chips were fried in lard, but man o man, so good, y'all.

Can't wait for Fiddle Flakes. Really miss Van De Camps frozen Mac and cheese. Its had the little cruchies on top. Nothing evev compares. Anybody remember?

From Talk

The only thing I even remember is the McRib sandwich and Screaming Yellow Zonkers kind of rings a bell. Don't think I ever tasted either one, though. In what parallel universe have I been living?

Flaky Flix are only about the best cookie ever made! They are like a fudge-filled sugar wafer covered in chocolate fudge and sprinkled with something like crushed corn flakes.
And YES!!!!!! They are back!!!!!!! I am sitting here finishing off my first bag in over a year and am settling in to chocolate bliss! I found them today in my SaveMart in Paradise , CA (that's Northern California for those of you who aren't familiar with California towns), but have heard that they won't be available in Southern CA until later this year. Not sure on the release date for other areas. I can't find a website for the company. But be patient and, if your very lucky, they will be coming soon to a store near you!

Chocolate and caramel pudding cake mixes. The start from scratch ones are not as good.

The Spanish bar cake was a specialty of the A&P and sold under the Ann Page name. I miss it also,

Half coffee ice cream/half orange sherbet, I think it went by the name of Harvard or collegiate.

Sara Lee's orange cake.

Carnation Breakfast Bars, and not the chewy ones that came out at the end of their reign, but the Peanut Butter Crunch, or the Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter flavors. My college roommate and I lived on these things. We've done extensive internet searches to find out why/who we can contact about bringing these things back.

Also, Morton's Cinnamon Donuts (too funny, we were just talking about these at work the other day) and those Howard Johnson's Corn Toasty things.

My family would throw a fit if I did anything other than roast the turkey. It's simple and tastes good, so I figure why not just go with the flow? :)

Do British Candy Bars Taste Better? Serious Eats Investigates

I registered for this site just to make a comment on this point.

I lived in Ireland for over 6 years and was a devout chocaholic but when I moved back to Canada I found the chocolate here rather boring, tasteless and bland.

Fortunately I had brought back several huge Cadbury chocolate bars and a 1.5K tin of Roses' chocolates with me. Once they were gone, I tried to feed my habit on the vast variety of Canadian chocolate bars only to be disenchanted.

Make no mistake about it, British/Irish chocolate (we must not forget Belgium) is the best tasting in the world.

I confess that I enjoy having a Coffee Crisp once in a while but I just finished a Galaxy Ripple bar which I bought (along with a whole pile of UK goodies from an import source near me) and there is no comparison. It was moanful (not mournful) to say the least and I felt that I had indeed had a good chocolate fix.

Those who disagree have no taste buds!

How to Poach an Egg

all good but i do find that the easiest way for draining the water is to remove egg and place it on a piece of bread that you won't be eating. it soaks the extra water right up and then you can plate, put on toast etc....

Kevitivity-
Yes, the vinegar helps coagulate the white, so it hangs on to the yolk instead of forming 'strings' & drifting off into the poaching liquid before it has a chance to set

From Serious Eats

How to Poach an Egg

Does the vinegar serve some technical purpose?
