I agree with eddie.
St. Patty's Day Eats: What are you making?
@Embackus: Uhhh...St. Patty's Day is an American holiday? Have you ever been to Ireland on St. Patty's Day? It's also a BIT of an Irish holiday.
Dinner Tonight: Moroccan Carrot Salad
How you gonna eat a carrot salad for DINNER?!

Punch Neapolitan Pizza deserves a post dedicated to it on here. Someone make that happen.

Serious Eats City Guide: Chicago
@banks: Haha I know a whole hell of a lot of Chicagoans under 30 who don't use the term "stuffed". I'd actually go so far as to say I don't know ANY Chicagoans under 30 who DO use the term "stuffed". "Deep dish" is Chicago, plain and simple.
Come on in 'The Kitchn'
Is everyone just refusing to touch this one?!
Okay...I won't either then.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
thatgrrl and elderberry_crunch: You can find "coney dogs" many places in MN, although elderberry, you're correct in saying that most people around here tend to think of them as "chili dogs".
Btw...a Sonic just opened on White Bear Ave. in St. Paul.
Beer Cola-Can Chicken
Flat out, my favorite way to cook a chicken. I switch up the rub and contents of the can every time I make this, and have yet to be anything but absolutely awed how good it turns out every single time.
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
UGH. You don't go to the Nite N Gale for pizza!!! Butt Steak. Fish broiled to perfection, great bread and bread sticks. Good Italian dishes too but Del Rio across the tracks is a better choice. Not to mention Bertucci's.
Standing Room Only: Budacki's Drive-In
After resisting the urge for a few days, I stopped by Budacki's tonight and tried to get info on the sauce. Bad news: I could not get them to tell me what the sauce was made out of. Good news: I got some info. The mild sauce is straight buffalo sauce. The spicy sauce is a combination of the buffalo sauce and the mystery sauce. The suicide is the spicy sauce with jalepenos.
I'd be surprised if the mystery sauce is straight samal oelek as the flavor seems to be more complex than a combination of buffalo and straight chilis. The company that makes sriracha also makes a chili garlic sauce that looks pretty similar to the sauce at Budacki's.
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
There are some hybrid pizzas that work: a buffalo chicken pizza and a philly cheese steak pizza can be delicious if done correctly.
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
Ah, I thought of an exception. I used to like the Thai chicken pizza from Schlotzsky's, but then they cut way back on how spicy it was, and then they discontinued it altogether. :-(
So... maybe I've just been unlucky, but in my personal experience, most of the time these hybrid pizzas fall into some sort of food uncanny valley where they're not necessarily disgusting or anything, but are still inferior to either of their "parents".
But hey, I might try one again someday, as long as you're buying! :-)
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
Hey, shouldnt this be on AHT too?
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
They obviously took the meaning of "cheeseburger" too damn literally.
It is deplorable to even THINK about putting mustard and ketchup on a pizza, let alone pickles! This looks disgusting and probably tastes even worse.
Who wants to eat this crap?? They should stick to the basics: beef, cheese, (maybe more cheese), and onions.
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
I tried the cheeseburger pizza at California Pizza kitchen. It didn't have ketchup, mustard or pickles, but it did get topped with lettuce, tomato and avocado. I liked it. [/ducks]
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
@lkrier: The burrito pizza looks really good. Fewer pickles definitely would have been an improvement. I think an ideal cheeseburger pizza would also have some onion and another cheese in addition to mozzarella. The pickles were just way too strong of a flavor.
@hmlicata: The purpose of the trip was to try the cheeseburger pizza so Buffo's was not what I was looking for. I'll make it to Buffo's eventually.
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
Seriously? You schlepped all the way up to Highwood, and you had pizza at Nite 'N Gale, when you could have eaten at Buffo's across the street? Bad call...
And if you're looking for classic Italian American food in Highwood, you could do a lot better as well. Washington Gardens comes to mind...
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
Somewhere a crust is crying.....
Cheeseburger Pizza at Nite 'N Gale: Too Much Pickle
Yeah, that pic does not look the least bit appealing.
Standing Room Only: Budacki's Drive-In
Have never had the mild there. I'll try to get to Budacki's soon and report back on the sauce questions.
