Cook the Book: 'Serious Barbecue' by Adam Perry Lang
About 10 years ago I was going to a potluck picknick, and was seriously broke. I had a pork roast in the freezer, but no bbq sauce. I used homemade frozen applesauce,Heinz Ketchup, garlic, onion,a little redpepper ,& Lea 'n' Prines. I cooked the roast slow overnite in my little Smoky Joe's charcoal grill, then pulled & chopped it ,put my already cooked sauce on it ,then put it in the oven for about 30 min. @ 325. It tasted good to me, but when one of my older sisters asked what brand bbq sauce it was, so she could get some, I told her I made it. At first she seemed skeptical , then wanted the recipie. I told her I didn't have one, but told her what I put in it. Then she asked how much each & I said I don't know till it tasted good. Then she said, "You are just like Mom!" That made me feel pretty good 'cause Mom's a great cook & I must admit I felt a little smug about it too. Over the years since I've had some cullinary adventures, some good, some bad, but I'm still diggin' it.
The Icing vs. Frosting Debate
I have been told that icing is cooked, and frosting is not. Also frosting is made with confectioners sugar, but icing can be made with regular [crystal] sugar or confectioners sugar. Glaze is very thin, may be cooked or not , and can be made with either type of sugar depending on whether it is cooked or not.
Morphy Richards FoodFusion Kitchen Machine You ever see this?
years ago,{ about 28 yrs} Oster had a version of this. both my older sister & i had one. it was a great space saver & worked pretty well, the major problem was with the motor doing triple duty it began to get slow &bog down after it got some age on it,but i used it a good 10 yrs; maybe a little longer.
Barbecue: Smoked and Spiced Nuts
my husband has a smoker grill, looks like i just found a great new use for it. we all love nuts! Thanks a bunch Joshua!
Serious Cookies: Shuna Fish Lydon's Shortbread
I also would love a conversion to volume on this recipe, I'm just lazy I guess. But it sounds way yum! I used to have a Scotch shortbread recipe that only had 3 ingredients, flour, sugar, & butter. I think it was in a cookbook I lost due to a flooded kitchen . We had gone to my hubbies parents for Christmas and it got very cold ,below zero for several days, came home to about 3 inches of water in kitchen.I kept cookbooks on the bottom shelf of a built in dish cabinet that lived right next to the hot water heater, the pipe leading into it was the one that busted. {of course} I didn't lose them all , but I did lose several old ones. It seemed like the paper just turned to mush .

Weird parental food preparation
My Mom was a good cook, but was known to local hunters as the woman who would cook anything at least once. My worst food memory ? probably bearmeat, it was sweet, strong, greasy, and musky all at the same time. Oh and of non-game selections it has to be the pressure cooked beef tongue. That was bad. I really can't say what it tasted like. One look and no way was I eatin' that. And it stunk! Hard!
Cook the Book: 'Margaritas, Mojitos & More'
I love limes, orange slices, and maraschino cherries.
Cook the Book: Lidia's Italy
Stuffed whole baked salmon gets raves every time. For Italian I go for lasagna with Italian sausage or fettuccine carbonara. I once made a simple banana pudding at a girls group my daughter was involved with. One teen looked at me with awe and said,"You can do that without instant pudding? I didn't know that was possible.'' You never know, sometimes when I've gone all out no one even notices. I guess it all evens out in the end.

My standby is the vegetable lo mein on the buffet at my local Chinese restaurant with the sauce from General Tso's Chicken & maybe a few pieces of the chicken,& some of the sauteed greenbeans with garlic & what they call Chinese Pickle. Now I think I have to go get some, right now! Bye.
Win Your Thanksgiving Turkey!
No question, it's creamed turkey on toast. My Mom always made it. The word creamed is missleading because there was no cream involved,it's just cut up turkey, broth (homemade or canned) thickened with cold milk &cornstarch, or you can make a roue with turkey drippings and flour, a little salt &your done. Put on toast. Simple but divine.
