What's not-to-miss in Italy?

Haven't been to Rome but the melon gelato in Venice was so good and I usually only eat chocolate!

I fly Jet Blue often. While not haute cuisine, there are many options. I actually like the fast food they have but that is just me. There is food on both sides of the security check in. More after check in. It is better than many terminals in airports. No major restaurants, though. Nice store for prepackaged sandwiches and wraps and fruit and things. If you buy a little from here and a littl from there, you can put together a decent meal.

and as f9or bagels, whole wheat and pumpernickel are supposed to be okay...minis also work for diabetics. It depends on what meds one is on and what else people eat.

Cupcake Crackdown: Have the Food Police Gone Too Far?

Too bad this is an old thread because the problem has come up again. Why can't they just make smaller, healthier cupcakes and keep the tradition for goodness sake. They have smaller pans and one lousy cupcake and an extra run around the playground should be good enough. It isn't the cupcakes. It is a whole lot of other things.

I find Godiva's dark sugar free chocolate bars to be like reaL chocolate and good. Of course no candy it totally sugar free, but as a diabetic myself, I have read that even with sugar one inch square of 70%+ cocoa (a day) is actually acceptable and recommended. Diabetes Forecast ,not sure which one.) The problem is this candy can only be gotten online or at actual Godiva stores. I stock up. It is helpful to know what medication the person is actually on and how much sugar they can have. But that might be too complicated. Most loose candy shops have decent sugar free including the candy section of FAO Schwartz.

I'm sure I'll get slammed for my taste, but I really, really like Lucy's Asian Kitchen in Terminal 5. It's one of the cheapie fast food options, but everything there is cooked to order and not greasy. Plus, I am Chinese, so that's gotta count for something, right? :)

I was recently stuck in T5 for an eight-hour delay and consoled myself mainly at Piquillo. I didn't eat anything (though everyone else's food looked pretty good), but stuck to their excellent and relatively inexpensive wine list. For comparison: a really big pour of excellent albariño at Piquillo is $9; a glass of revolting Chardonnay at Chili's in O'Hare is also $9.

In florence,

Il Porcuspino (the porcupine) is delicious. We had an amazingly fun time with the waiters, and had the best bread and white bean soup i have ever had.

Also I would recommend the city of Florence in general. You cannot beat the art in this city. Fiesole is a small town up in the hills just outside of Florence, it is gorgeous and I they have this outdoor theater where they do opera and orchestra in the summer.

I am very jealous. Hope you have fun!

I second having gelato every day, especially since you are going during the summer when it's wickedly hot outside and not a lot of places in Rome have air conditioning.

My recs would be Al 34 and Soralella both in Rome. But really it's hard to have a bad meal in Italy.

Scharffen Berger chocolate is pretty good - high cacao % is ok for diabetics in small doses...Scharffen Berger has up to 82% so it's pretty pure also...

They have a store on the Upper West Side - 473 Amsterdam (hope it's still there, I went last fall so not sure) Between 82nd and 83rd
