A Full Dimensional Sandwich: Detroit's 3-D Special Sandwich

I don't think party stores are a Michigan thing. I suspect it's just the name "party store" that is a Michigan thing. It's just a small, typically corner store with snacks, liquor, cigarettes, newspapers, and generally a half-hearted attempt at an aisle with some basic toiletries and grocery items. It's basically a 7-11 with liquor. I grew up with a party store down on the corner, and I used to ride my bike down there to get the Free Press every day in the summer so I could follow all the Tigers news.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 12: 'Top Chef,' Not 'Top Pussy'

I'm with you on Carla and Fabio. Carla has really grown on me over the past few episodes, and Fabio's always been one of my favorites just because he's so damn entertaining. I'd be very happy for either of them to win. As much as I really hate Stefan, though, I can't deny that he seems to be extremely talented. If he wins, I won't be surprised.

Honestly, the Dark Chocolate Azteca Cupcakes from Kat at A Good Appetite that I made last week. My husband and I both flipped over these things, and neither of us are really cupcake people (and, in fact, he doesn't really have much of a sweet tooth). Just from looking at the recipe, I figured they'd be good, but I had no idea just how good they were going to be. I've already committed to naming all my children after Kat!

I wish I had a sexier answer, but hey... sometimes the best things come in homemade packages.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 9: 'It Amused My Bouche'

I think at this point, I'm pulling for Fabio, just for sheer entertainment value. This season seems pretty dismal, frankly. This is the first season where I've really thought, dang, I don't think any one of these people deserve to win. At least Fabio makes me laugh. If I were betting, though, I'd put my money on Stefan. And that makes me very sad.

This may seem boring, but my favorite really is fresh-baked bread, dipped into good quality olive oil, with a sprinkling of black pepper. It just doesn't get any better than that!

Weekend Book Giveaway: 'American Cheeses'

We were pretty poor growing up in northern Michigan. In my world, there were exactly two types of cheese: government cheese and Pinconning cheese. I never understood how special Pinconning cheeses (or any artisanal cheeses) were until I left home to go to college in Chicago. I just thought that was, you know... cheese. And you either ate the big block of nuclear orange government cheese, or you ate the stuff from over in Pinconning. They make good cows in Michigan.

Back in May, my new husband and I actually structured part of our honeymoon around this place. Yes, that's right. We went to Snook, TX for our honeymoon, just so we could eat Chicken Fried Bacon. And, yes, it was worth it.

Hate to be picky but Roseville is not Detroit. I guess party stores existed in the suburbs too.

I had no idea that it wasn't called a party store everywhere---but then where I've lived outside of the Detroit area there really aren't that many independents. I think the difference is that in Michigan you can pretty much sell beer, liquor, chips whatever you need for a basic low-end party---but as a kid the candy aisles could not be beat. The liquor laws in other states I've been tend to limit stores mostly to liquor and not food so you don't really get party stores per se.

i enjoyed this season. as i see it, the name is 'top chef'. so really isnt it the whole package. the best food, the best host, the best 'can do' whatever is put before them....... as so many my feelings, opinions...how the chefs conducted themselves sure made me pick and choose. but as the final days are here. and having the top four..BOY. I WISH I COULD TASTE WHAT IS BEING SERVED!!! i do hope the most deserving wins. (but i do have my fav's and i do love the judges)

A chocolate mousse with shaved chocolate swirls in a small Parisian brasserie. The mousse was the most delicious thing I've ever tasted, and that was definitely helped by the fact that it was my first night in Paris.

I went to the Borders book store and wrote down this recipe for 'That Chocolate Cake' from the book and its the most simple yet decadent cake me and my family ever had. I made it for my father's 75th birthday!!!

I would really really love to have a copy of the 'Essence of Chocolate' book as I need not write down recipes sitting in the book store anymore :)

When I was in high school my Mom worked in the cafeteria and her best freind was the baker. She made the BEST brownies I've ever had. My Mom got the recipe and I still make them for my son today. They're still the best brownies I've ever had.

Some really decadent brownies I received for Christmas one year that my sister ordered somewhere online. I can't remember right off the top of my head where they came from, but chocolate lover that I am, I wouldn't spend that much on me myself!

standing in the kitchen, age 8, licking brownie batter off my fingers from the ancient metal saucepan my mom always mixed them in. she had just showed me how to make them, and i was anticipating 30 minutes of cooking time agony before i could taste them.

it was almost as good as the finished brownies- dark, rich, gooey and addictive. that was over 20 years ago, and i've been making them ever since.

I have celiac disease and must follow a strict gluten free diet. When dining out desserts are the biggest challenge and often means having coffee and dessert at home. I recently went to a restaurant for a family celebration and much to my surprise the dessert menu listed a flourless chocolate brownie AND the menu clearly declared the gluten free status of each component! I checked with the wait staff and after a few questions, I was satisfied that they followed all the "rules'.

When the dessert arrived, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The warm rich chocolate brownie was topped with freshly whipped cream and a warm raspberry reduction syrup; with the first bite I was "lost". It was a soul satisfying indulgence.
