Serious Eats Neighborhood Guides: Robyn's Greenwood Heights (ish)

What about Giuseppina's (691 6th Ave between 21st St & 20th St) By the brother of Lucali's owner? I've only eaten there once but definitely thought the pie was just about on par w/ Lucali...

One year anniversary dinner

We had an awesome anniversary at Grocery. And Applewood is always great for celebrating. But if you need to keep the cost down, put together an indulgent picnic, get some good wine (or make a thermos of cocktails) and have dinner in Prospect Park.

Eat for Eight Bucks: Sweet Potato Leek Soup

Since you have $ leftover, I'd recommend a great tip I learned from the Farmgirl Fare website -- blend in a can of drained chickpeas or white beans. For less than a buck, it makes the soup much heartier without really changing the flavor (I do this now with most full-meal blended soups).

wonder if it's meant to be 3/4 cup... i would start with that and add more as necessary

Black Shack, Home of the Bizarro Whopper in New York City

@BigWoollyMammoth
fast food meats are "enhanced with artificial flavoring to maintain consistent taste. i spent some time at a flavor factory once with one of the flavor designers. he would dip a piece of paper in liquid and wave it under my nose and it would smell just like (e.g.) a whopper. he wouldn't say who the company's clients are specifically, but did confirm their (and other companies') flavors are in most fast food. Makes sense, right? Beef from different parts of the country/world tastes different. FF joints need to create consistent flavor (they do it with the fries, too). Crazy. Scary. Gross.

funny you have that headline but then didn't really seem to like the food much at all ('cept the spendy chops). just why SHOULD we go?

The Great American Food & Music Fest Is Today!

Ed,

You MUST step up with some serious damage control. A hedgey apology won't cut it (nor will closing the comments on your apology post). Make it clear that folks will get their money back and lay out exactly how they can go about it. Yep, you'll have to eat the cost of the event. But it will stave off the (more expensive) law suits.

Great Lake: Stunningly Good Pizza in Chicago

i assume you told him at some point you were writing a review (how else would Adam & SliceNY come up)? isn't that a major no no? or does serious eats have different standards for reviewing places. it just completely, inevitably alters how you are treated (free bread), how careful they are with your order, etc. i'm not saying this place secretly sucks -- it seems amazing. but i am curious about the SE policy on disclosing you're a reviewer.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 38: Embracing My Inner Bok Choy

you're doing fabulous! about a year ago, i also had an "appetite transplant" -- mostly gave up bread & started eating way more veg. i lost 30 pounds, easily, and now i don't even crave the stuff i used to. now i love me the veg.!!!
awesome, fast broccoli recipe -- cut a bunch into bite-size pieces. heat a little oil in a big nonstick skillet & cook the broccoli (stirring) on high until tender (it will get some nice charred-looking spots). turn off the heat & sprinkle liberally with thai fish sauce & lime juice. very flavorful, very easy.
p.s. my husband's a food inhaler, too. sometimes I look up from my 1st bite to see -- what the f*ck?! -- he's done eating.

Weekend Book Giveaway: 'The Saucier's Apprentice'

Not long after I started dating my (now) husband, his mother invited us for Rosh Hashanah dinner. In addition to celebrating the holiday, it would be a chance for all her friends to meet the shiksa her son had fallen for. Future mother-in-law asked me to bring an appetizer and I decided to show my stuff with a rather fancy chicken liver pate. At the dinner, everything was going swimmingly and all the guests were cooing over my meat spread. "How did you make it?" one asked. "Oh," I said to all the listening guests, "the secret to making it SO good... I soak the livers overnight in MILK!" Stunned silence. Pitying looks in the direction of my future MIL. What an idiot -- many Jews don't even let milk and meat in the same kitchen, forget about an all-night love romp in a tupperware. I knew that.
Luckily, no one there was strictly kosher. And eventually they all grew to like and embrace me. But that night there were doubts. Big-ass doubts.

Meeting Mario

"I decide to get tough..." -- after you've done more interviews, you'll learn that the question you asked next is the softess of softballs. It's a set-up meant to allow the interviewee to say, "on the contrary blah blah blah." if you want to do a puffy, fawning interview, best not to try and pretend it's anything different.
