Dinner in East Village?
Mostly to second peeps above -
warm borscht at Veselka's
The Stage diner on 2nd btwn 7th and 8th (fried meatloaf)
Itzocan is great "french" mexican (someone above mentioned) but could go over the $30.
Cafe Mogador - and east village classic (esp the brunch)
Criff Dogs
Caracas
brunch at the Smith
Chodorow's Tanuki Tavern Brings Marrow, Sake and Sushi to Hotel Gansevoort
FYI - "izakaya" is not specifically a sake bar, it's a place to drink (bar) with food. A gastropub seems a better description. I would say more people drink beer even...

Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
I second La Esquina downstairs. You couldn't possibly get any trendier, and dark. The food is actually good as well.

Impressive Lunch in NYC this Friday
I second Gotham. How about also the Modern? Park Avenue Autumn?
Casual dinner - Lupa if you can get a table, Blue Hill, Blaue Gans...
What's Your Favorite New York Cheesecake?
Eileen's - though admittedly I haven't tried that many. But I'm picky about my cheesecake.
Inexpensive but good sushi on the LES?
Sorry, I meant LES in the above post.
Inexpensive but good sushi on the LES?
No such thing in the east village. I do second Natori, though I myself have stopped going there for years because I thought it went downhill...
NYC Little Italy Bakery needed
Ann Marie,
I suppose it all depends on your expectations of "good", but I think very very few people who live in NYC would go to Little Italy for Italian food. But they certainly uphold a certain image of the old school American Italian restaurants, and that in it of itself may be good fun for a visitor. But if good food is truly what you are after, you might want to try elsewhere - in the neighborhood, Falai (also has a bakery/cakes) as well as Emporio are pretty good. You will not get spaghetti with meatballs or stuffed manicotti at these places though. Parisi's is a great place for huge sandwiches; and literally all the customers are local firemen and Italian Americans who have been going there for years.
Raising the Bar: A Different Kind of Burger at Clover Club
The lamb burger at BLT Burger is quite nice; better than their regular burgers in my mind. Give it a try if you get a chance!
Dumplings and Carb Slabs from Chinese Food
omg!!! looking at that sign, i just realized where the term "pot stickers" comes from (i'm japanese but we read chinese characters). I figuratively understood why they were called pot stickers, but always thought it was some crude american translation. In my non-Chinese understanding the first character symbolizes grandeur or ample-ness. It's the "tsu" in tsunami (nami means wave - so big wave) So I see it as VERY BEAUTIFUL POTSTICKERS.
Is West Village Joe Jr's About To Be History?
Oh nooooo! Where does one find this petition. We're going there for lunch pronto! I'm going to get a hangover just so I can go there!
New York Vacation - Where to eat
oh when i was your age, i started getting really into restaurants, this would have been such an awesome gift!
for cheap-ish or casual food
shake shack
ippudo
david's bagels or ess-a-bagel
kossar's bialys - and donut plant next door
shopsins
burger at peter lugers (lunch only) get a side of bacon - a must
red egg for dim sum
a nicer dining experience
lupa
spotted pig
eleven madison (lunch would be nice and less formal)
gramercy tavern
Bored in SoHo
Bun, Parigot, Patois, Aurora Soho, Hiroko's, Kori, Souths, Ruby's, Nyonya, Jobee...
These ladies eat and blog about their lunch every day precisely in your neighborhood.

casual lunch in nyc
If you're in the Chinatown area, this might be right up your alley.

