Question of the Day: What are your hometown favorite eats?
I'm from NYC but I live in Philly now. When I go home, I need to have a real bagel, like from Columbia's or some place good like that and I also need to get to Junior's for some cheesecake.
And since hubby and I went Fordham in the Bronx, we also need to take a stroll down Arthur Ave and eat whatever looks good that day.
Question of the Day: Brown-bag lunch—what's in yours?
Leftover homemade chili with a square of cornbread. Diced fresh pineapple chunks for dessert.
Question of the Day: Any vegetarians out there? Why'd you go meatless?
I was a veg for several years during and after college for health and ecological reasons. Severe anemia during pregnancy was chief among the reasons I went back to meat.
I still worry about the impact meat-consumption has on the environment and my family and I have been cutting back on it again lately. Not out entirely, just reducing.

What one food are you ashamed to admit you like?
Reddi-Whip. Yes, right from the can.

where can I putchase juicy, fatty pork like I remember from the
I've heard good things about Heritage Foods USA., though I have not tried them myself yet.
If you try them, please report back. :)
Famous food quotes ??
Heavenly Father, keep us alive, we've ten for dinner and food for five.
-My grandmother claims that this was the grace said in her home when she was a child. i don't know if it's true but I've never forgotten it!
What to put on which kind of bagel?
Wheat with peanut butter and sliced banana. One of my pregnancy cravings that never went away. Second fave is pumpernickel with veggie cream cheese.
Question of the Day: Which family member of yours is the best cook?
My husband. I'm the best baker, though. We've both surpassed my Mom, who's been taking it easy and letting us serve her, which is fine. She's certainly earned it.
My four-year old has perfected pizza dough though so the future is bright.
What's the deal with whole wheat Krispy Kremes?
Sorry but light and airy doesn't really describe KK to me. Last time I had them, they were like leaden sugar bombs.
Midnight... a sudden need for something sweet (or savoury).
Good bread topped with peanut butter and sliced banana. Chased with ice cold milk. You sleep like a baby after that.
For something sweeter, I reach for Carr's wheat crackers and a dab of Nutella.
whats the one snack you would eat which turns a bad day to good
Homemade chocolate pudding and a couple of graham crackers on the side.
Or, in the summer, a very small cup Rita's vanilla custard from the Rita's Water Ice Company known throughout the Delaware Valley. This stuff is rich so a small is all you really need to brighten your day.
Question of the Day: What's your earliest food-related memory?
Mine first food memory is of my sister and and visiting my grandparents in Belize in the early 80s. I could not have been more than five. Back then, their small village did not have 24-four public electricity so most familes had generators to power them at night which were typically turned off before the family went to sleep.
We had all gone to bed but none of us were tired and my grandfather was actually hungry so he got up, fired up the generator and began making empanadas in the middle of the night. He mixed up the masa harina by hand in nothing flat and was frying them in his big cast-iron pot. Before long, neighbors began showing up to see what was happening because they heard the generator and assumed one of us was sick or hurt
My grandfather (God rest his soul - a more generous man never lived) just reassured them that we were fine, just hungry and handed them all plates of hot empanadas. Best midnight snack EVER.
I remember sitting there in the kitchen in my nightgown, eating empanadas and thinking that I NEVER got to do this kind of thing at home.
The Paupered Chef: Breakfast Bars
I think most people who read labels carefully know that jsut because soemthing is organic that doesn't mean it's the best thing for you and that just because soemthing is not organic doesn't mean you can't eat it. he USDA's organic definition gets more watered down every day.
Personally, I buy Kashi because it's one of the few cereals on the market that actually fill me up for the morning,
Do you grow your own food or know someone who does?
My parents and grandparents live in Belize so they grow just about every delicious tropical fruit there is. Pineapples, bananas, coconuts, papaya, mango...
But my favorite thing they grow is cashew fruit and then they roast the nuts. There is nothing, I repeat nothing, like a fresh roasted cashew nut.
What's your favorite kitchen sound?
The sound a well-baked loaf of homemade bread makes when you thump it. *sigh*
Also, the sound of a pizza peel scraping against the baking stone/oven floor as it takes a hot pizza out of the oven.
