Dinner Tonight: Pasta with Zucchini and Beaten Egg Yolk

Rumor has it that deep frying at high temperatures doesn't cause food to absorb any more oil than sauteing. Hopefully this is true, so I can not feel guilty about make this as written :).

Vino e Tarallucci (north side of 18th, between Broadway and 5th) has them sometimes, and on the occasions I've had them they've been quite good.

FYI... Mama's Mudsliders CLOSED on Dec 7, 2008.

We marked it down for a beignet fix during our trip to NYC from England after reading this post.

But were sad to see the note in the window saying that had closed the day before. All the neighbours said they had great beignets.

Let's hope 'Mama' starts up again!

I made this tonight and everyone in my family loved it! very creamy and satisfying. Next time i'll add some sauteed mushrooms and sundried tomatoes to punch up the taste even more.

Beignets in New York City?

My husband and I enjoyed beignets from a few different shops while in New Orleans. We did the Cafe du Monde thing and then we hit a couple of other coffee & beignet shops and thought the little coffee shops sometimes made a better product. Anyway, we did the tourist thing and we bought two boxes of Cafe du Monde's beignet mix. We were pretty disappointed with the end result. So I googled beignet recipes and found two totally different recipes that produced very good results. One recipe was yeast based, the other was very buttery and eggy, both were delicious. I do not recommend the box mix, make your own, it's cheaper and tastier.

stan's place in boerum hill def does a decent beignet. I second(third?) the Modern/bar room also for them too!

I agree with Kathryn that the best beignets can be found at The Bar Room. If you want some Italian doughnuts Abboccato has fantastic bomboloni made from chocolate and filled with nutella.

Haven't been there, but Stan's Place on Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn has them:

YOU MUST GO TO THIS PLACE:

Mama Mudsliders, at 120 Christopher St in the West Village. Really delicious, and a few flavored options. Really great.

Also, the Dean and Deluca on Madison and 85th definitely stocks the Cafe du Monde beignet mix.

They are actually a cinch to make, if you're in a bind and having a craving. It's just choux pastry, fried, and tossed with sugar. Here's my recipe for
Beignets with Lavender Sugar and Apricot Glaze, but powdered sugar will usually sort you out. Enjoy!

If you're ever in Brooklyn, I know NoNo (North of New Orleans) in Park Slope has them. Never partaken, but their lunch fare is tasty.

Ha-ha! I mock you all for not living in New Orleans, where you can get hot fresh beignets just about any time you please!
(Just kidding. But really, I'm just so happy to be back and that the hurricane didn't destroy my city.)

The Bar Room at the Modern. They're great and come with dipping sauces: maple ice cream, mango marmalade, caramel. Piping hot and tucked into a white napkin. We'll get two orders for the table when we eat there.

Prune and Cookshop also have them for brunch. Little Owl has them too for dinner but we didn't partake after the table next to us complained of undercooked dough.

I know F&B, the fancy euro hot dog place on 23rd b/w 7th & 8th offers beignets but I'm not sure I know what an awesome one tastes like. (BTW, I think F&B stands for Frites & Beignets so at least they think they do a pretty good one).
