SE Staff Picks: What's Your Favorite Taco Filling?

If a place doesn't have barbacoa de chivo (GOAT!) or lengua, I don't even bother eating there. Chicharron is rare find that I also enjoy. And does fried fish count on this one?

Cook the Book: 'Food Trucks'

The falafel from the guy who used to be on Atlantic Avenue near Clinton in Brooklyn. Disappeared sometime in 2003-2004....

Koreatown Fried Chicken Faceoff: Mad for Chicken and Kyochon

I've never ordered at the counter at Kyochon--only upstairs at the tables where you order from waitstaff. I've NEVER had chicken that was soft and greasy. It's been crispy, practically shellacked (In a good way) and incredibly tasty and the spicy stuff is HOT HOT HOT.

A Sunset Park Taco Crawl

Thanks for this! This might be how I eat Saturday dinner after a late morning dim sum fest a few avenues over. Quick question--I got confused on the last side. Are those 'near perfect' tacos al pastor from Taco Rico or Taco Mix?

Butter Burgers at Kopp's in Greater Milwaukee: A Worthy Precursor to Sensational Custard

Oh, now, I miss Milwaukee. But I'll be back for a visit soon. Milwaukee has NOTHING on NYC for food except for this one true true fact: Shake Shack (while wonderful) is but a mere pretender to the throne of Kopp's. Shake Shack may have a week of flavors that changes monthly, but Kopp's has monthly calendar of its daily-changing flavor, and a billboard on one of the major highways that declares the delicious flavor of the day, resulting in impetuous immediate exits off said highway and changes of plans. "It was the 'turtle sundae' notice that made me do it."

Bedouin Tent. Brooklyn. Inexpensive and delicious enough to be a place I can take for granted.

What's Your Favorite Carrot Cake in New York?

Lloyd's. It was the cake at our wedding rehearsal dinner and it almost rivaled our wedding cake but at a fraction of the cost, as they say.

What's Your Favorite Falafel In New York?

Bedouin Tent is my go-to favorite. There also used to be a really good falafel guy with a cart further down on Atlantic. He disappeared sometime in 2003 or so....hmmm.

What's Your Favorite New York Pizza Pie?

Zero Otto Nove on Arthur Ave. Really. C'mon.

I'd be tempted to vote for Lucali's if it weren't such a major hassle to eat there (and I can walk to it!).

And I always forget how good Grimaldi's is until I eat there.

Cook the Book: 'Japanese Hot Pots'

I was sick this weekend with a cold and made the Filipino Chicken Soup (penicillin) called Tinola. The best thing ever--like traditional chicken soup but with ginger and garlic. How could it not cure a cold?

From Recipes

Cakespy: Brooklyn Basbousa

This is our GO TO place to eat. I practically can't leave this neighborhood because of the falafel here! And I do love the little bit of cake that often comes with the check. I do hope that means I'm a good and welcomed customer...Thank you for the recipe, but I'm pretty sure I can only ever eat it at the restaurant.

Things I Ate in Milwaukee

I grew up in Milwaukee, have lived in Brooklyn for 8 years, and am planning a visit to M'waukee and my brother there in a few weeks. Where will I go:

Cempazuchi: Truly terrific slightly upscale Mexican food. Where I first learned to love fish tacos and where the salsas are strangely addictive.

Kopp's: I'm sorry--you're just wrong about Shake Shack--Kopp's frozen custard is supreme. Well, at least in my humble opinion.

Cafe Hollander: A relatively new place my bro introduced me to with a dish I sometimes long for: a Guinness Stout-laced waffle covered with corned beef, Yukon gold potato hash, poached eggs and horseradish cream sauce. O mah gawd.

Sprecher Brewing Company: And have you been to the Sprecher Brewery for its tour and end-of-tour beer tasting madness? Its microbrews? And its absolutely perfect Root Beer?

And then there's Kringle. And thanks for the Maria's Pizza recommendation--I'm there!
