Guide to Sliders in Northern New Jersey
Maybe you're not making it to Vern's because, according to the awning, it is Fern's.
That said, I love the Hackensack White Manna. Small? Yes. Crowded? Yes. But the service is always nice, the food tasty and freshy, and there's something in that griddle...

Might I briefly add that the Cantaloupe ice from Lemon Ice King of Corona is amazing? Clearly made with fresh melon (evidenced by the occasional seed). My daughter swears by the peanut butter, but I'll chalk that up to being 13.
Obituary: Sal, of Upper West Side Favorite Sal and Carmine's, Dies
How sad.
I've been going here since it was just Sal's and located by Symphony Space. When that one closed, I was relieved to find it re-open right around the corner from where I lived (saving me 5 blocks) as it took over the space from a vain attempt at a slice place from a few neighborhood guys (one of whom went on to start the local video store). Anyway, the place had character -- not in the decor which stayed the same as the neighborhood guys (in case anyone wondered about those posters) -- but in the guys behind the counter. And a slice is always good for four or five glasses of water an hour later.
Sal will certainly be missed. And Carmine...my condolences.

Meet Your Farmers: KayCee Wimbish and Owen O'Connor of Awesome Farm, New York
Kaycee was my daughter's elementary school teacher, and if she's half as good a farmer as she was a teacher, then this is certainly an awesome farm!

Help me remember this breakfast cereal
Quaker Puffed rice or Puffed wheat. Straight out of the cannons. And if anyone else remembers (I think it was to the tune of the 1812 overture), it was:
The only cereal that's popped from guns
Where to buy Abita in NY (preferably Brooklyn)?
I buy it at Fairway all the time. I go to the uptown one, but I'm sure they stock it in Brooklyn too.
Does Lyla's Cafe Creperie Serve the Best Burger in NYC?
Don't mean to be picky here...but has anyone TRIED THIS BURGER? I'd love to know.

Wow, that's awesome that they're doing so well at such a young age. It's nice to read about people doing what they want to do, and not getting stuck in the grind that many of us get stuck in. I bet they don't wake up hating Mondays like so many of us do.

I lived in Hackensack for 20+ years and never stopped into White Manna.
I finally went there while I was back visiting relatives and I could kick myself for all those teenage years of eating at McDonalds across the street. How could I have been so dumb?!?

Great job. I've been trying to visit them all and review them. I recently dropped by the White Mana and the White Diamond in Clark- which stands out because they use poppy seed rolls and lots of pickles. I was surprised at how good the Mana was.
Another MIA joint is the Short Stop in Belleville and Bloomfield. They were similar to the Mana, but not as good. The Bloomfield one is a Dunkin Donuts near the Bloomfield Ave / GSP traffic maze.
I also miss all the little flame broiler burger spots that have disappeared- The Anthony Wayne, the Red Chimney. Not sure if any of those are left in North Jersey. A newcomer is Lil Burgers in Nutley, which makes slider-size flame broiled burgers on potato rolls. Not bad, actually.

I've been eating double-doubles for so long at White Rose in Highland Park, I salivate just by hearing the name White Rose nowadays. So damn good, and I can not figure out how they do it. That taste is so yummy!
I actually never knew the other two were still open, actually. I have to check them out one of these days, but while I am closer to White Manna in Hackensack, I much rather drive to White Rose any day of the week. Then finish it off by going to Thomas Sweet for a Blend-In in New Brunswick!

Great job Nick! What amazing research. I had no idea there were so many 'Whites' in North Jersey. Is someone buying White Diamond?

Love the article. I'm originally from Detroit and they have quite the slider scene, including Hunter House, Greene's and Bates. I moved to LA and found that any time I order a slider, I am given a disappointing mini-hamburger. This is how sliders should be: Greene's

@pastry262: A pilgrimage would be a good idea. I've always despised White Castle burgers (well, when I say always I mean since I first tried one in...'97?), but I visited White Manna a few months back and fell in love. They redeemed sliders in my eyes.

Wow - such a great post, Nick! Your photo work is beautiful.

Thanks, roboppy. Man, these sliders look good. If only more slider-focused places would migrate Westward. I've been to White Castle, but it was a big "meh" for me. Looks like I'm going to have to make a pilgrimage to the East Coast!

@pastry262: Sorry about that; I tried correcting it about 10 min after putting it up so if you reload the page the links should work.
@nachoTaco: Holy crap, thanks for pointing that out; correcting now!

Great job Nick. I've been waiting for an article like this.

I have been eating lemon ices from court st. pastry for 48 years and while it's nice for them to get the fame they deserve. It bothers me cause the window that I used to walk up to is now a five to ten minute wait. BTW Spumoni Gardens isn't called SPUMONI GARDENS for nothing. It's lemon ice is good but the Spumoni is among the best in the world.

Hey! Such great places you have reviewed! But you forgot Cange's Homemade Italian Ice in Staten Island! This tiny homemade italian ice stand cannot be overlook as simply a stand!
It has the most amazing flavors: creamlotta, spumoni, strawberry-banana swirl and an array of other flavors. They are located on: 118 Parkinson Ave., Staten Island, NY
You must visit!!

Where can I get good ices around 38 and Bway?

The best is Enrico's on Morris Park Ave. in the Bronx

Uncle Louie G's other options are big winners. Don't overlook the Cannoli!

Another good place for Italian ices is DeRobertis Patry Shop in the East Village on 1st Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets. The chocolate ice is very rich and satisfying.

I suspect Eroca (who commented above) means Morris Park Avenue in the Bronx -- there isn't a Morris Plains Boulevard in the borough. Maybe you mean Enrico's? There's certainly some fine Italian Ice to be had in the borough, including the ice at DeLillo Pastry Shop on East 187th Street in the Belmont neighborhood (commonly referred to as the Arthur Avenue section of the Bronx). Great stuff.

Two sticky thumbs up for Lemon Ice King of Corona! The lemon is indeed top-notch, and I also swear by the raspberry, which, last time I was there (sadly, quite a while ago) was a black raspberry, with big, juicy fruit chunks in it. (Well, big as far as black raspberries go, of course.)
Does anyone know if the store still sells ices in the large tin cans?
Whenever I would go there I would bring a cooler, stock up on flavors in the biggest size they came in, and have one heck of a summer. (Note: I lived on the Astoria/Woodside border, and driving to 108th St. in the summer? Not the easiest, most pleasant trek -- but definitely worth it.)

What, no Rocco's?
A Tour of NYC Italian Ice
im sorry but is there a problem with a semi frozen tootsie roll?
i love chocolate italian ices...... yum!
A Tour of NYC Italian Ice
Um hellooooo, La Guli in Ditmars! The "trek" to qns would be worth it, for water ice (lemon, spumoni, pom are the best) or delicious gelato.
A Tour of NYC Italian Ice
Also, sorry, but where's Rocco's (Bleecker Street) on this list? It's one of the originals and still one of the best.
A Tour of NYC Italian Ice
I agree with Eroca, you really cannot say you've had a "tour" of italian ice establishments in NYC without going to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. Borderline criminal, if you ask me. And the original Ralph's on Staten Island deserves a shout-out.
