@Embackus: Uhhh...St. Patty's Day is an American holiday? Have you ever been to Ireland on St. Patty's Day? It's also a BIT of an Irish holiday.

Serious Eats City Guide: Chicago

@banks: Haha I know a whole hell of a lot of Chicagoans under 30 who don't use the term "stuffed". I'd actually go so far as to say I don't know ANY Chicagoans under 30 who DO use the term "stuffed". "Deep dish" is Chicago, plain and simple.

thatgrrl and elderberry_crunch: You can find "coney dogs" many places in MN, although elderberry, you're correct in saying that most people around here tend to think of them as "chili dogs".

Btw...a Sonic just opened on White Bear Ave. in St. Paul.

Flat out, my favorite way to cook a chicken. I switch up the rub and contents of the can every time I make this, and have yet to be anything but absolutely awed how good it turns out every single time.

Gepperths is a wonderful place owned by wonderful people. Agreed.

My favorite breakfast is Lula Cafe up in Lincoln Square- food is great. service can be touch and go, but if you're out for a slow Sunday brunch, no big deal, have a cocktail, it's the weekend :) expect a wait, and don't be surprised by all of the too cool for themselves hipsters.

Lou Mitchell's is just ok- but gives fresh donuts on the weekend as you wait and milk duds to kids

Wow Mr. Nagrant you really got some stones thrown at you in the comment section. While I have only lived in Chicago for two years I think your review is really exceptional. The mentioning of pequod's, Al's and GEPPERTHS! I think you really got it down, awesome summary!

Please note indigenous Chicagoans there is no mention of LouMalnatis here. Mostly because its not good.

America's Regional Hot Dog Styles

I have eaten Hot dogs on 5 continents and almost 1/2 of America, probably about 150 cities in my travels. I would have to say none so far even compare to Rhode Island's, their "Hot Weiner" all the way are the best! They are small mild hot dogs served on a steamed bun with some kind of meat sauce, mustard, onions and celery salt! Addictive...I eat about 6 when I go to RI.

In Rhode Island they also sold hot dogs in the raw at the market under the brand "Saugy's" and these were the best I have ever bought, very mild, made with veal, pork and beef with a snap from the natural casing. I have a friend who ships them to me in Florida. You can also buy the New York System's Weenie Meat Sauce online at www.olneyvillenysystem.com and make them at home. It is easy to make and tastes like the real thing, I use the Saugy's brand with this meat sauce and I think it might even be better! You make them in this order..place dog in fresh steamed bun, a generous amount of plain yellow mustard, then top with a heaping pile of the meat sauce, then top that with the finely diced onions and shake some celery salt on top. Do not forget the celery salt on top..it's important. You'll Love it!

The Simplicity of a Subway Breakfast

It's shameful but I love the tuna salad sandwiches at Subway/Quiznos... pretty much any place where it was prepared in a vat. It's the only way I like it, actually, I don't care for the fancy version with recognizable tuna in it.

My most guilty fast food pleasure is Taco Bell. It's just so... melty and mind boggling cheap. Two bean burritos, nachos (the ones where you just get a little cup of "cheese"), and a caramel apple empanada. I believe it comes in at under $3. Would have starved to death in grad school without Taco Bell.

The Simplicity of a Subway Breakfast

Fast food or not, I adore Subway's $5 footlongs. I make about 3 meals out of it and enjoy every minute. The BLT is best for me - just enough bacon to be there but not so much junky deli meat to give me heartburn. And I pile it high with veggies. Vegetables people!! What other fast food gives you that??

From Talk

The Simplicity of a Subway Breakfast

OK, I admit to liking Chick-Fil-A. I even like their ads, but only when I am in the mall with my daughter can I eat there. And these days, she likes the salad place--can't recall the name, but for a ton of $$ they make you a salad with whatever you want on it. If you're there anyway...
Finally, even though I am a southerner, I just can't do chicken for breakfast. Ham and bacon, yes. Chicken, no. Do I get penalized three "ya'lls?"

From Talk

The Simplicity of a Subway Breakfast

I have never tasted a breakfast sandwich that can hold a candle to the magnificence of Chick-Fil-A's Chicken, egg, and cheese on a multigrain bagel sandwich.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no need to be embarassed about what you eat. It's no ones business what you like, but I happen to think Subway is the modern version of shit on a shingle.....just sayin ,

I have yet to a see a Subway in my area serve breakfast. This must be a regional thing. Doubt I would partake as well.

You know...that's one part of the cow I have yet to try. Funky looking things, but now I'll have to be on the look out for them at the meat market! I doubt I can miss them! XD

I wonder if mum knows how to prepare them?

@engmcmuffin You know way more than I do technically speaking...coming from a hands-on view, I was raised on a beef farm and yes they use those to "grip" the grass/hay along with their tongues which allows them to bring it into their mouth to chew their cuds.
Fun stuff! Have never eaten cow lips but the tongue is VERY tasty!

They have these in the meat counter at the Asian store I shop in. I always stop and look at them, they really are fascinating. While I'm adventurous in the kitchen, these are too over-the-top-foodie, even for me.

At the latin market near my home they have these for sale quite often. I've always been scared and intrigued. I often thought to myself whilst holding the package, what does one DO with these things. Now I no. Might have to go buy a package and try them myself.

Amazing. Now, I want some. They're pretty gross looking, but I'm sure they're full of lovely connective tissue and tastiness. Anyway they look way more appetising than squeasel.

These guys need to learn how to roll out tortillas and hold a knife, though.

Also if you do a google image search for beef lips there are plenty of actual non-naughty pictures the stuff including the very first one.

No more gross than eating any other dead flesh, if you (over)think about it.
