In Season: Sweet Potatoes

I love just simply roasting diced up sweet potatoes with olive oil, lots of salt and pepper, sometimes chili powder or curry powder.

Simple, Juicy Burgers at White Rose Bar & Grill in York, Pennsylvania

We went to the White Rose yesterday after YorkFest specifically to try the burgers - fantastic! Too big to even finish, but absolutely delicious. Next time I will get a plain cheeseburger, because the meat itself had more than enough flavor that we didn't even need the rest of the fanfare on top. Thanks for the great recommendation!

At my cafe, one of our most popular sides are our sweet potato hash browns which we serve year round. I have never been a fan of sweet potato fries but I do dig the hash browns. Simple to make, too. Shred a sweet potato using a food processor or box grater. Toss the hash with some corn starch to coat them and simply cook on a medium high griddle with a little canola oil. When they are brown and crisp flip for about a minute more. We season ours with a mix that is 5% cayenne pepper and 95% cinnamon.

In Season: Sweet Potatoes

I've OD'd on sweet potatoes this year... the CSA I get had a lot of them the last couple of months. It did cause me to try a lot of new recipes. Sweet potato pie, sweet potato gnocchi, sweet potato latkes were some of the highlights.

I love sweet potatoes by themselves! Roasted in the oven, they make their own sweet glaze, hence why they're called sweet potatoes. Yum.

my fiance is obsessed with sweet potatoes right now. we're having them almost every day. I've been trying some more adventurous things, like sweet potato gnocchi, but mostly i just toss with a touch of olive oil and what ever spices match the rest of the meal. I never use butter. I think they are plenty creamy without it.

Call me crazy, but I like them plain--no butter--with lots of salt.

Thanks for the list! I'll have to try some of these recipes. My favorite is simply baked with a pat (or three) of butter. Yum.

I am crazy about sweet potatoes, and it's kismet that I should read this post on SE right now, directly after having devoured a sweet po with butter, cinnamon, cayenne, brown sugar and sea salt -- and blogging about it! (http://thenervouscook.com)

Appalled at the Bigotry Oct 3rd 2009

Well, first off, I have to give kudos for one item at the White rose. We were all very happy with the food (yum salmon wrapped in bacon). But, what happened next will probably keep us all from ever going back.
To start as we were all but finished our food. The (management) came out and canned the entertainment in the middle of his set. (Live acoustic guitar) It was very nice and he could actually sing (on key). As he packed(broke down) his gear; a somber note rang throughout the lounge area as the gentlemen removed his equipment and the management put the awful fm radio back on. As a side note we approached the musician; he shared the little factoid; he was told to quit because he wasn’t right for the crowd. Oddly though that LOTS of people were singing along with him (the musician). Anyway, that isn’t the reason why we will never return just yet.
We were now done eating (an hour and half had passed) and the waitress took away all our plates and utensils. This is when my sister got a text from a friend about dropping by to join us for a couple drinks. He arrived within a few minutes and went up to the bar and got his beer. Then we talked about all sorts of things for roughly 30 minutes. Then another friend texted us and joined us. Now here is where it starts to go under for our party of 6 which just spent over a 100.00 on food not to mention the drinks on top of that. Our new guest went to the bar and got his draft. Now we chatted for another roughly another 10 mins MAX. Then a member of management came over and started to harass our first guest. His ID was cracked; and he was told he could no longer be served and should leave. We all piped up and said perhaps he should check all our IDs (Mind you none of our party was carded at all and served multiple times) – An it should also be noted our latest guest LOOKED like they might be 18 at best, However, our young looking guest is as gay as a 3 dollar bill and Mexican/Native American and perhaps they didn’t want to be so bold as to play that race and discrimination card. Yet, we know now they don’t like people of color, since the person they harassed incessantly was black and was threatened with calling the police. Mind you, this person (our black friend) was as quiet as a mouse during most of our conversations among ourselves. So in closing, if you are a lily white group of people keep it as such, if you want to have a good time. But, if you want to get kicked out and bullied by Bigots – By all means invite your friends of color. It will just make your bloody day. – Perhaps they should rename themselves the ((White Lily)) – Anyway, none of us will set foot in their establishment again. SHAME since they had good food, but, I don’t endorse BIGOTS.

If there's a hands down, all around winner - and I'm not saying there is - it's Alton Brown. He's smart. He's creative. He's talented . And he's adorable. .

Aarón Sánchez is just perfect.... he is so funny, talented, and down to business... I love his laugh... and the serious face he pulls on "Chopped" when he has to judge. I wish him the best. xoxox

Tyler Florence used to be my fav FN hottie then he got puffy. Strangely I find Adam Richman on Travel channel's man vs food to be sexy and hes definitely on the beefy side but a cutie none the less. Id also have to say Iron Chef Symon with his soul patch.

I have had many a beef sandwich at the White Rose, but never a burger. Guess I'll have to try it when I'm up that way again. Since we get there only a few times per year, I like the Roadhouse's 10 oz. burgers on old Rte. 30 across form the old Stony Brook Drive-In.

Wow, first of all I have to say lay off Tyler for gaining weight. Holy crap ladies, you would not tollerate those kind of comments about a woman.

When I first started watching Emeril I thought he was very sexy/cute. The major determining factor for me is definately personality-- I love Guy Fieri, and I soooooooo love Duff Goldman! These are guys you know would be fun in and out of the kitchen! While Bobby Flay, Curtis Stone and the like are very physically attractive, they lack personality big-time. I think Ramsay is great too-- he is all fire! And isn't this poll about heat?

Unfortunately, none of the FN men compare to the sex appeal of the hottest woman on the network-- Nigella Lawson! She exudes sensuality and emphasises the look, taste and texture of food. Show me a man who makes food that appealing!

The ultimate food master Masaharu Morimoto
Wolfgang Puck - he is old, but the way he handles food is sexy!
Same for Jacques Pepin
Tyler
Alton
Martin Yan
Jacques Torres
and just love Fabio Viviani - somebody give him an show!!

I forgot the name of the french chef with long hair on the Top Chef Masters. I found him incredibly hot. He's off limits but a girl can still dream. Tall and solid. I also liked the way he behaved.

I definitely second all the votes for Tony Bourdain. Sexy.

Also, if we're talking about judges on Chopped, I can't believe no one else has mentioned Scott Conant!! That smile?!? Come on!

From Talk

I am between Jamie Oliver (when his first series began The Naked Chef and he still had his long hair and his lisp!) and Anthony Bourdain (even though he is on The Travel Channel now) since the Food Network still plays reruns of A Cooks Tour here-and-there. His attitude just turns me on!

I want to sneak into his luggage and stow me away to Vietnam so I can eat chiles with him on those boats at the water markets. Also I want to eat pig parts with him in Bangkok in the night snack carts! Mmmm...take me away Tony! I'll wear my Ramones t-shirt and prove my love to you!
