New Orleans: Head to Coop's Place for Po' Boy Burgers

I'm from New Orleans and Coop's Place is beloved. One thing: I've heard of people having trouble getting in because it's technically 21+.

36 Hours in New Orleans: Where to Eat

So thrilled to read this story, especially since I've only got three days left in NOLA before I go back to school. Seems mostly spot-on, though I usually pick Parkway Bakery over Domilise's, and in all honesty, I'd probably go for a gelato double feature (first at La Divina and then at Sucré down the block). I haven't been to Stanley recently, but I'm pretty sure (don't quote me on this) that both they and Drago's aren't selling Gulf oysters. I'd love for someone to set me straight, but as far as I've seen, while there's plenty of Gulf seafood that's fair game, oysters have been harder hit.

Other great places: Lilette, La Petite Grocery, Boucherie, Herbsaint (another Donald Link restaurant), Cochon Butcher as colleen7583 said, Mondo (Susan Spicer's newest endeavor) or Bayona... We are an eating city to the core, even after all the disasters.

Interview with a Chocolatier: Christopher Michael in Costa Mesa, CA

Great interview. The blood orange caramel sounds like enough to make me melt. I love how he defines chocolate snobbery - exactly as it should be.

Serious Reads: Hungry Town, by Tom Fitzmorris

Reading these comments makes me happy... Serious Eaters know where to eat in this lovely lovely city I come from! Another awesome review. The book's message is resoundingly true; we really are a city that lives to eat, and that was never more clear than in Katrina's aftermath. We all unite around it. Fitzmorris is a really controversial local character. Olddad is right that Tom doesn't have a glistening personality, and he's recently been admonished for claiming that all Vietnamese food is a variation on pho (ha! WHAT WOULD HEATHER SAY?). But you can't deny that he loves this city and knows it intimately, and I'm glad he's written a book so the whole world can hear more about our glorious food culture.

Serious Reads: The Man Who Ate the World, by Jay Rayner

Great review, Leah! I've had this on my list of to-read food books without knowing all that much about the book itself. You've sold me on it, though. Hopefully I can tackle it before we had back to school (my list is ambitious, though). I got a marvelous idea while I wrote this comment and I'm gonna go write it on your Facebook lest I forget to check follow-up comments here.

Market Scene: Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers' Market in Providence, Rhode Island

Leah, still so excited to see your SE posts... and my god, I was so excited when I saw this table set up at the Gate with local food, including Narragansett Creamery foodstuffs. No pirate spread to my chagrin, but I did pick up some Angelito... really, though, HOW do you open these little containers!?

The Future of School Lunch Reform

Leah, AWESOME! I was reading through my SE feed for today and saw that this was by Leah Douglas. Was shocked by the coincidence. Read the blurb and saw it WAS you - how utterly kickass. Let's chitchat after Ethnic Eats on Thursday, shall we?

Ready for the Big Game?

I'm from New Orleans celebrating the Super Bowl at my New England school (living next door to a bunch of Colts fans), so I'm trying to make as much New Orleans-y stuff as possible. There will be Kenji's wings, bacon-wrapped jalapeños, and the requisite chips-salsa-and-guac, but there will also be a vat of jambalaya and Cajun caramel corn, plus beignets and black-and-gold brownies. Anyone who will wear black and gold is welcome... I am SO excited!

What Are Your New Year's Food Resolutions?

I'm a freshman at Brown and almost always resort to our cafeteria's mediocre olive oil and balsamic vinegar as a salad dressing. Seriously, making a vinaigrette is SO EASY, so one of my resolutions this year is to start making vinaigrettes to encourage me to eat more veggies. Bonus points if I make them in the cafeteria on the spot - hey, we've got Grey Poupon Dijon mustard, so at least a French dressing won't be too hard.

Frozen Shrimp: To Use or Not to Use?

As a native New Orleanian, I am totally spoiled by seafood of all sorts and have impossibly high shrimp standards. Fresh-from-the-ocean Royal Reds are my favorite (they taste like Maine lobster!), but fresh gulf shrimp are phenomenal, too. I've had them alongside frozen shrimp and there was a HUGE difference in plumpness, sweetness, size, and color. Fresh shrimp all the way, beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Does anyone carry their own condiments around?

Crystal hot sauce > Tabasco.
And now that I'm moving from New Orleans to Providence for college, I'll be carrying a steady supply of Crystal hot sauce and Tony Chachere's seasoning everywhere I go.

Potato Crisps from Luxirare

These chips gave rise to an exuberant bout of reverie from me. I agree; Luxirare has the most stunning photography, and her daring in the kitchen is really inspiring.

Has Anyone Had Sister Schubert's Rolls or Marshall's Biscuits?

I can think of no better way to start the day than with Marshall's biscuits. When I was little, my mom would sometimes put them in the oven in time for them to be piping hot and ready to be buttered by the time I got to the table. It was always such a big treat when that happened.

Photo of the Day: '$169 a Pound'

I LOVE Iberico bellota. There's an amazing artisanal cheese shop here that also offers sandwiches, salads, cheese/pate/chutney plates for lunch, etc. They've recently started stocking Iberico bellota and it makes me go weak in the knees.
