Good Bread: Storye

I am so excited to hear Latvian bread is being sold in NY--I fell in love with it while in Riga and have not been able to find anything comparable since.

The woman at the market in Riga told me that because it is so dense, bread can last for weeks on a countertop without going bad (not that it would last that long in my house).

How about Hungarian langos? It is traditionally topped with sour cream and grated cheese but sweet toppings are also popular.

They also have a lemon flavor which is perfectly tart and fantastic with blueberries

Vegetarians, How Do You Do Thanksgiving?

Last year was my first vegan thanksgiving. I never really went for the turkey at thanksgiving when I ate meat anyway because frankly, the sides are so much better! As a vegan, you become very accustomed to NOT eating at others homes during big holidays because even if people are trying to be accomodating it is difficult to demand a vegan dish from someone (even if they are family) when they are responsible for a feast for 25 people who have different tastes. It is good to make dishes which can be veganized at the table that way people can customize based on diet.

What strange food combos do you partake in or have you seen?

In the dining halls in college I would see the weirdest combos--salads topped with lucky charms, jello and ranch dressing; multiple glasses of milk with every meal including with mexican, chinese, italian, indian, etc flavors; sandwiches with peanut butter and mustard and various deli meats--It was mainly boys who did these things but I saw the same people consumîng them on a day to day basis so I know it was not just a dare.

Eggplant for Dessert?

I had a load of eggplants that would otherwise go bad and I made sweet eggplant bread--as someone who does not enjoy super sweet things it was excellent
