Free Tacos at Jack In The Box with Gas Receipt
I made a copycat recipe once of the JIB tacos. Living in NH, no JIB around here and I was having a craving! They came out goooood but yes, will kill you.
What foods are uniquely '80s'?
McDLT
I worked at McDonald's. I still remember the song. It was the 2-sided styrofoam thing. I always wondered why they didn't just do a McBLT instead.
"It keeps the hot side hot, (mmmmm m) and the cool side cool.
Mc D!! LT!!"
Also I worked at Pizza Hut- Priazzos were awesome. It was almost like a stuffed pizza but the dough was thinner. A large one wieghed about 20lb.
Top 10 ingredients I will never have in my kitchen
1. Okra
2. Miracle Whip
3. Whole milk
4. Spam
5. Olive loaf
6. any ketchup but Heinz
7. Plain yellow mustard
8. mango
9. hot cereal (oatmeal, cream of wheat)
10. kale

If you you had a food show on TV what would it be?
I would have my version of Iron Chef America- the secret ingredients would be things like Velveeta, Twinkies, hotdogs, Kraft Mac n Cheese, can of tuna, olive loaf, fishsticks, cream of mushroom soup... the chefs would be an Iron Chef vs regular home cooks who have to cook with this stuff every day...

Your Favorite Restaurant in Manhattan
Union Square Cafe, hands down.
The polenta with gorgonzola and walnuts is AMAZING.
What's your favorite fried food?
The whole belly clams and sea scallops in a nice light cornmeal batter that we have at Newick's in NH during the summer. Calamari also, but it has to be cooked just right and not too much breading.

Bean Bandit is on Union, I think. We used to live nearby. That was the best hole in the wall Mexican. So is Taco Express, for cheap, huge, greasy hangover breakfast burritos. There is only one Marigold. That is where Mr. OC worked when we first moved there as Sous Chef. Prices are a little steep but IMO worth it, especially at dinner.

For the Pike's Peak area- I lived there for 5 years- Mr. Oddcouple is a chef and we made the rounds!
http://www.restauranteur.com/co/cs/showcase.htm
On this list...
The Famous- awesome steak house
Briarhurst- Classics, with a twist
Craftwood- specializes in wild game
Phantom Canyon- more casual, GREAT brewpub right in old downtown Co Springs
Marigold Cafe is not on this list, but is a must if you are in the neighborhood. Lots of reviews if you google it.
Amanda's Fonda between Co Springs and Pike's Peak access road in Manitou is WONDERFUL Mexican with a great outdoor patio, butch watch those margaritas- they are strong!
What foods are uniquely '80s'?
As a former 80s teen, I can make a whole grocery list of treats, goodies, delicacies and delights that first appeared on the food scene or rose to popularity in the 80s.
Diet coke
cherry coke
cherry 7-Up
Snapple beverages
fruit snacks
microwave popcorn
Capri Sun pouched beverages
juice boxes
Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal
sun-dried tomatoes
pasta salad
Nerds candy
Bonkers candy
Blue raspberry flavored items (including Berry Blue Kool-Aid which looked like Windex but was very tasty stuff!)
Frozen yogurt (the sweet, ice-creamy type, not the more acidy stuff you get at places like Pinkberry in today's times)
"Gourmet" jellybeans (like the Jelly Belly brand, made popular by then-head-honcho Reagan)
Stuffed baked potatoes
Fried potato skins
Mozzarella sticks
Dang it, now I have an urge to put on a miniskirt and some flavored lip gloss and munch on some fruit snacks and sip a Capri Sun beverage while listening to "Let's Dance" by David Bowie!
What foods are uniquely '80s'?
To the person missing cherry 7-up they still make it. I get it in Philly all the time.
Having grown up in southern California in the 80's I desperately miss Cactus Cooler. I also loved Monterey Jack Cheese Doritos.
I did a lot of dining at Sizzler in the 80's.

