Why Don't More Farmers' Markets Accept Food Stamps?
Facilitating SNAP and LINK usage at farmers markets is a great way to help fight a rising tide of health issues in lower income communities, especially those communities with little access to traditional sources of fresh food, so-called food desserts. (Without access to grocery stores selling fresh food, residents rely on convenience food stores for major grocery purchases.) The good news in Illinois is that Governor Quinn recently signed legislation requiring all farmers markets in the state to accept EBT/Link cards. Additionally, agencies like Wholesome Wave, Experimental Station and Fresh Taste are working on programs to offer double value coupons for Link users at some farmers markets. Last year, Chicago’s Link program was the most successful in the US. The 3 agencies listed above are working to duplicate this success throughout the state and to provide long-lasting health benefits for lower income communities.
