Motorino in Manhattan

We went there yesterday for lunch. Thought it was good enough - but if I were being really critical, it wasn't nearly as good as the Brooklyn one which we went last about 3 months ago. The crust under the topping was too thin and soggy. I would go back, but not in any rush to.

I second La Esquina downstairs. You couldn't possibly get any trendier, and dark. The food is actually good as well.

Dinner in East Village?

Mostly to second peeps above -
warm borscht at Veselka's
The Stage diner on 2nd btwn 7th and 8th (fried meatloaf)
Itzocan is great "french" mexican (someone above mentioned) but could go over the $30.
Cafe Mogador - and east village classic (esp the brunch)
Criff Dogs
Caracas
brunch at the Smith

FYI - "izakaya" is not specifically a sake bar, it's a place to drink (bar) with food. A gastropub seems a better description. I would say more people drink beer even...

NYC Little Italy Bakery needed

Ann Marie,

I suppose it all depends on your expectations of "good", but I think very very few people who live in NYC would go to Little Italy for Italian food. But they certainly uphold a certain image of the old school American Italian restaurants, and that in it of itself may be good fun for a visitor. But if good food is truly what you are after, you might want to try elsewhere - in the neighborhood, Falai (also has a bakery/cakes) as well as Emporio are pretty good. You will not get spaghetti with meatballs or stuffed manicotti at these places though. Parisi's is a great place for huge sandwiches; and literally all the customers are local firemen and Italian Americans who have been going there for years.

Dumplings and Carb Slabs from Chinese Food

omg!!! looking at that sign, i just realized where the term "pot stickers" comes from (i'm japanese but we read chinese characters). I figuratively understood why they were called pot stickers, but always thought it was some crude american translation. In my non-Chinese understanding the first character symbolizes grandeur or ample-ness. It's the "tsu" in tsunami (nami means wave - so big wave) So I see it as VERY BEAUTIFUL POTSTICKERS.

Looking for a really good Vietnamese restaurant...

Ask any Vietnamese person (which I'm not) and they will tell you that there aren't any. But I think there are some hopeful ones popping up run by young Vietnamese food lovers, who are dissatisfied for precisely the above mentioned reason. Stay tuned! Other than that, Xe Lua on 86 Elizabeth is pretty good.

Is the fish and chips at A Salt and Battery worth seeking out?

It's good but not very authentic, if that matters at all. I think the Chip Shop in Brooklyn is supposed to be better. But I don't think if you're visiting NYC, it's a 'must' - unless you come here a lot.

Another super easy way to make them: In college we used to just drop hard boiled eggs into the pickled beets jar (eat the beets, keep the vinegar).

Motorino in Manhattan

Motorino's pizza is very close to the napolitano pizza I grew up with in Italy. It's not American-style pizza. I understand it's different. I love it! If the chef is there, he inspects the pies. I've seen him throw away pies that were too charred.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I agree with you. was there two night ago and had the margherita. Very good crust. poor toppings, by which I mean not enough of all and too much oil.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

My wife and I were there a month ago. Service was great. The flavors were great. I like a nice charred crust, but they were a little burnt in my opinion. I have only been there once, I would go back anytime.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I went there recently for lunch, and for me (at least), it committed two of the cardinal sins that no restaurant should ever commit - don't advertise a lunch (or any) special on your website if you don't actually do it, and charge prices significantly higher than what is listed on the menu posted on your website. Motorino did both, and while my Sopresseta pizza was tasty and the crust was very very good it had too little cheese and sopresseta and too much liquidy (though very good) tomato sauce. Not going back. At all.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

In Manhattan? Hmm.... I like Patsy's, Artichoke, Totonno, Pizza 33... and while this is less conventional of a pizza.. i really like Nina's on the UES... it's not a New York style pizza... but the pipping hot cheese.. and the oddly pizza-hut like crust... i don't know.. it's really good...

But with Motorino.. 3 of my friends asked me how it was today.. and I cannot recommend Motorino's to anybody I know..... Maybe because I didn't order more than just one pizza? Maybe bad night? in any case... i was disappointed... I would try Motorino's again.. as long as I'm not buying.. :)

@sushi burger: What is your favorite pizza in manhattan?

