my mom's charro beans, red pork tamales, spanish rice, a simple tossed salad, green chile chicken enchiladas, hatch green chile rellenos, tostadas compuestas, chunky guacamole, that salsa my uncle makes with the shrimp & avocado, all the salsas my family makes for that matter, some panicitos, a little herra dura, some bohemia beer...

Buffalo mozzarella in a caprese salad, Sage cheddar in sandwiches, Limburger on occasion! Almost any cheese, really.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: A Year of Chocolate

Milk chocolate reminds me of childhood & halloween- always a good mood booster, but dark is so much more complex of a flavor- so much more decadent... hmmm... I'm going to have to say both. One in each cheek, sometimes!

What's your favorite way to use Thanksgiving leftovers?

I know this is a little late, but, turkey salad in my family goes like this: Mix chunked romaine lettuce, seeded tomato, red onion, avocado, mayo and a splash of lemon juice in with the turkey bits. Salt & pepper to taste. Serve in fried flour tortilla bowls.

Geez... Pozole is usually made with pork roast, sometimes chicken.

MENUDO is made with tripe.

Sorry about the mistake. I love them both! :c)

I was born & raised in Southern New Mexico, so much of the offal I've had has been typical of the hispanic culture. I grew up eating tongue/lengua "sandwhiches" (lonches), fried chicken gizzards dusted with chile powder & scrambled egg and cow brain burritos with my Grandfather. My favorite, though, would have to be pozole. It's a kind of soup made with hominy and tripe. We eat it with New Mexican red chile sauce, diced onions, lime & oregano. My mouth waters just thinking about it.

Houston's Doesn't Suck: What's Your Favorite Slightly Fancy Chain Restaurant?

Maggiano's Little Italy would have to be my favorite. Their appetizers are deliciously and carefully prepared, so ordering their Bombalina Platter (i.e. sampler) is wonderful. It has stuffed mushrooms, zucchini fritte, bruschetta, crispy onions & a spniach artichoke al forno w/ foccacia. Yum! I also love their (seasonal) butternut squash ravioli, but if I can't get that, the lobster ravioli is perfect too. A steak & gorgonzola salad later and I can't even look at the dessert menu. Somone will have to let me know! :c)

Houston's Doesn't Suck: What's Your Favorite Slightly Fancy Chain Restaurant?

Hi Ed. I just found this post while trolling the web for Houston's Key Lime Pie recipe/ingredients. I waited tables in the Rockville, MD Houston's from 1993-1995. Having seen Houston's and more than a dozen independently-owned restaurants from the waiter's side of the table, I agree with everyone's positive comments about Houston's. It's one of my go-to spots when I want to treat myself (and I live in Manhattan).

Although more personal non-chain restaurants are great, only Houston's made me memorize each ingredient in every dish before letting me serve a customer. We had line-up every night where we were quizzed on the number of ounces in the coho salmon and the marinade for the Houston's Hawaiin ribeye. I learned how to give 110% to a job and what to expect as a guest in a restaurant.

I love Houston's. Plain and Simple. It's never disappointed and If I was forced to choose a place for my last meal, this would be it. Want to know why?

If I knew it was my last meal I would like to have prime rib, baked potato with sour cream, sauted vegetables and chocolate. Chocolate for sure. Having your family around will make it taste even better. Thanks for the contest.

I'd want my best friends around, and we'd eat steak. Really really good steak. Prime rib or delmonico with a red wine and beef reduction. A delicious spinach salad. Some interesting fruity dessert, like the orange cardamom roasted pineapple we had at Solo. Yum.

My last supper would have to involve my dearest family and friends. Also, because I've been doing the low carb thing, I would have to have all of the starches, pastas, fruits, breads, and desserts possible. Lasagna... spaghetti.... brownies.... fresh baked bread with honey... potatoes.... strawberries.... yum.

I went to a special dinner where all that was served were "last meals." Mine would probably be all dessert - banana cream pie, lemon bars, chocolate eclairs and varied italian pastries.
