Potted Fruit Trees?
gourmetgal, i use the cheap fertilizer sticks every 3 months and get many large lemons from this plant. the fertilizer package will tell you how many to use. (the sticks i'm talking about are the small ones that are about 3 inches long and about half the size if a pencil)
Potted Fruit Trees?
let me add a vote for the meyer lemon, it does produce a type of less bitter lemon and as potboiler said, the flowers have a wonderful aroma. i also have one in a pot and it's done well.
Lost Pantry Items
they are in the washing machine water pump along with hundreds of socks.

brining a turducken?
ooutos, what supermarket has been brining turkeys for more than 50 years?

Cooking for a family who recently lost a member.
my mom and dad died in a car wreck when i was 16, i remember lots of meals but for some reason the sweets, the homeade pies and homeade ice cream seemed to comfort me the most.
Do You Like Mock Foods?
bacon comes from pigs, apples are used in making apple pie, burgers are made with ground beef. (preferably chuck).
Pork Shoulder
i agree with garvey, cook the roast at 225 for 12 hours, i plug it with garlic and cook it fat side up. if you cook it in a crock pot there is no where for the fat to go so it sits in grease.
Cookbook Recommendations Needed
don't bother with all the diet cookbook junk, simply use portion control and have him stop eating when he's full. people become fat as a result of how much they eat not what they eat.
How do you control your food cravings?
easy, i don't keep chocolate in the house.
Awkward Eating
i don't understand any of this message, why are you bothered by what other folks think about you? they probably didn't notice and if they did why in the hell are you worried about it?
Southern Food: What's the wierdest food you have tried?
in zoos all over the world, there is a description of the animal, habitat etc. on the cage, here in south louisiana there's a recipe on the cage.
Will N1H1 flu scare change your dining out habits?
i agree with pooch and some of you need to remember the hysteria that happened with the "bird flu pandemic'. the media is keenly aware that scared folks watch the news and they are going to keep the swine flu issue alive as long as stupid people are staying tuned in.
...Makes me think I've died and gone to heaven
any type of pork in my smoker or boiling shrimp or crawfish with lots of onions, corn, potatoes and mushrooms.
What is your "style" of cooking?
red neck, ain't nuthin better than a dead animal and fire.
What's for Dinner? 08/26
fried boudin balls as an appetizer followed by white beans/shrimp stew with large slabs of toasted garlic french bread. shrimp in south louisiana are the cheapest i've seen in years. just made a 3 hour roundtrip visit to st. bernard parish and bought 40 lbs of 15-20 count shrimp for $2.00 a pound.
Bad Shrimp
have lived in south louisiana for all of my 60 years and eat shrimp at least twice a week but have never used frozen shrimp. emilytaylor is correct about the orange stuff being fat but i'm also unsure about the cottage cheese thing and would not eat it. if you can't return it to the store don't throw it away, spoiled shrimp is one of the greatest fertilizers on earth, your plants will love it.
Who cares what famous people eat?
jeffrey dahmer was famous, did any of these high profile folks ever cook for him?
lunch box lunches for 5 yr. old
jerzeetomato is correct about reagrding the allergy thing, the peanut butter issue is akin to the MSG hysteria a few years ago.
Oysters - Is there a way to reduce the risk of getting sick?
i've harvested shrimp, oysters, crabs and just about anything that dwells in the gulf of mexico and the rivers and bayous of south louisiana, the "R" months go back to the days before refridgeration. if you become ill every time you eat them it ain't the oysters, it's your body.
WWII Homemaking Tips for Conservation
i remember my mom telling me that during the war they grew a victory garden in the medium on her street, i asked her if she was ever worried that someone would steal the vegetables they were growing, her reply was "of course no one would take them, the food doesn't belong to them".
WHAT A CONCEPT.
Collard greens
i never cook collard greens in water, i always use chicken stock or broth.
besides the ham hocks i also crumble up several strips of cooked bacon into, when they're done, put the entire dish into a collander and squeeze as much moisture out as possible, this helps with the sometimes bitter taste. down here you can a 30-90 day jail sentence if you serve greens without cornbread.
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Fried Steak with Cream Gravy
lorenzo, thank you so much for not calling me an "ignorant redneck" because i enjoy chicken fried steak, what a wonderfully forgiving bigot you are.
Any 'yall cooking with lard?
i wouldn't fry chicken in anything else and i've tried using healthier options but it just ain't the same. i also use it to season my cast iron pots.
What are you having for dinner tonight?
wookie, stop that right now, food is good for the brain, body and soul.
What size cast iron dutch oven?
get a 12 inch one, you can cook damn near anything in it except for a large turkey, a smaller may suffice many times but if you need to prepare a larger meal you'll need a 12 inch. to me it's kinda like buying a weapon, a 22 may be ok but a 44 magnum can be used for any defense issue.
Potted Fruit Trees?
Meyer lemons are amazing. The best lemon meringue pie I've ever had was made last winter from lemons from our potted tree. Floral, complex, ethereal, amazing.
I'm eyeing the lemons now, for an encore this winter!
Potted Fruit Trees?
I had a kumquat tree in the living room for about 5 years that bloomed every spring and was covered with edible fruits every winter. As I recall it didn't get a whole lot of light and was pretty low maintenance. Grew to be about five feet tall.

