Hanci Turkish Cuisine, a Much Needed Turkish Restaurant in New York
I love Peri Ela on Lexington between 90/91st. It's a beautiful, intimate space and the food is delicious.
Best Brisket in NYC?
I haven't tried this recipe: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2007/06/brisket_baby/.
But her lasagna was unbelievably delicious, for what it's worth. Good luck!
I need me some bacon!
I'm told that when I was a youngster of 5 or so, I proposed a combination of my two favorite foods as a breakfast option, asking my mother for a bacon and spaghetti sandwich. I can't imagine why this request was not fulfilled!

Know Any Restaurant or Bar with Homemade Sodas?
Bubby's makes their own soda; was at the Tribeca location this past Friday. I'm not a soda drinker, but the Coke-fiend boyfriend, who was initially skeptical of homemade cola, was very, very happy. It's made with cane sugar, not syrup and apparently this makes a difference! They make other sodas too, not just cola.

Southern peaches in NYC?
If anyone in Brooklyn is looking, I've been getting Georgia peaches at Pacific Green on Court St. in Cobble Hill. I haven't had to let them sit to ripen and they've been delicious. The ones I got yesterday were huge, too.
NY-NJ Coffee roasters
D'Amico's at 309 Court St. in Brooklyn has been roasting their own beans on the premises for ages and ages. Great prices and a huge number of beans to choose from. One of the few old-school places remaining in an increasingly gentrifying neighborhood, and well worth going out of your way to patronize.
How Do You Like Your Pasta?
I'll echo Kerosina's reply - "daily!" With the exception of those mayo-type salads, I've never met a pasta I didn't like. I remember my first taste of pesto like it was a religious awakening. I've been known to eat enough to make myself sick, and my secret shame in college was that I actually liked the dining hall pasta slop. Aaaaah, pasta!
How to Cope with the NYC Rental Kitchen?
There was a book out a couple of years ago called the Itty Bitty Kitchen Handbook, written by a guy who (I think) had grown up on a boat with a tiny galley kitchen. I can't vouch for the book personally, but it might be worth paging through at your local bookstore to see if it has any useful ideas.
One thing that works for me in my small NY kitchen is a baker's rack against the back wall, to supplement my very limited cabinet and counter space. It's a modular unit from the Container Store, was very reasonable and holds a good amount of stuff.
Good luck!
Vintage Cereal Box Gallery
Quisp totally ruled over Quake. Although Cap'n Crunch was my first love. My brother and I sent away for these oddly-shaped Cap'n Crunch bowls. His was red, mine was blue, and nothing in the world could induce me to ever, EVER, eat from that red bowl. Cooties, you know. Li'l brother would typically eat about 4 bowls of cereal a day, without milk. He tried everything on the market, but I don't think he's eaten cereal since college. Reached his quota, I guess!
Sam's, a Cobble Hill Fixture Long on Character
I love Sam's!!! I've been going there for about 12 years now and never waited that long for service, but I've probably just been lucky because Louis has his hands full doing everything, as Adam noted. Not to mention taking time to tease the kids, chat with the regulars, etc. He runs the place the way he wants it, and doesn't pretend to suck up to customers who can't appreciate his singular charms. But put yourself in his hands and with the right attitude - knowing you'll get authentic personality along with awesome pizza - and you'll come away very, very happy, and looking forward to another visit. As far as their wine and beer selections - nothing special to write about, other than to say "yes, they have wine and beer!"
WTF pita?
Mmm, these all sound delicious. I also like to cut chunks of tomatoes and cucumbers into tuna and stuff that into pita as a substitute for the usual tuna sandwich on bread.
Manhattan: Joe Junior
Burger porn at its finest, and meant in the nicest possible way. Congrats on a great inaugural post. I'm so craving this burger right now!
Dinner Tonight: Pesto Trapanese
I've made pesto with oregano and walnuts along with generous amounts of garlic and think it's just amazing.
Eating for Two: What to Eat While Pregnant
Congrats! Here's a story my 12 year-old loves (she loves to hear about when I was pregnant). I had to make a deal with my pregnant tummy (which was kinda repulsed by coffee) and the rest of me (which really needed a little caffeine to wake up). If my tummy let me have a couple of sips every morning without nausea, the rest of me would wake up with such severely truncated caffeine levels. It seemed to work, and I have a great, healthy kid.
Don't get freaked out by unrealistic advice, enjoy cookies, and most of all, enjoy your pregnancy if at all possible. It looms very large (as do you, eventually) while it's happening, but in the scheme of your child's life, it's a mere blip.
And yeah, breastfeeding is great for burning calories!
Eating for Two: What to Eat While Pregnant
I know it's been a year since you wrote this, but I typed in "what to eat while pregnant", and this came up. I was wondering how everything was going with the new baby? We have sooo much in common, it's strange.
Anyway, thank you for easing my mind. I have been eating these chocolate, peanut butter crispy meltaway candies I make like crazy. I justify it by the fact they are organic chocolate and natural peanut butter and high in fiber. LOL. I'm only @ 2 months along. I found out on May 26th I'm pregnant. I'm due January 29th, 2010. I am trying to stay away from the place in my town that makes the best chocolate malt PB milkshakes. Not an easy task, I pass it a few times a week. Well thank you again for the info, I'd love to hear more. :) T.
Hanci Turkish Cuisine, a Much Needed Turkish Restaurant in New York
Ed I think Hanci read your review... because we ordered delivery last night and all of the meat on the mixed grill was cooked perfectly- pink in the middle, and not dry at all. (A tough feat to pull off for delivery)
And the mixed appetizer plate was as delicious as you described. Thanks for the rec!

