You can only eat one type of cheese for the rest of your life...

My favorite is Brie, so delicious on fruit, crackers, crispy litte toasts, nice and soft and creamy.

thanks so much! I expecially look forward to the hot dog stand but my daughter will definitely love the pizza and burgers. I have the Hancock Tower for drinks on my definitely do list.

Bon Appetit and Gourmet are slated to die?

I have subscribed to BA for many, many years and have given it as a gift to several. I would definitely miss it and hope that they can stay afloat. I think the subscriber price for this magazine is practically free, it comes out to about $1 an issue. You can't beat that and you have something in front of you to keep and read over and over. I have stacks from over the years and go back to them often.

Bobbi's Hummus

Bobbi's Hummus is pretty easy to make. I like the taste but it's very pricey for the amount they give you...and more than a little bit overrated. The product comes packaged in tubs that are about the size of a Marino's water ice...

I've tried this recipe myself, and with a little bit of creativity, have come up with some great recipes of my own....and being able to make three times the amount of hummus for the same price as one of theirs...well, it's an easy decision for me to make.

Mothering.com has a recipe on their website that produces a hummus which tastes exactly like Bobbi's. Hope you all enjoy ;) Imitation is the greatest form of flattery!

Copycat Bobbi's 'My Favorite Hummus' Recipe!!'
Spinoff from the 'tahini-free hummus' thread... I posted this recipe there, but since I was getting to the discussion late, I thought I'd make this its own post. I am so excited to have developed this recipe!! It tastes just like Bobbi's My Favorite Hummus!

1 15 oz can (~1 1/2 c) chickpeas/garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
2 T olive oil
2 T safflower oil
2 T grapeseed oil (or more safflower oil, or any other mild-tasting oil)
6 T water (just over a third of a cup)
1/4 t lemon juice, preferably fresh
3/4 t salt
pepper to taste
2 cloves garlic, add more to taste

Peel and crush the garlic. Let it sit a minute. (Letting garlic 'breathe' a little before cooking enhances ithe bioavailability of its goodness, or so I've read.) Put everything in a food processor. Blend until smooth, and chill thoroughly.

Other options: parsley, cilantro, roasted peppers...even kalamata olive flavor.

Much cheaper than the $4-6 at whole foods!

I'm a cheese freak so picking only one is impossible--but Jarlsberg is a definate favorite....pecorino/locatelli blend or parmagiano/reggiano because I throw that on everything from soups to pastas to salads--

Brie. Triple cream. Preferably goat's milk and Ontarian :-)

Bobbi's Hummus

this is great news!! i absolutely LOVE hummus, altho i prefer my mom's to any store bought that i have tried. a WF is the ONE close grocery store we have on my campus, altho why there is one close to "poor college kids" ill never know. the bf and i love WF and have spent several fun lunch dates there just browsing. I love seeing him act in shock at seeing different kinds of foods and delight in tasting them! (he grew up on microwave dinners and ketchup on everything...)

I haven't found a better brand than Sabra. I love the Greek Olive as well as Extremely Spicy. Sometimes I thin it a bit with EVOO. Tops as a non-dairy dip.

Oh jeez...what a question! There are so many different kinds for so many different purposes...I guess I'd have to pick mozzarella just for its versatility...that means I can still eat pizza, some pasta, and regular string cheese! It's the simple things...:)

I would say either a mozz or a provolone...they seem to be the most versatile across the board IMO.

I would really miss gouda, port salut, sharp cheddars and most definitely parmeggiano-reggiano...ugh, I dont even like thinking about this imagined cheese drought. sounds like a nightmare...

@brooke29 - that would be way too easy!

After reading all these responses I had cheese, crackers and wine for dinner last night. Thank GOD we don't live in a world without cheese!

Parrano. A delicious blend of sharp, sweet, nutty, well-rounded flavors. I love it and use in place of cheddar and parm-reg in things like quiche. Glooorious.

Oh no! My boss is going to loose her mind! All she talks about is Gourmet and Bon Appetite. How else will I get my fix of foodie news and such...oh Seriouseats.com I heard is decent site. And it even has an online community to boot! But, that's just something I heard in the wind...

I make myself Hummus Sandwich - I use whole grain bagguette with tomatoes, sprouts and whole-grain mustard. It's great!!!

You could also make a Hummus Pastelon... great with some almonds on top too.

Chicago, with a teen-ager

well, you're not going to find a hot dog cart or any sort of licensed street vendor in chicago, they're illegal.
in the loop, America's Dog has a good Chicago Style dog, in River North, i'd hit the super-touristy-but-still-turns-out-a-respectable-dog Portillo's. don't you dare order ketchup on it!
i would have also put Hot Doug's (sausage superstore and encased meat emporium) on your list right off the bat, but it didn't strike me as a steak and potatoes kind of place. but have a look at his specials menu anyways.

take a look at the serious eats chicago guide. it's right on the money.

I spread hummus on crackers or a whole wheat bun to go with my dinner salad, but I like the endive idea even better.

Recipes nudged out of chefs at restaurants were always interesting to read, and the travel articles were my favorites. Would that they had a searchable index for all that; maybe that would sell separately. Does the business model have to be print?

I love Gourmet. BA isn't bad, but Gourmet is a better read overall.

I don't use either to cook, so...

I'd be so sad to see Gourmet go under. It's a publication with rare quality.

Well other than the obvious Cheese steak (please try both Jim's and Geno's) you should try Amada, which was already mentioned. Its a little pricey but do the higher level tasting menu, it is worth the money and a truly great meal. Budakan for Asian fusion, it blows away both the NYC and Atlantic city locations. And lastly Capital grille, its your typcial high end steakhouse with more comfort food and a small philly twist. I was in Philly for four years for college and it has really evolved into a foodie city in the past few years. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the city of brotherly love!

P.S .Oh and if you want Italian almost anywhere in south Philly is amazing, but Dante and Luigi's is one of my favorites.

Ok so the best place I've been to out here in Philly is this place called Meme. Order the whole roasted chicken it's amazing!

I nuked my subs to BA and G because I found them to be more about selling expensive watches and yachts than they were about food - and that is my area of interest.

Does it make me sad that yet another American institution (or in this case, two) will bite the dust? You bet your ass. We can all sit around and talk about how the unions ruined the car industry, blah, blah, blah, f*ing blah - but we are missing the big picture. The more products, services and even media we lose, so go our strength and our ability to compete in the global market.

In a nutshell... Failing US businesses = a bad thing.