The Paupered Chef: Breakfast Bars
Zekks, you're right on about Kashi. I love GoLean regular and the CinnaCrunch varieties. And they're in most regular grocery stores now!
As for non-cereal options, I swear by Eating Well's recipe for multi-grain waffles. I make a big batch and freeze them. Couple of minutes in the toaster over and breakfast is ready They kick Eggo's a$$! They don't even need toppings.
Question of the Day: What food can't you live without?
Good bread, pizza, dark chocolate... oh and smoked gouda cheese.
I was a lacto vegetarian for several years so in a pinch I could do it again but I can't do without the yummies listed above. Life wouldn't be worth living!
Freezer foods for a friend - please help with recipes!
These are all great ideas, guys. My friend loves soup so I may start with that and pasta dish and then maybe add a loaf of a bread that can double as sandwich bread.
And nice tip about the paper plates, ej. I had not thought of dishes but you're so right. I've also been thinking back to when I gave birth to my daughter and I recall that the best food gift someone gave me was a supply of fresh fruit. It was something healthy I could eat on the go, and when nursing the baby.
Best American Seafood City?
Agree with the Seattle suggestions. Also, don't overlook San Diego. It's a stunning city with great restaurants and a great hotels. Plenty of culture and outdoor sports to keep you busy and who can ask for more perfect weather?
Who's your favorite food writer?
Jane and Michael Stern
Andrea Strong
Ed Levine
Question of the Day: Is your sweetheart a "foodie"?
My hubby and I became foodies together. Some of our early dates were 'pizza walks' through NYC using Ed Levine's NY Eats as our guide. We'd hit two or three pizza places per day. Man, the 22-year old metabolism is a wonderful thing.
Now we're in our 30s with a daughter but we cook all the time with her and she's turning into quite the foodie herself. She's already a cheese snob. Grandma tried to give her American and she slid the plate right back.
What's your favorite Chip/Snack and flavor?
Bayless' Frontera tortilla chips with any of his awesome salsas.
Does bobby flay get beaten everytime on throwdown?
I know he won mac and cheese against Delilah here in Philly (Oprah's fave). The city's still in mourning for that.
Storm Food?
After my boss called to tell me to stay home, I made waffles for my husband and daughter. It's their favorite breakfast and I figured it would give hubby lots of nergy for shoveling. :)
Later, since it was still Valentine's Day, he made me chicken parm (my favorite) and I made chocolate mousse for dessert. A delicious snowy day.
Question of the Day: What is your favorite food-related magazine?
Cook's Illustrated by a mile. It's actually about cooking food as opposed to the "lifestyle mags" that have food in the background. I've been getting it for two years now and every recipe I've tried has been a winner. It's also nice not to be bombarded by ads when I read it.
Does bobby flay get beaten everytime on throwdown?
My family and I love the show, I think he allows himself to be beat so often to help those working on growing. Bobby's recipe's are awesome, I haven't made one I don't like; and I make alot of his recipe's, winner or not!!
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
I used to watch a lot of FN back in the early days. I enjoyed Jack McDavid, Mario Batali, Sara Moulton. Now, I never watch FN. The turning point, for me, was when Rachel Ray became a "star" (gag).
Now if I want to learn something about cooking, I tune in PBS, and watch Jacques Pepin, Lidia, or the two ladies on America's Test Kitchen.
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
Least: Ina Garten; from her voice to her food, personality, friends, etc. . .she drives me insane.
Most: Giada Di Laurentiis, I have a girl crush on her.
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
I have to agree with many comments here.I have studied culinary arts for years and these housewife cook wannabees do not know the difference between a good Veloute and a bowl of gravy.
Where does the food netwok find these people?
Sandra Lee gets so excited over her booze, you would think she was an alcoholic! Rachael Ray acts like the host of Sesame Street with her ignorant, goofy, childish sayings. Paula Dean serves so much fat in her food, it is more rich than her fake, overpronounced accent which is comparable to fingernails on a chalkboard.Giada dresses like a street walker and tries to sound italian with her fancy pronouncing og food. What happened to credible culinarians? are all we are left with are women's day readers like these four women who think they are teaching cooking? please!!!
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
My faves: Alton Brown, Anne Burrell, Ina Garten
Likes: Jaime O., Tyler F. Micheal Chirello (sp?)
