Do You Have Any 'Once In A Wifetime' Recipes?

about twice a year I go all out and make chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, & cream gravy. Oh lord it's good, but it turns my kitchen into a disaster area and then there is the whole breaded and fried cube steak with butter/milk mashers, & fat, flour, & cream gravy-hello calories!

I learned the secret to great Chicken Fried Steak years ago from a friend from Atlanta: finely crushed Saltine crackers! dip the cube steak in flour, then egg wash, and finally in saltine crumbs. Salty, crispy, DELICIOUS!

School Food we actually LIKE...

Poway High School, Poway, California 1987: during lunch period there these rolling carts set up at various places on campus and they had among other things a deep fried burrito stuffed with american cheese, refried beans, and whole pinto beans. It was molten lava when you bit into it, but ultimately it was the greatest burrito EVER!

Cook the Book: Chinese Chicken Salad

I have a 1957 edition of the Better Homes & Gardens Cook Book that includes a recipe for Oriental salad that is essentially our modern version. The only thing different is what you see in bad Chinese Chicken Salads all over--the canned fried noodle. yuck :)

Puck can get lots of credit for California cuisine and bbq chicken pizza, but not this salad.

I just got back from my hometown of Poway in San Diego County and I successfully ate at:
Shein of Osaka in RB
Fish House Vera Cruz in San Marcos
Rubio's
Fin's in the Golden Triangle (the best fish tacos in the world and the most amazing Shrimp burrito)
Roberto's rolled tacos
and of course, In-n-Out, double double, fries and lemonade!

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

just a few weeks ago, I pulled a pie crust out of the freezer, rolled it out, slathered peach preserves on it, folded it over and baked it. Gooey goodness and flaky pie crust. god it was so good.

Eat for Eight Bucks: Spaghetti in Creamy Pea Sauce with Crisped Prosciutto

I will eat anything except peas. ANYTHING! ugh, fresh, canned, frozen, whatever, it is still a small ball with a resistant skin filled with mush that explodes in your mouth.

Now pea soup...that is a horse of a different color. mmmm, no exploding mush!