i, too, visited HANCI with a group of ten and we had no trouble getting excellent service. the hosts were very accommodating. i particularly like the atmosphere of the restaurant. we ordered nearly everything on the menu; it was all presented beautifully and cooked perfectly. i ordered a sampler appetizer plate, the levrek, and the kazandibi (the first time i have tried this & i can't stop thinking about it). i ate some of my neighbor's braised lamb (on special that evening) which was just incredible. being a chef, i am very fussy about the preparation of my food. i recommend HANCI. i can't wait to go back. also, the prices are quite reasonable.
NY-NJ Coffee roasters
I carry Intelli as well as Novo and Ecco at our shop in Northern NJ. So if your feeling like Black Cat, we got it.

Thank you for all your suggestions!
Grace did an awesome roundup of restaurants doing homemade sodas.
Hanci Turkish Cuisine, a Much Needed Turkish Restaurant in New York
First, I have honestly never posted a comment on a message board but felt the great desire after eating at the Hanci Restaurant in Manhattan. Truly amazing! We were a group of ten people who ordered a complete array of appetizers, entrees and deserts and not one us was unhappy or unsatisfied, simply impressed. I was thrilled to get to eat turkish food because I lived there for three years but don't have any quality turkish food where I live now (Minnesota). The cook did it right! The kebabs were spectacular, my friend loved his levrek and the esme and patlican were awesome. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The owners were also incredibly hospitable and amiable (in true turkish form!) and played wonderful turkish music both halk (folk) music and pop music. It was a lovely evening and I will most assuredly go back when I'm in New York again. Afiyet olsun!

A lot, if not most, brewpubs make their own Root Beers. Orange Cream and Ginger Ale also show up with regularity. I believe some Microbreweries do also, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Hot Lips Pizza in Portland, Oregon makes awesome sodas. Get a blackberry soda on tap in the summertime, and it'll have bits of berries still in it. So fantastic!

In Manhattan, Per Se, Jean Georges, Nougatine, Perry Street, Bar Room at the Modern, Jane. And if you ask, any respectable cocktail bar should be able to make you a ginger soda with house-made ginger beer.

Hanci Turkish Cuisine, a Much Needed Turkish Restaurant in New York
Really? Have you not been living in the city for the past 2 years? I first visited Turkey in the summer of 2006 and upon my return started noticing an uptick of openings of Turkish restaurants. Aside from Pasha, Beyoglu, Turkish Kitchen and Sevens, there is also Zeytin and Bodrum both on the UWS. There is a small little place on Lex Peri Ela. There is Turks & Frogs in Tribeca. Pera in Midtown. And all of these off the top of my head. While the numbers can't compare to say Italian or French restaurants in NYC, I would say you haven't looked very hard if you could only name two.

Like Turkish Cuisine as well -- has charming 'wow' factor for out-of-town guests...

I second Peri Ela, @mwheeler. I also like Seven's on W. 72nd, between B'way and A'dam. They have a hummus with Turkish pastrami that is out of this world.

Please don't ignore little mom and pops like Uskudar on the Upper East Side! Dervish is good and pretty authentic, in the theater district.

This reminds me of one of my first upscale dining experiences. Can't remember exactly when it was, but it was the eighties. I begged my parents to take me to Anatolia, a classy Turkish restaurant on the East Side, after I heard they had tavuk göğsü, a chicken breast mousse dessert, and it sounded so outrageous that I really wanted to taste it.
