Where to Find the Best Mexican Food in Portland, OR

One of the most common complaints I hear from people is that there isn't any decent Mexican (or even Mexican-American) food to be found in Portland. Well, I'm here to tell you that that's simply not true. There's plenty of good Mexican cooking in Portland, but sometimes you have to look a little farther afield. Here's where to find the best of the best. More

kramer2718, I have to say—I've been to both east side Los Gorditos locations many a time, as it seems everyone I know in Portland can't get enough of that place, and I've just never been impressed. It's not terrible, just laughably inconsistent, especially the burritos. I just don't get the hype, though perhaps I should try a mulita.

And chapter, as happy as I am to see we at least agree about a certain strip-mall monstrosity, I'm not sure where in my post I mentioned authenticity as being a qualification for this list. In fact, I think I made pretty clear that Robo Taco doesn't claim much in the way of authenticity. "Authentic" is a tricky label that involves a lot of assumptions, as I'm sure you're aware—there's an argument to be made that it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the people making the food, but rather the ingredients and techniques. It seems from your quip about the music tastes of Angel's employees that you've got your own set of assumptions about authenticity. You're right, though—there is a ton of good Mexican food in Cully.

Chrognac, I used to hit up Taco Lindo all the time when I lived closer—I've never been blown away by their meats, though the carnitas isn't shabby, but their handmade tortillas are great. Their burritos used to be about the size of my forearm, though I haven't had one in a while.

And definitely agreed about Tortalandia, asterik! They were on the shortlist for this guide, and authentic or not, I find myself there pretty often. Granted, it's about a five minute walk from my house, so that probably has something to do with it. Really wish they used actual telera rolls for their tortas though.

I'm kinda with you, asterik. An Xuyen is my neighborhood banh mi joint too (Foster-Powell rules) and it's pretty hard to justify a visit to DD for a sandwich. Those fries though....*drool*

Chicken: good catch, although I kind of like your version better. I pride myself in having pretty adverse effects on all the food I eat (no patented acids, though).

Adam: equally good catch, but in this case, no typo—just forgot to sub out the stock sentence in my copied-and-pasted html for the one I'd written. Distracted by hunger pangs, I'd reckon. All fixed!
