NY Anti-Artisinal Cheese Law
Boy the public servants upstate sure have time on their hands.

I'm happy they are protecting me from freshly cut cheese though.
New York, SF Bay Area, New York Again. I love to cook and eat. Go local
leftover smoked pulled pork with cheese, jalapenos, guac, sour cream, lettuce and tomatos. Yum
Kenji's cheese sauce of course.
Last Sat. at Piper kilt in East chester. Bacon blue is incredible.
Muncan might just be a meat lovers' heaven on earth. It is a bit overwhelming so I appreciate this rundown, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Luckily the workers are very warm and friendly, and always willing to let you try just about anything. My kids surely never leave there hungry (maybe just a little thirsty).
This is why we live in NYC people!!! Astoria is such a wonderfully culturally diverse place.
Looks good, but I would be so sad eating here. Everytime I drive by I mourn the loss of Spicy Mina's. This was her last location. Where oh where did you go????
therevoller is totally right about the early weekend lunch issues. I've resolved that by going for a kofka, while good not as great as the schwarma.
I love this place so much. For $3.50 they have a perfectly resonably sized sandwich. Sure there isn't too much meat, but the garlic sauce has serious kickin and balance the provided by the pickles make me happy. And not bloated like most times.
When I was a kid we had a pig pickin at a north carolina farm I will never forget it and it must have cemented muy love for BBQ
No props for the Wings at Dino BBQ is a major oversight. Grilled and meaty wing perfection.
My favorite wings for superbowl are fried chx wings from my local chinese delivery. I cut them up into bar wings and add my own sauce. I'm telling you, perfect and cheap every time.
Hinomaru is def a good addition to the hood. All their broths are super rich and tasty and the wings are good if a little little. I like their buckets of beer for $20 though I cant remember if it's 5 or six.
The only thing that irks me is that their ramen is equivalent in price to Manhattan ramen shops. There is no way the rent on Ditmars is even close to rents in the Village or midtown so WTF? But I'm still happy Hinomaru opened in my side of Astoria and not another mediocre sushi place (of course they've started serving sushi at Hinomaru too!). Now I just need a Szechuan place and I'll never have to leave.
I know it's late but I just got here. As a native I'm never never in the Times Sq. area. I'm glad I did bc I had a killer bacon cheese burger tonight. Perfectly cooked, and just about right all the way around for the fast food style. $7.50 seemed fair enough and a la frieda straight up cheeseburger for $6 isn't too shabby for anywhere in the 5-boros let alone next to Disney World NYC. I skipped the fries and went with a chopped salad which was huge. Nothing too special but just the roughage I needed.
Minetta Tavern Black Label burger. Pat Lafreida sourced ofcourse
Spatchcocked chicken.
Beautiful pic but how would these patties ever stick together?
Great that this works for us home cooks, but I'm wondering why not just have a metal shop fabricate a sheet for me locally? You found a great manufacturing partner in Stoughton Steel...good luck
This looks so freaking good and coming from you Kenji, I got to try this ASAP.
I wouldn't travel way out of the way, but this sandwich is def worth a detour. And being within delivery distance, Duzan is a reminder of why I live in Astoria. Their Hummus is awesome too.
And I'll extend the reanimation :) Making tomorrow and I'm wondering how I'm going to play with it this time. Perfect cold fall dinner...I can't wait
It's great to see these businesses doing what they can for the community. Plus if the brick and mortar places don't have power it is a great way to clear out the walk ins. The trucks are just lucky they still have gas (I don't).
Shout out to waffle and dinges for making it out to the Rockaways. It's not easy living without power in Manhattan, but the devastation out in the Rockaways is truly just that, devastation. Sweet waffles (or savory) must have been an belly warming pleasure for the folks out there.
This is a great standby weekday recipe. Make it even easier by using a tomatillo salsa instead of all the veg. Now we're talking 15 minutes.
There are certainly some odd rec's on this list. Here's mine:
1-If to eat only one meal in Syracuse you must hit up the Dino. I only with they served the pulled pork Nachos in the NYC branch
2-Alto Cinco on Wescot has killer fish tacos and enchiladas. Some of the items get a bit pricey but the taqueria fare is reasonable and yummy in the Northern Cali sort of way.
2-Erawan first taught me to love Thai food. Far better choice than Little Thai whatever.
3-China Road away from the University area (to the north) has really high quality chinese (cantonese I think).
4-Danzers is a fun and really good German restaurant. Beer, german potato salad and schnitzer all done quite well.
And some good stores too: Samiri's Imported grocery on E. Genesse, Lombardi's Fruit and Imports for Italian goods; Fish and Tails Seafood on Erie for fresh seafood.
All this got me through 3 snowy snowy winters in the 'Cuse...Go Orange!!!
There are so many that could have made the list, but I wish some of the old spots in S. Brooklyn were represented. Brennan and Carrs' has been dishing out wonderfully wet roast beef sandwiches since the 30's. Or Nick's Deli in Gravesend doing their fresh mozz/gravy thing forever. Their gravy is so rich its like a demi-glaze.
This recipe is off the hook. I don't know how much the freezing helps, but I haven't found it that much of a bother. It's so good that I don't want to risk not doing it.
Thanks again Kenji for hooking me up with yet another winner recipe for life!!
Three Astoria entries is surprising but not unwarranted. BZ grill's gyro is one of my favorites sandwich of any kind in the city. Lucky me...they deliver to my place.
I'm surprised that Best Pizza's italian combo didn't make the cut, or Porchetta's porchetta, but there can only be so many winners.
Congrats Adam!!!! I'm sure she'll be holding a slice properly by year 1 :)
This recipe sounds awesome. I cant wait to try it.

nycParkie hasn't favorited a post yet.
I have great memories of the most special occasion dinner with my Grandma at Canlis. I remember it as a very classic restaurant with a beautiful room and view of the Sound. Although traditional, Canlis never felt old fashioned. It's been 10 years since then and I've wondered how they've held up. From these pics it looks like just fine.