If you you had a food show on TV what would it be?
I wish any of the established shows (i.e. Rachel, Giada, Tyler) would give a "kosher" substitution for the non-kosher ingredients they use. Or I would like to see a show featuring American cuisine that happens to be kosher.
If you you had a food show on TV what would it be?
Okay the idea of having grandmothers in the kitchen is great, as that is exaclty what inspired me to start cooking and baking in the first place.
I have been thinking lately that I would have something like "Oven Love" and spend the time bringing people back to baking, everything from cookies to yeast breads, fancy to simple. I think that people (at least my friends and colleagues) all seem to have this fear of their oven and baking in general and look at my food in awe (things like chocolate chip cookies, nothing that spectacular), when they could easily do the same in their own homes, but instead buy theit baked goods from supermarkets or petrol stations. I just would love to show people how easy it is.
And considering how many things are in even the most basic breads in the supermarket, like HFCS and hydrogenated oils, these would be much simpler. And (here's a little trivia that I learned while living abroad), did you know that there is too much sugar in McDonald's buns to be considered bread in the EU? Funny, I thought.
If you you had a food show on TV what would it be?
Love the ethnic grandma idea. Any chef looking for a few minutes of fame will blurt out recipes but that elusive orancini or pierogi or babka recipe would certainly be a prize - not to mention getting to watch technique (frequently things that don't get written down on those heirloom recipes).
If you you had a food show on TV what would it be?
Maybe a cooking program with kids in which mothers cook w their kids and look up for great recipes that appeal to the "little stomachs". The program should focus also on teaching little kids how to cook. Those beginners will amaze us w their super creations and twice the fun!!!
If you you had a food show on TV what would it be?
I'd probably do a "Best of" or some kind of travelling show where I can eat local specialties.
@oddcouple- That is a pretty good idea!

Ecto coolers!

What foods are uniquely '80s'?
The new chef at the formerly good French restaurant I worked at made, for a special one week, veal scaloppini with an grapefruit avocado sauce.
I left town shortly thereafter.
What foods are uniquely '80s'?
I'd have to agree that a lot of the foods mentioned above predated the '80s by a lot. Even microwave ovens for home use were a '70s thing. My grandmother got an original Radarange when they first came out. She remodeled her kitchen around a built-in model. This was in '73.
I was with her when she saw it demonstrated at an appliance store. It was like magic. The demonstrator put little slices of hot dog on a PAPER plate, covered it with a paper towel and it was sizzling hot in THIRTY SECONDS! Unheard of!
The good news is that the microwave (that is now 35 years old!) still works beautifully. It had to have a broken dial replaced a decade or so ago and the repairman tested it for leaks. It was still leak-free! They sure don't make 'em like they used to.
What foods are uniquely '80s'?
i think is more a function of the writer's age, than the food itself.
i associate many of those items with the 70's. and one or 2 w/ the 60's
What foods are uniquely '80s'?
Salad bars were huge in the '80s. Even Wendy's had one.
What foods are uniquely '80s'?
Okay, how about Costco food. They sell the hot dog or sausage with drink for the same price as they did when they started in 1983 (and I'm sad to say I remember when it started). Better than Ikea prices!
Another item from 1983? Hot Pockets!

I'm making a list for my next visit! I was only there for 3 full days and had my son and parents in tow so I couldn't be as adventurous foodwise as I would have liked.
I saw Good Times and considered stopping for custard but didn't- now I regret it! I saw Jake and Telly's in Old Colorado City but didn't see Adam's in Manitou- is that in what my cousin called the old bathhouse?? I'm also sorry I missed the Omelette Parlor. I definitely need to make another trip!
@oddcouple- my uncle lives on San Miguel (blvd, I think) and Union sounds familiar. My dad had us all over town. He grew up there and every time he goes back he can't believe how much the place changes. I was there 16 years ago but don't remember a blasted thing from my first trip! I love the area and would probably live there if given a chance.

@JohnFred, count me amongst the oldsters... I grew up on Orange Julius and Johnny Carson... and I remember when Tab was pretty much the ONLY diet soda there was... those were the days...
@Leo, sorry, but by my own firsthand memory, tater tots and TV dinners predate the 80s by at least a decade or three...
What foods are uniquely '80s'?
I know that it was mentioned earlier, but as someone who feels truly ancient reading this thread I wanted to offer my own historical perspective. I had my first Orange Julius in 1969 in Seattle. I remember Johnny Carson (feh to those who don't know who Johnny is) mentioning Orange Julius a lot once he moved from NYC to LA. Tab was the dieting woman's drink of choice in the 60s. It was one of the first diet sodas. Bugles are another childhood memory. Even then we recognized the little pockets of grease in each end of the Bugle horns could not be good for anyone.

Thanks Leo1881, I will give it a try.

Weljwm - I remeber Ale 8, I had it in Kentucky for the first time in the 80's. I have found it outside of Kentucky (Southern OH) with in the past 10 years, and then now days it is all over here. It is so refreshing and delicous. You may be able to get it from their website, www.ale8one.com.
Also from the 80's I remember:
Tyson frozen chicken patties
Tater tots
TV Dinners

I was also quite young in the 80s so don't remember much, but does anyone remember "Five Alive"?! The punch/juice? I used to love that stuff! When I was five, I used to prance around and tell my brothers they named it after me "I'm five and I'm alive!"...pathetic, I know.

What foods are uniquely '80s'?
I grew up in the 80s and I do remember all the moms trading quiche recipes and muffin recipes. They had whole cookbooks with nothing but muffins.
