Weekend Cook and Tell: Homemade Holidays

@larkspurKC, I just made some BBQ Almonds last night using Bacon Salt as one of the ingredients and they turned out really well. Some people at work were telling me I should make them as gifts for Christmas.

Did the Internet Kill 'Gourmet' Magazine?

I agree with some of the posters who have mentioned Goumet wasn't that great of a magazine anymore. I love to cook, and Gourmet was pretty to look at but I rarely ever found any recipes that I wanted to try. Either the ingredients were too obscure (and I live in a very large metro. area where there are tons of food stores) or too expensive. I hate to say it, but the few recipes I tried usually were not things I would make again (probably had more to do with my cooking skills).

Dear Food Network, Please Stop

I think FN is kind of divided into two groups, the shows that appeal to people who enjoy cooking (an endangered species) and the people who see cooking as a task they have to do. So Ina Garten, Giada and a very few others appeal to people who just love to cook, they don't care how long something takes, etc.. Then the rest of all the junk on the network appeals to people who see cooking as just something to get through with (I'm looking at you Rachel Ray). Or worse yet, cooking is seen as so foreign it becomes a circus act like with all these cake shows. I think that's why people who truly enjoy cooking have gone elsewhere to watch cooking shows like American's Test Kitchen, etc.. It's obvious the people on those shows enjoy cooking.

Summer reading and food: Anyone read these two or suggestions?

I like the Sterns (Jane and Michael) too. They are so unpretentious.

Ever try the recipes on the sides of packages?

I also use the Tollhouse choc. chip cookies recipe, it's probably the best I've found for choc. chip cookies. I also found a recipe for Chicken Pesto Pizza on a package of pizza crusts which is very good.

Cook Yourself Thin

I think alot of this changing recipes around by sneaking vegetables in and substituting applesause for oil, etc. is based on people thinking, "if I cut the fat and calories I can eat tons more of it". I rather just eat a small amount of something with the actual fat in it than eat stuff that has been watered down in the name of a diet. I guess I'm more quality over quantity.
