Dinner Tonight: Black Bean Soup with Fried Egg
Ooh I made this last night for dinner and it is so great. Poached the eggs in the soup as someone above suggested. Husband thought egg in soup was a weird idea, but loved it! Two thumbs up!

Meet & Eat: Sloane Miller, Allergic Girl
Thank you so much to Sloane and the important work she has done here in the city, and beyond. I have attended two of her "Worry Free Dinner" events, and had a great time connecting with other food allergy sufferers. As the first commenter on this story proves, NY can be a very unfriendly place for people with food allergies, and it is great to have a network of people that truly understand what I go through every day. Can't wait to attend another meeting!

I love his recipe for making your own mustard. Boy is it spicy and the easiest thing EVER. Giving away mustard to everyone I know for Christmas this year.
Mexican Candy
I love the goat milk caramels called Obleas...I think. So decadent!
Thanksgiving beers for the Miller High Life family?
pyramid apricot seems to be a hit with my non-beer loving fam members, and it would go nicely with ham...
Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?
Yes...in Colorado we definitely dip our pizza in ranch, and honey for the crusts...YUM!

yogurt pie...sounds gross...but is AWESOME!
Gross Out Food Moment
Oh...this is really almost too much for me to even write, but when I was little I was being babysat by my aunt. Looking back on the situation I realize she must have been fairly young...and naive. She cooked us lipton's instant noodle soup and there was clearly the skeletons from a million little insects in it. I didn't say anything until we finished eating and when I did she said "I thought it was supposed to be like that, I never made that before". I really can't believe I was so meek as a child as to eat a steaming bowl of insect parts and noodles. Lord how times have changed for this opinionated NYer!
Cook the Book: 'Eat Me: The Food and Philosophy of Kenny Shopsin'
I don't think I ever invented anything as exciting and groundbreaking as macaroni and cheese pancakes...maybe I need this book as inspiration!
What is your worst cooking disaster hosting a dinner party?
My worst was actually a Thanksgiving where I discovered too late that my roasting pan wouldn't fit in the oven. I bent the crap out of it, and crammed it in there. Everything seemed to be going fine until...BAM...the rack fell to the bottom of the oven because the pan and turkey was too heavy. This splashed turkey grease all over the inside of the oven and effectively smoked out all of our guests. I opened the oven, put the rack back up, put the turkey back on it and sure enough...BAM...it fell again...and again...and again. All throughout the cooking process of that damned bird it crashed to the bottom of the oven about every 10 minutes or so. Turned out to be pretty tasty, and my guests were very kind, but it truly was a complete disaster nightmare beyond compare. I haven't hosted a Thanksgiving since!!!
Must Have From Trader Joes?
The most important thing I buy at TJ's is the completely nut free dark chocolate bars. Not sure what the brand is, but I usually can't eat chocolate since I am allergic to tree nuts and peanuts, and this stuff is GOOD. It's got a silver wrapper...look for it.
Also...
Cheese and green chile tamales
Coffee (watch out though, some of them have nut warning labels)
String cheese
Cheese and horseradish dip
Green tea yogurt
Those awesome guacamole kits
Diet Hansens ginger ale
Citrus shower stuff
Pizza dough
Fruit leather
Pita chips
Sesame pretzels
In Videos: The Off-the-Menu McDonald's Brunch Sandwich
Boy they sure showed McDonalds...right before they keeled over from a heart attack!

le sigh...what a fox. He can fix me burgers any day of the week.
Colorado Eats
Frasca in Boulder is one of the most famous restaurants around and is totally recommended for a special night...perfect for a honeymoon. Other than that in Denver she might like having margaritas and mexican at the Rio Grande in LODO (that's downtown Denver), it's a great starting off point for a night on the town but watch out, the margs will get you!!!
For Colorado style pizza (and there is such a thing) she should go to Beau Jo's which is right there on I-70 on her way to Denver from the mountains in an old historical mining town called Idaho Springs. For her information, Coloradoans usually save their crusts and put honey on them to eat for dessert.
If she is into beer, there are tons of breweries with brew pubs around...Breckenridge Brewery, Dillon Dam Brewery, Tommyknocker Brewery and tons (seriously, hundreds) more. Most of these have pretty good food and the beer cannot be beat!
I lived in Colorado for 25 years and am very jealous of your friend. Hope she has a wonderful trip!
The Next Food Network Star - are we watching?
I tried and didn't make it through 5 minutes before starting to fast forward on the DVR. 5 minutes later I was erasing it...it was so bad.

I don't know if beer counts, but I sure like Sixpoint beers...they are kind of a meal in a glass right?
Cook the Book: Lidia's Italy
I bake a macaroni and cheese from Martha Stewart's recipe. I figure if someone isn't impressed by 6 tablespoons of butter and 5 cups of cheese then they aren't worth impressing to begin with!

Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?
I don't put ranch on anything! Gross tasting stuff.
Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?
Amen "omnomnom"! (I'm from Mich, too. Same area)
Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?
I absolutely love ranch on my pizza. Granted, I am a middle-school student (though homeschooled), and got the idea from my (middle school, homeschooled) friends after we started dipping French-Fries in Ranch (that's justified in Mich--here most of the fries are way too greasy or way too dry). We decided to try it on our pizza--and it's great. Only Hidden Valley (tm) works though. Deep dish pizza doesn't need it, fortunately. A group fave for us is cayenne pepper, fresh black pepper, ranch, and tabasco sauce. I agree, if it's good pizza, it doesn't need condiments, but (1) pizza in metro-detroit isn't that good, and (2), it doesn't matter if it needs it--if ya want it, I say put it on unashamedly!
Dinner Tonight: Black Bean Soup with Fried Egg
This is quite possibly one of the best soups ON THE PLANET. Plus; real easy!
Top 10 Awesome Nostalgic Foods We Want Back
I miss the S'mores cookies and Fudgies, the little Kraft chewy candies in a gold wrapper. Does anyone remember the cereal, Double-Dip Crunch? I was like a "frosted" Crispix. Mmmmm!!! Oh, and the Quacker "strawberry" snack/dessert bars that looked like Nutri-Grain but had a little "squiggle" of white "icing" on top. I'm hungry now.
Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?
I have NEVER heard of this culinary habit of ranch dressing on pizza until I read this in the Wash. Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/27/AR2008052700821.html
It just seems like such an incongruous flavor or condiment to add to a pizza.
Do You Put Ranch Dressing on Pizza?
Nothing is better than Ham & Pineapple pizza dipped in Ranch.
I hated pizza until I tried it with ranch. Any type of pizza goes great with ranch really except Mexican style, I usually dip that in sour cream.
Top 10 Awesome Nostalgic Foods We Want Back
This is hysterical - I have been trying to enlighten my fiance on the yumminess of Magic Middle cookies (apparently he was sheltered and never tried them) and he just doesn't get it. I guess if you never tried one, you wouldn't know what you were missing, but still. Also, LOVED Crystal Pepsi!!! Was it really only out for one year? That's surprising - I thought it was fairly popular in my little neck of the woods.
Top 10 Awesome Nostalgic Foods We Want Back
I miss everything on the top ten list with the exception of the C3PO's-never had those. I also miss Planters Cheeseballs and Cheesecurls, and O' Boises (those were by far my favorite potato chip growing up-especially the sour cream and onion).
But I'm super surprised that one of the most amazing foods of the 80's was left off of this list and wasn't named by anyone. I want to know what happened to Red Devil Cheese Puffs. My mom would buy them every year for New Years Eve and we were so excited to take them out of the freezer and bake them-and even if they were burnt they were still good. I really miss those and can't find them anywhere.
As far as fast food restaurants, I was very happy to find a Roy Rogers a couple of years ago (to only have it taken away from me) but all of their food from my childhood all tasted the same right down to the french fries and the pickles in the fixin bar.
Also, I don't know if any one has noticed but the good old "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame bun" (of course I'm referring to the Big Mac), the special sauce is different from when I was a kid-which I kept telling my mom about and she thought I was crazy, but I saw something on food network recently that said McD's lost the special sauce recipe in the 90's and the sauce is different now-so that being said I also miss the original big mac.
Dinner Tonight: Black Bean Soup with Fried Egg
ps - we swear by the "mexene" brand of chili powder.
Dinner Tonight: Black Bean Soup with Fried Egg
we made this yesterday and were really impressed. we used extra onion & garlic and in the end - the soup tasted like a really tasty combination between french onion soup (minus the cheese) and cuban black bean soup. did the egg, lime juice and sour cream but skipped the cilantro.
Dinner Tonight: Black Bean Soup with Fried Egg
putting a poached egg or hard boiled eggs in a chirizo chickpea soup is great too.
I can't wait to try this black bean soup, made some the other night, wasn't too impressed.
thanks.

Gizmosma , totally LOVED Boppers! Would love to see those again. I also remember Fruit Wrinkles and Fruit Bars.
Top 10 Awesome Nostalgic Foods We Want Back
I totally remember Doo Dads. I grew up in Michigan and my father loved that snack. Since moving to Florida 15 years ago I've never seen it again.
I'm also glad to see others that remember Cinnamon Chachos. I loved those and when I explain them to people (to see if they remember them) they look at me like I'm insane.
I didn't realize that Planter's discontinued Cheez Balls. That's a bummer.
sable42, I'm happy to report that here in Florida Little Caesar's has had a huge resurgence thanks to cheap $5 take-away pizzas. Years ago Caesar's started closing up, but in the last year or so they've exploded all over my area, even opening a Drive Thru location! Now all the pizza places in the area are trying to copy them (usually with a bigger $6 pizza) but L.C. is doing business like gangbusters.
Also, if you never had GatorGum don't worry, it was terrible.