These apple trees are grown for patios and small spaces. But you'll need two varieties to get fruit, unless there are other apple trees nearby that will cross pollinate. They're hardy to zone 4, which should be fine where you live. Check your zone here. And they ripen in September, which is also good. Some fruit trees are hardy, but don't ripen until late October or November - by which time the cold has destroyed the fruit for us northerners! (Granny Smiths, for example.)
Here is some info about growing potted fruit trees. You can also talk to your local cooperative extension. Putting the trees up against the wall of your building will help in the winter. And if it's a south facing wall, that's a big plus! Espaliered fruit trees are grown against south facing walls. (The Sentinel trees I linked you to are basically a single cordon espalier.)
Perhaps wrapping the pot in insulation, like you would use for a hot water heater, might help it through a particularly cold winter.
Potted Fruit Trees?
make sure you get a lemon tree that does not have THORNS... martha stewart gets her fruit trees from LOGEES.
Potted Fruit Trees?
I have a Mexican Lime and Blood Orange in pots on my patio. You can find dwarf trees for most types of fruit. Good luck!
Potted Fruit Trees?
Thanks for the ideas! Even if it doesn't bear fruit, just the nice smell of a lemon tree would be nice!
Potted Fruit Trees?
Thanks Marshmallow and Potboiler, will try going the fertilizer route. I am just always afraid of overdoing it and damaging the plant.
Potted Fruit Trees?
@gourmetgal - I've had a lot more lemons when I fertilize the plant - I use Peace of Mind - it's an organic plant food and comes in a citrus version. Also, I have found that thoroughly watering the plant once a week is the best way to go. Finally, my lemons ripen in January - takes a looooong time. Hope this helps!
Potted Fruit Trees?
To the gourmetgal: From what I've read, citrus plants are heavy feeders--perhaps your plant needs a but of fertilizer (a rhodendron-formulated one should work well, as they both like acidic soil). Or maybe it needs a bigger pot of a root trimming if it's been in the same pot for a few years. (But what do I know? My Meyer Lemon is tiny and hasn't produced any fruit.)
I vote for a bay leaf plant--citrus trees are a bit tricky to coax into fruiting--you'll have wonderful leaves to put in your cooking, all year round.
Potted Fruit Trees?
I also have a Meyer lemon tree in a large pot, which I bring indoors when the temperatures hit around 40 degrees at night. I have had it four years, and although it blooms profusely and smells heavenly, I have not had much luck with it bearing fruit. The first year I got 10 lemons, then five, last year nothing, and right now there's one piddly lemon that's been on it for two months now and staying green. Potboiler and Olddad, can you tell me the secret to actually getting lemons from this thing? When I bring it in, it does stay in a sunroom.
Lost Pantry Items
I actually have boxes in my lower cabinets with a jumble of things. Also some drawers on tracks though, and they help. A cousin has a short hallway off the kitchen that leads to a bathroom, and on either side she has floor to ceiling shelves just a can wide. Beautifully organized because she can see everything. Would love a place I could do this.
how to cook goat
This is an old post but I'll mention my idea .Gonna debone the lower end of the back leg trimming the large fat pockets out and marinate it in a mild marinade of olive oil, s&p wine [ lemon juice optional ] garlic and maybe greek oregano for 2-4 hrs in a zip-lock.Then lay it flat and rub salt, pepper, garlic and a few herbs on the meat . Roll it up and tie it then season the outside with the same mixture as inside NOT SKIMPING ON THE GARLIC INSIDE AND OUT. Sear it in a dutch oven then add onions, potatos, carrots and any other roots I have add veggie broth [lo-salt] and 1cup of wine [white I guess] to about 1/2 to 3/4 to top of meat . Then bring to a simmer and transfer to oven and LOW AND SLOW for about 4-6 hrs. any responses?
Do You Like Mock Foods?
I love processed cheese slices. Do they count as a mock food? :P
Do You Like Mock Foods?
Love turkey pepperoni. turkey bacon doesn't do it for me.
About the only "fake" substitute food that sort of works for me is a guacamole like mix with all the right additions, but using frozen peas instead of avocados. Mostly only because I always have frozen peas on hand.
How do you control your food cravings?
Wow, I can finally post comments.
Anyway, I have to make a plug for the book "Intuitive Eating." The book recommends keeping all the foods you could possibly crave on hand so that when you do have a craving, you can just eat that food and then move on.
It's actually a lot of work to figure out what you really want to eat and then focus on enjoying it. But it does make eating a pleasurable experience, which is new to me.
Another benefit: my pre-pregnancy clothes fit, which saved me a lot of money.
Will N1H1 flu scare change your dining out habits?
Now food sharing is being discouraged and 'Beer Pong' parties, where you pass around the same pitcher, at one college is being forbidden...