Standing Room Only: Budacki's Drive-In
Agreed on the sambal oelek. Wow, I bet that these are heaven... now I am kicking myself for not having tried them while we lived in Chicago. Oh, boo.
Standing Room Only: Budacki's Drive-In
Yep, that looks like sambal, not Sriracha.
Standing Room Only: Budacki's Drive-In
@Daniel Zemans: Absolutely went with spicy. Would the mild just be the buffalo sauce by itself?
Standing Room Only: Budacki's Drive-In
These wings are addictive. They sell 5 for $5 or 10 for $7. I live 2 blocks away and have been many times. I've managed to limit myself to an order of 5 just once. Just thinking of these incredible wings has me salivating.
Nick, which heat level did you try? I've always gotten spicy. I'm tempted to go for the hotter one, but a bit worried about is as well.
Standing Room Only: Budacki's Drive-In
sdchap00: That might be it! I've been trying to recreate this sauce from scratch and it never ended up right. I couldn't get the recipe from the owners, and sriracha was the only thing I could think of. Thanks for your help. I'll try this combo tonight.
Serious Eats City Guide: Chicago
also you can check out Flo, Toast, and Over Easy... All do a pretty good job. Have fun!
Serious Eats City Guide: Chicago
Gepperths is a wonderful place owned by wonderful people. Agreed.
My favorite breakfast is Lula Cafe up in Lincoln Square- food is great. service can be touch and go, but if you're out for a slow Sunday brunch, no big deal, have a cocktail, it's the weekend :) expect a wait, and don't be surprised by all of the too cool for themselves hipsters.
Lou Mitchell's is just ok- but gives fresh donuts on the weekend as you wait and milk duds to kids
Serious Eats City Guide: Chicago
Wow Mr. Nagrant you really got some stones thrown at you in the comment section. While I have only lived in Chicago for two years I think your review is really exceptional. The mentioning of pequod's, Al's and GEPPERTHS! I think you really got it down, awesome summary!
Please note indigenous Chicagoans there is no mention of LouMalnatis here. Mostly because its not good.
Beer Cola-Can Chicken
What would be the specifics for cooking this in an oven?
Thanks!
Serious Eats City Guide: Chicago
I am looking for a best breakfast place in Chicago . Funkyness encouraged since I am of the Friendly Toast, Portsmouth, NH school.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
I have eaten Hot dogs on 5 continents and almost 1/2 of America, probably about 150 cities in my travels. I would have to say none so far even compare to Rhode Island's, their "Hot Weiner" all the way are the best! They are small mild hot dogs served on a steamed bun with some kind of meat sauce, mustard, onions and celery salt! Addictive...I eat about 6 when I go to RI.
In Rhode Island they also sold hot dogs in the raw at the market under the brand "Saugy's" and these were the best I have ever bought, very mild, made with veal, pork and beef with a snap from the natural casing. I have a friend who ships them to me in Florida. You can also buy the New York System's Weenie Meat Sauce online at www.olneyvillenysystem.com and make them at home. It is easy to make and tastes like the real thing, I use the Saugy's brand with this meat sauce and I think it might even be better! You make them in this order..place dog in fresh steamed bun, a generous amount of plain yellow mustard, then top with a heaping pile of the meat sauce, then top that with the finely diced onions and shake some celery salt on top. Do not forget the celery salt on top..it's important. You'll Love it!
The Simplicity of a Subway Breakfast
It's shameful but I love the tuna salad sandwiches at Subway/Quiznos... pretty much any place where it was prepared in a vat. It's the only way I like it, actually, I don't care for the fancy version with recognizable tuna in it.
My most guilty fast food pleasure is Taco Bell. It's just so... melty and mind boggling cheap. Two bean burritos, nachos (the ones where you just get a little cup of "cheese"), and a caramel apple empanada. I believe it comes in at under $3. Would have starved to death in grad school without Taco Bell.
The Simplicity of a Subway Breakfast
Fast food or not, I adore Subway's $5 footlongs. I make about 3 meals out of it and enjoy every minute. The BLT is best for me - just enough bacon to be there but not so much junky deli meat to give me heartburn. And I pile it high with veggies. Vegetables people!! What other fast food gives you that??