My not so faves: Ray Ray, Sunny Anderson and the Neeleys...I started out liking Ray but her overexposure did me in...I haven't seen a thing on Sunny's show that I would make, and I can't stand her delivery, and the Neeleys...I like things they make but that lovey dovey crap really turns me off...and of course Sandra goes without saying...
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
My favorite is Ina and my very least favorite is Giada. Can Giada's tops get any lower without this show being rated as porn? I have nothing at all against showing some cleavage, but please...this is a cooking show, and if her cooking isn't good enough to stand on its own, they should take her off the air. Actually, I tried several of her recipes and thought they we just "okay". Her books are loaded with photos of her rather than of the food, and she is way too full of herself. She should stop the annoying Italian accent when she pronounces Italian food items. She was born and raised in California for goodness sakes!
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
I used to watch a lot of FN but honestly it's so overproduced these days I just can't get into it. I understand that they get the best ratings with these lame reality shows and camera-friendly cooks, but can't they appease everyone by having a few shows with hosts passionate about a particular part of cooking? Go ahead, play them at some weird-ass time of day, I'll tape it, but to me it's such a waste of a perfect medium to march out these clowns preparing the same bland recipe over and over and over again.
Favorites (none of these exist anymore): Jamie , Mario, Alton
Least favorites: Aida Whatever, Sunni Whatever
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
I used to watch this channel frequently for info on cooking techniques, and good recipes; not on much anymore. Weekend getaways at $40 and such rot are a waste of time. I have no problem with the dumbed-down shows for the chef-boyardee crowd, but I have the travel channel, with Bourdain, for the other stuff.
Faves: Alton, Mario, Sara
Middling: Sandra, Giada [OK....just eye candy....no turtlenecks needed]. Flay....I like the genre, so I follow his recipes. Emeril....shelf life date gone by......he's now a shill on the "green network".....and, not convincingly so. Paula.....on the fast track to Emeril status.
Least: Ray Ray. Well, Sandra too...although S doesn't annoy me me nearly as much as does RR.
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
Favorite: Ina Garten and Bobby Flay
Least Fave: Sandra Lee (worst), Sunny Anderson, Ellie Krieger, Ann Burell
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
FAVE: jamie oliver -- i LOVE jamie at home. also nigella -- apparently i love brits.
LEAST FAVES: sandra lee, hands down. not even a competition!
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
Favs: Ina Garten, Giada, Alton Brown. Duff Goldman & Mary Alice from Ace of Cakes - do they count?
also sort of Flay because, hey, a good looking guy who can cook? im all for it.
least favs - Paula Deen. something about her annoys the CRAP out of me. Sandra Lee - im in college and even i wouldnt eat some of the disgusting look things she makes
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
Favorites: Paula Dean, her recipes I can make and have. Sandra Lee because her recipes are very doable. Why do so many dislike her? I love to watch her. I also like the fact that with Sandra Lee, you can take common packaged stuff and make something great. Alton Brown, definitely a fav of mine. I can't stand Emeril. His recipes are so complicated, why bother? Ina Garten's recipes are too complicated as well.
Least Favorite: Obviously Rachel Ray is an amature when it comes to cooking. Come on folks, I mean, my teenage son can concoct what she comes up with. Also, she is extremely irritating with all of her hand gestures and her EEVO and her rolling eyes. I deliberately turn off the FN when she is scheduled. I just don't get it. She's awful. BEST: Alton Brown WORST: Rachel Ray
Who's your most/least favorite food personality on Food Channel?
Most: Paula Deen, Alton Brown, and Ina Garten
Least: The Neelys and Sunny Anderson
Question of the Day: Any vegetarians out there? Why'd you go meatless?
i read way too much about the meat industry, was the first thing. if you start to think about what it is you're eating, and how it was raised, and how it got to your plate... yuck. i love reading the pioneer woman's blog, but i can't think too much about how her family earns their living.
then i decided that if i couldn't kill it myself i shouldn't eat it either. it just started to feel wrong. and why should i share my home with an animal, encourage it to sleep in my bed with me, and yet perpetrate such harm and suffering on its brethren by buying commercially raised meat and dairy?
even the politically correct meat sellers at the greenmarket who give their livestock better lives than that in the end have to kill their animals.
and the kosher meat industry! don't get me started. such hypocrisy! they don't treat their animals well, which is one of the whole points of being kosher, and they treat their workers worse.
don't get me wrong, i LOVE meat. i can eat a whole ribeye steak in one sitting and lay waste to a sandwich at carnegie deli all by myself, no problem. it's sad for me to think about everything i'm turning my back on... brisket, chicken matzo ball soup, chopped liver, hangar steak, banh mi, pastrami on rye, boeuf bourgignon, duck gizzards... but i'll survive.
geez, i think i gave the term "serious eater" a whole new twist today!