Thank you smokey, well said. Enjoy your post.

Pork Shoulder
Thanks @Garvey for the constructive criticism "nonsense". Recipes are like opinions everyone has one that works for them. There are many regional styles and recipes for a dish as simple as pulled pork and while it's great to add your technique to a list of suggestions, discounting someone else's idea as "nonsense" is not a constructive way to encourage open dialogue. While I don't much care about criticism and will continue to post, some SE readers might be turned off and choose not to post again.
Pork Shoulder
My mom used to make a great sauce for pork roast with soy, honey and mustard. Whisk everything till the honey is completely dissolved. All the better if you add a tablespoon of whole grain mustard to give texture to the sauce.
Pork Shoulder
Mustard sauce is the best on pork. It's just a lot of yellow mustard (like the whole 16 oz bottle), make it as sweet as you like with brown sugar, add some worcestershire, liquid smoke, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and black (or white) pepper. Let it simmer for about an hour or so.
Pork Shoulder
My seasoning consists of generous amounts of paprika, ground black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, garlic, apple cider vinegar and even more amount of brown sugar.
I used to rub the seasoning onto the pork shoulder, put the pork in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, then leave it in the fridge overnight. The next day I'd put a layer of sliced onions and chopped garlic on a big sheet of aluminium foil, then put the pork on it skin side up, topped with another layer of onions and garlic, pour the juice from the bowl where the pork was left overnight, close the foil tightly and cook it in the oven at 300F for 4-6 hours (depending on the size of the pork). Now I just throw everything (pork, seasoning, garlic, onion) in a slow cooker with half a cup of thick chicken stock, cook on low setting for a day (overnight + a work day), I think it's much better, more moist and tender, and totally lazier. Uh, I mean easier.
After that I shred the meat AND the fat (well, it's not like I eat it everyday!), reduce the liquid that's formed in the slow cooker until saucy, mix the sauce and the meat, arrange in a dish, throw under a grill until caramelised.
As a matter of fact, I had it for dinner last night! :D
Pork Shoulder
I agree with both Garvey and olddad. May try letting rest ontop of a mirepoix while cooking. Will help make a good gravy.