I love motorino although I do think their crust can be a bit poofy. I grew up in Florence. Motorino's pie reminds me of one of my favorite pizza places from home.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I had truly extraordinary pizza at the Manhattan Motorino two days ago for lunch. I ordered three pies, the brussels sprouts and pancetta, spicy soppressata, and a margherita. The crust was slightly chewy and crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The crusts were not soggy at all. I brought them back to SE World HQ and everyone seemed to agree that this was world-class pizza.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

@nithya at hungrydesi: It's awesome... Next weekend: Burger from song 7.2, ramen @ ippudo (if the line is short enough, otherwise setagaya), slice @ artichoke and dessert @ milk bar.... can't wait...

I also second the soggy crust... my sauce / cheese was dropping everywhere...

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I've only been once (and never to the Bklyn location), but I thought it was pretty up there in terms of a good pie. That being said, they forgot to put garlic on my pie, which as a pregnant woman who is craving massive quantities of garlic, annoyed me. Service was good though as they were apologetic.

Now on to the crust - I thought it was a little too burnt and crunchy so I find these comments about it being too soggy interesting. Still, the cheese was sufficient and the sauce was flavorful and aplenty.

@sushiburger - I love the idea of "eat small bits here and there" in St. Marks. Yum.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I went recently, and actually pickle, I agree with you about the crust being a little too thin and soggy... like a wet papertowel, just barely strong enough to stay in one piece under the toppings. That said, it was delicious and I felt the flavors were all spot-on. The lunch special is a great deal too, I would get it again.

Of course you can still comment Paulie, but I suspect you won't have much time to, soon!

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I've been to the Manhattan one four times now and always been happy. Service has actually been stellar, especially compared to the previous occupant's.

We always get the spicy soppressata and the "white" pie. I wasn't really thrilled with the margherita or the butternut squash ones. The brussels sprouts one is good and was actually better the 2nd time we tried it.

Count me in as a happy customer.

i second Mercadito, also Mesa Coyocan in brooklyn - but if you want the same food in Manhattan - go to Barrio Chino - not much different and the chef used to work there. But Barrio Chino is pretty small and you might have to wait for a table.
A really underrated place is Palador on 34th street - it's really quality food and authentic and romantic.

From Talk

zarela on 2nd avenue between 50th and 51st streets. It's a bit noisy downstairs at night (near the bar) but ask for a table upstairs near the window. cuisine is from oaxaca. amazing mole sauce. desserts to die for. great sangria and margaritas. sometimes zarela herself comes around and greets the guests.

I like Motorino on E. 12th for great pizza.......
Supper on E. 2nd for really delicious pastas made fresh to order and DBGB for great burgers.
The East Village is so good.......don't forget about Katz's deli for great pastrami sandwiches, though it is kind of gross in there.

Cafe Itzocan is really excellent, though on the tiny side. Supper is also very good, especially as the weather gets colder.

NOT the Indian restaurants. They're terrible. But Sigiri is good and different.

From Talk

La Esquina certainly fits the romantic and trendy bill. But there's attitude to go with it. Mercadito on Avenue B is dark and romantic and just as delicious. (Mexicana Mama on 13th isn't so romantic, but it's good Mexican!)

I second Mercadito! It's great stuff. There are two of them, but I've only been to the one on Grove St. It's cosy and authentic.

From Talk

Mama's on east 3rd and Ave A has some awesome comfort food!
Rai Rai Ken (forgot the street...11th? 10th) between 1st and 2nd has really good and authentic Japanese noodles
Little Poland has affordable, hearty Polish food (but I wouldn't reccomend for date night, since it feels like eating in your Polish grandma's kitchen)

From Talk

i like suenos in chelsea - i took my husband there for his birthday and the food was amazing. rosa mexicano is good too, though i wouldn't necessarily say romantic. if you feel like making the trek to brooklyn, mesa coyoacan in williamsburg has really great food, affordable prices and a great atmosphere - much smaller and more intimate than most of the other places that have been mentioned.
