A Year Later, FDA Proposes Menu Labeling Requirements

I second everything shady lane said.

And anyway, there is information about all sorts of things EVERYWHERE in our world today. There are people who choose to ignore it, people who take it in as they come across it, and people who actively seek it.

I don't see how this is any different than when the FDA started requiring nutritional labels on foods in grocery stores. Extra, easily available information is not going to kill you. Ignorance can.

Annoying or Not: "Surprise Me"

I'm no stranger to mixed drinks, but even I sometimes can't out my finger on what I'm in the mood for. When that's the case, a smile and "What do you like to drink?" to the bartender usually results in something interesting, if not your new favorite drink.

Anyway, trying new things, including types of alcohol, helps expand your base of knowledge and experience so that you know what you do and don't like! There are places I've been that have a "wheel'o'beer" to spin when you can't decide on a selection, haha.

Names of restaurants in your city that make you cringe

In Cambridge MA, there's a bar and restaurant called Lord Hobo.

Watertown MA, Strip Ts. Not a steakhouse. Just awkward.

And I know its not a restaurant, but where I live in Brighton MA, there's a Hurley's Liquors, haha.

Vegetarians: would you eat something cooked in a skillet...

I've had vegetarian friends who lived in apartments where all the roommates were either vegan or vegetarian, and meat products were banned from entering the house.

I suppose it all comes down to ones reason for vegetarianism, whether it is to control what goes into your body, or to control what you financially support through your purchases or actions (I am reminded of freeganism as an extreme on that end).

Boston: Baingan Bhartha at Punjab Palace

I love Punjab Palace. I've lived in the Allston/Brighton area for years, and this really is the best Indian food in the area, in my opinion. The mutter paneer is fantastic as well.

Chocolate covered pretzels! Or gummi bears, or cherries or... really anything covered in chocolate, haha.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 101: Post-Holiday Euphoria

Great job! I'm right back on the 'wagon' with you, and having protein in the morning as well, in the form of egg whites, veggies and lowfat cheese. Not my favorite, and obviously more time consuming than a bowl of cereal, but it really sets me up for diet success all day! I wish you a continued losing streak.

Weekend Cook and Tell: Adventurous Vegetables

I've actually been trying to pick up any fruits and vegetables I've never eaten when I see them at the market in season. Most recently that included persimmons (hate to admit I didn't care for them!) and parsnips. But I've never cooked fennel either, so maybe that will be next.

Low-Fat Brownies: Applesauce vs. Yogurt

I've made black bean brownies and adzuki bean brownies. They're very dense and fudge-like, the sweet adzuki bean adds a nice subtle flavor. Uh, and you don't have to 'stay close to home' after eating them, unless your diet is completely devoid of fiber normally.