Question of the Day: Any vegetarians out there? Why'd you go meatless?
@joejoe, in the US, very little of the corn grown is fed to humans directly, since that's usually not sweet corn. Much of it goes for non-food items like biofuel, and a lot goes for HCFS.
And yes, a portion goes for animal feed. But, in a best-case scenario, the cow wouldn't be eating corn, it would be grazing on grass, which is what it evolved to eat. Eating corn is pretty unnatural for a cow.
Cattle can graze where farming is difficult, so it's not an either/or thing. And in fact, at the beginning of their lives, those corn-fed cows are grazing on grass. They're sent to feedlots later.
So if the cow isn't fed any corn, that acre of land could grow crops that humans could eat while the cow grazed elsewhere, and you could have your steak and your potato without any conflict.
Question of the Day: Any vegetarians out there? Why'd you go meatless?
my question is based on logic not the vegan carniviore thing.....
here goes
if an acre of land produces x amount of corn
how many humans will it feed vs. how much a cow eats of it and how many people will the cow feed
What's your favorite Chip/Snack and flavor?
I loooove Jay's brand "Hot Stuff" barbecue potato chips. I pick and choose the ones with the most red dust on them!
Otherwise, gimme pork rinds with Tabasco any day. I prefer the way oversalted, puffy styrofoamy-textured ones, but I'll eat the super crunchy ones as well.
I also like Andy Capp hot fries/cheese fries/pub/fries. They're basically stick-shaped Funyuns with cheese flavoring, yes?
Holy crap I love junk.
What's your favorite Chip/Snack and flavor?
Cheddar and sour cream ruffles are my absolute favourite but I'm not allowed to have them because once I do I need more and more and more. I mostly end up eating Dirty Jalapeno Heat potato chips and Baked Cheetos.
What's your favorite Chip/Snack and flavor?
Okay, I'm changing the topic a little. Maybe it's just an addition. What do y'all like to use as dips? Regular corn chips are gluten-free for me...yay! What are your favorite dips ("normal" or otherwise), for all of these tasty chips
Oh, and I actually enjoy baked Lays...yum!
What to put on which kind of bagel?
Montreal sesame seed bagel, toasted with avocado smushed on top
Cinnamon and raisin bagel, toasted, with crunchy peanut butter
Everything bagel, toasted, with herb and garlic cream cheese
What to put on which kind of bagel?
mmmm....let's see...a toasted cinnamon bagel with peanut butter smeared on top (so it melts slightly because of the warm bagel), a sliced banana, and drizzled with honey. filling, nutritious, and delicious.
What to put on which kind of bagel?
My favorites are a wheat or plain bagel with cream cheese and strawberry jam, a blueberry bagel with cinnamon walnut cream cheese, and an everything bagel with sharp cheddar and a slice of tomato. Mmm! I don't have bagels often, but this is really making me want one!
What to put on which kind of bagel?
Smoked cheddar bagel, toasted, with green olive cream cheese. Pumpernickle, not toasted, with plain cream cheese, lox, capers, red onion and maybe tomato.
What to put on which kind of bagel?
Plain, toasted, lox, capers, cream cheese (hey, I'm from the South; we're a little new to this party), or cinnamon-raisin, toasted, with sharp cheddar.
Of course, the game changes if they're *fresh* (and good) - but the only time that happens in my area is if I've made them. If then, the answer is always: fresh butter. Preferably homemade.
What to put on which kind of bagel?
i like the salt bagel toasted with just the right amount of butter....
but has anyone ever had a bialy????? also good toasted with a lite smear of cream cheese and butter.... also great egg & cheese sandwich.
kossars bialy shop way down the lower east side..... near the donut plant.
