My favorite mug is one I got at Starbucks (go-figure) when I was an undergrad. I'm pretty sure I can fit my fist in it--it's great for soup or tea or ice cream ;) My favorite glasses are a set of hand-blown stemless wine glasses. They easily hold 16oz each. Great for a bad day...or (more likely) sipping on some good old h20. Gosh, I'm boring!

Cook the Book: 'My Bread'

Best bread ever--Marilyn O'Reilly's Irish Soda Bread. It's perfect.

Worst Bread Experience Ever--Baking honey wheat in the crockpot. Burned on the outside & soggy on the inside. I'm not used to bad smells coming from the crockpot. It blew my mind. :(

Cook the Book: 'Forgotten Skills of Cooking'

I made Irish soda bread with cranberries (instead of raisins) and pears poached in some amazing SCOTCH whisky ;)

@tankwatkins--lol!

The Crisper Whisperer: Zucchini and Corn Fritters Rule the World. For Reals

AMAZING RECIPE! I love these fritters I made them sans cilantro (i'm not a fan) and substituted some garlic for the onion (missed it in the store) but they were wonderful! The salted zucchini with the sweet corn and a healthy dollop of some Fage yogurt sent me to heaven! Thanks for sharing,

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 81: A Frank Chat with Frank Bruni on Being 'Born Round'

@gwenkern-->I love that you introduced the idea of binges based on caloric value rather than food quantity. Thinking about the idea of binging (at least in a dieter's world), every high-calorie food (that I LOVE to make) comes to mind. What torture! (Plus, reflecting on the idea of a binge based on food quantity, I'm left with an image of a mixing bowl filled with iceberg--all set up for a salad binge!)

@Lorena--My thoughts EXACTLY! Like you said, indulging with little indiscretions is a much better idea. On the other hand, I think that a binge (especially for a dieter) is an awful idea. On a diet now myself, I think about those days when I'm one grain of rice away from losing my willpower...and I can't imagine I'd be able to regain any control after even a scheduled binge.

@Shr1mpch1p--Ahh, I know that ab pain! Some-days I feel my super-sore abs and walk right out of the kitchen!

Cook the Book: Eugenia Bone's 'Well-Preserved'

Tomatoes, sweet pickles, and raspberries!!! I'm all for canning tomatoes especially because my parents are on a low-sodium diet and store-bought canned tomatoes (like most processed food) have so much more calcium than home-preserved. Plus, the whole canning process is a lovely exercise in nostalgia.

How To Save Money at Supermarkets

@hmw0029--I'm super-jealous of your 10 off 50 Thursdays!

I'm a grad student, so I appreciate all of these (common sense) tips! I regularly spend about $50 a week on groceries and I make good food! I cook everyday and bake something wonderful at least once a week. I attribute my savings to a combination of shopping the ads, (planning meals around the sale items,) and actively eliminating foods with excessive additives (i.e. anything with MSG or high fructose corn syrup on the label, too much salt, or just too many preservatives--like boxed cake-mix...oh, the horror). The resulting combination of fresh foods somehow comes out cheaper (read: $50-60 less) and of course I'm healthier for it.
Also, (I'm surprised no one has mentioned this) just using all of the food purchased every week (not letting fruit spoil and eating leftovers) seems to be the most painless trick to saving some green.