Win Tickets to the Hot Dog Hootenanny
Completo - Chilean style
New Jersey Dispatch: The British Connection
Many of the Indian or Pakistani owned delis will have Aero Bars (a couple on 2nd ave in the east village for instance). And then, Myers of Keswick in the west village is the Manhattan equivalent of this store - http://www.myersofkeswick.com/
Win Tickets to Taste of Tribeca
Upstairs at Bouley!
Looking for a really good Vietnamese restaurant...
Ask any Vietnamese person (which I'm not) and they will tell you that there aren't any. But I think there are some hopeful ones popping up run by young Vietnamese food lovers, who are dissatisfied for precisely the above mentioned reason. Stay tuned! Other than that, Xe Lua on 86 Elizabeth is pretty good.
Is the fish and chips at A Salt and Battery worth seeking out?
It's good but not very authentic, if that matters at all. I think the Chip Shop in Brooklyn is supposed to be better. But I don't think if you're visiting NYC, it's a 'must' - unless you come here a lot.
Where to find pickled eggs in NYC?
Another super easy way to make them: In college we used to just drop hard boiled eggs into the pickled beets jar (eat the beets, keep the vinegar).
Emergency Birthday Dinner Help: NYC Restaurant for Group of 25
We got 2 tables recently for about 25 at Hill Country. Everyone pays for their own food too, so it's kind of nice if you are concerned about friends having to split the tab, etc.
Liberté Yogurt: My Holy Grail of Dairy Products
Liberte is great! Could I also recommend Cream on Top - Brown Cow Coffee? They discontinued my favorite Lemon Flavor... Don't get turned off by the Coffee factor, it's amazing!!!
Dinner in East Village?
why has no one mentioned The Dumpling Man?
Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
i second Mercadito, also Mesa Coyocan in brooklyn - but if you want the same food in Manhattan - go to Barrio Chino - not much different and the chef used to work there. But Barrio Chino is pretty small and you might have to wait for a table.
A really underrated place is Palador on 34th street - it's really quality food and authentic and romantic.
Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
zarela on 2nd avenue between 50th and 51st streets. It's a bit noisy downstairs at night (near the bar) but ask for a table upstairs near the window. cuisine is from oaxaca. amazing mole sauce. desserts to die for. great sangria and margaritas. sometimes zarela herself comes around and greets the guests.
Dinner in East Village?
I like Motorino on E. 12th for great pizza.......
Supper on E. 2nd for really delicious pastas made fresh to order and DBGB for great burgers.
The East Village is so good.......don't forget about Katz's deli for great pastrami sandwiches, though it is kind of gross in there.
Dinner in East Village?
Cafe Itzocan is really excellent, though on the tiny side. Supper is also very good, especially as the weather gets colder.
NOT the Indian restaurants. They're terrible. But Sigiri is good and different.
Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
La Esquina certainly fits the romantic and trendy bill. But there's attitude to go with it. Mercadito on Avenue B is dark and romantic and just as delicious. (Mexicana Mama on 13th isn't so romantic, but it's good Mexican!)
Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
I second Mercadito! It's great stuff. There are two of them, but I've only been to the one on Grove St. It's cosy and authentic.
Dinner in East Village?
Mama's on east 3rd and Ave A has some awesome comfort food!
Rai Rai Ken (forgot the street...11th? 10th) between 1st and 2nd has really good and authentic Japanese noodles
Little Poland has affordable, hearty Polish food (but I wouldn't reccomend for date night, since it feels like eating in your Polish grandma's kitchen)
Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
i like suenos in chelsea - i took my husband there for his birthday and the food was amazing. rosa mexicano is good too, though i wouldn't necessarily say romantic. if you feel like making the trek to brooklyn, mesa coyoacan in williamsburg has really great food, affordable prices and a great atmosphere - much smaller and more intimate than most of the other places that have been mentioned.
Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
Hell's Kitchen on 9th Ave & 47th serves Mexican fusion and is also super romantic and trendy and fun for a dinner date.
Dinner in East Village?
- BEST sushi (and i just came back from japan): takahachi, av b bet 5/6th
- old-school ev: orlin, st. marks bet 1/2nd
- italian: supper, 2nd & 2nd or della pace on 7th/2nd
- great, but too crowded to ever eat there: clinton st. baking co. on clinton @ houston
Dinner in East Village?
The following are my must-eat places:
Caracas for arepas,
Ippudo for ramen,
Taishou for Japanese izakaya,
Polonia for pierogis (better than Veselka in my opinion),
Num Pang for Cambodian style sandwiches,
Panna for Indian,
Sigiri for Sri Lankan,
Porchetta for pork belly,
and Chikalicious for NY's best cupcakes!
All these are in your price range of $30 but Cafe Cortadito is also a must-eat although slightly more expensive.. they have the best churrascos and tres leches in town!
Dinner in East Village?
I 2nd @hazenyc Momofuku Ssam is one of the best restaurants in the city, but that's not anything new.
I like Sunburnt cow too, but only if you really like to drink. Otherwise, the unlimites cocktail brunch isn't worth it. Especially since the one time I went, my party was forced to get up and leave our table to make room for other brunchers. We had to finish our cocktails at the bar, which was weird at 1pm.
Dinner in East Village?
i lived in the hood for 3 1/2 years and some of my faves are:
Apiary
Cafecito (cuban .. ave C and 12th st)
DBGB
Sunburnt Cow (for unlimited cocktail brunch -- Ave C. also)
Soba-Ya
Do-Sirak (korean food NOT korean bbq)
Mama Mexico Centro
Hiro (for sushi)
The Smith (for Brunch only)
Caracas (venezuelan arepas)
Momofuku Ssam
Dinner in East Village?
supper, terroir, or the new motorino! all fabulous options...
Chodorow's Tanuki Tavern Brings Marrow, Sake and Sushi to Hotel Gansevoort
You can have bone marrow like that at DBGB, presumably at the bar too.
Impressive Lunch in NYC this Friday
@adamKuban So great! After looking at the menus our out of towners decided that Grammercy Tavern was sounded like a winner, we could only get in early, but they loved it. Impressive and not too expensive, so we could still afford to eat at a local nuevo Mexican for dinner!
@mookie agreed, and we did spend a day eating our way from midtown to chinatown. they were as impressed with fried chicken in koreatown, burgers from shake shack and cookies from mmff milk bar as they were with GT. but GT provided the nyc glitz they were looking for as well.
overall, i just feel lucky to have guests (family no less) who like eating around nyc as much as i do!
Impressive Lunch in NYC this Friday
@mycherrypie: How'd it go over?
Sliders in the City?
Lobster roll sliders at Stanton Social!
Sliders in the City?
There is a White Castle in Manhattan... 8th and 36th-37th
Impressive Lunch in NYC this Friday
See ... All those places sound great. But to me? An impressive in lunch for out of towners would be taking someone to baogette for awesome banh mi, or caracas for some delicious arepas , momomfuku for some ridiculous ramen ... I love NY food for the diverse, delicious, cheap eats you can get. I think it's something that a lot of other cities are missing. And you can top it all off with dessert from the cupcake truck :)
Impressive Lunch in NYC this Friday
These are all such great ideas, thanks everyone! I think we're going to try Jean-Georges, I don't think I would have guessed they had a $28 prix fixe lunch!
Sliders in the City?
Ah??? White Castle In NYC? You did say sliders right?
