United States of Pizza: Michigan

My Michigander boyfriend swears by La Cantina in Paw Paw (S.W. area). They do an oblong pizza, not a round one, and although as a New Yorker I'm partial to NY style, La Cantina is pretty good. Anyone else familiar with it?

10 of Our Favorite Pancakes in America

We're in Lee, MA to pick up the kid from camp. We decide to skip the sure-to-be-crap b-fast that comes with the hotel room and find a place in town. There's a run-down-looking diner around the corner that serves only breakfast and lunch. The waitress is missing some teeth, has clearly been there forever, and has the attitude to prove it. I'm always hoping that places like this will turn out to be hidden gems... but somehow they never are. This one was! I have no idea what it's name is, and we haven't made it back. But I still dream about those pancakes.

Couldn't believe my eyes when I scrolled down and saw that bonus material. Too freakin' funny! And for the record, Ben's Pizzeria definitely looks better, from the pictures.

Cook the Book: Lemon Curd Squares with Rosemary

Lucy's Lemon Squares from the Peanuts Cookbook was the first thing I ever learned to bake all by myself. Hard to imagine improving upon them, but these might!

The Macadamia: The Toughest Nut to Crack

Makes me wonder how macadamia nuts were discovered to be edible in the first place, and how they were opened way back then. Same with coconuts. Who first thought "hey, I wonder if there's something good to eat inside that thing?" Yeah, I'm a nerd!

Market Scene: Copley Square Farmers' Market in Boston, MA

That photo at the top looks so good that the phrase "corn porn" popped into my head. Is that wrong?

Love these cups, and for some reason found myself so touched to learn that the designer was a Holocaust survivor.

Chicken Pizza: It Doesn't Suck

Can we add another element to the mix? How about the chicken-and-broccoli or chicken-and-tomato slice? When I'm looking for a filling, inexpensive lunch that incorporates many food groups, adding the vegetable to the chicken fits the bill. Heresy?

Calvin Trillin Pins Down Infamously Peripatetic Szechuan Chef Peter Chang

Read this story on the subway heading to work this morning. Reading Trillin on any topic is always worthwhile. Reading him on food is altogether transporting. What I wouldn't give to have a meal with that man...

Know Any Restaurant or Bar with Homemade Sodas?

Bubby's makes their own soda; was at the Tribeca location this past Friday. I'm not a soda drinker, but the Coke-fiend boyfriend, who was initially skeptical of homemade cola, was very, very happy. It's made with cane sugar, not syrup and apparently this makes a difference! They make other sodas too, not just cola.

Hanci Turkish Cuisine, a Much Needed Turkish Restaurant in New York

I love Peri Ela on Lexington between 90/91st. It's a beautiful, intimate space and the food is delicious.

Best Brisket in NYC?

I haven't tried this recipe: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2007/06/brisket_baby/.
But her lasagna was unbelievably delicious, for what it's worth. Good luck!

I need me some bacon!

I'm told that when I was a youngster of 5 or so, I proposed a combination of my two favorite foods as a breakfast option, asking my mother for a bacon and spaghetti sandwich. I can't imagine why this request was not fulfilled!

Southern peaches in NYC?

If anyone in Brooklyn is looking, I've been getting Georgia peaches at Pacific Green on Court St. in Cobble Hill. I haven't had to let them sit to ripen and they've been delicious. The ones I got yesterday were huge, too.

NY-NJ Coffee roasters

D'Amico's at 309 Court St. in Brooklyn has been roasting their own beans on the premises for ages and ages. Great prices and a huge number of beans to choose from. One of the few old-school places remaining in an increasingly gentrifying neighborhood, and well worth going out of your way to patronize.

How Do You Like Your Pasta?

I'll echo Kerosina's reply - "daily!" With the exception of those mayo-type salads, I've never met a pasta I didn't like. I remember my first taste of pesto like it was a religious awakening. I've been known to eat enough to make myself sick, and my secret shame in college was that I actually liked the dining hall pasta slop. Aaaaah, pasta!

How to Cope with the NYC Rental Kitchen?

There was a book out a couple of years ago called the Itty Bitty Kitchen Handbook, written by a guy who (I think) had grown up on a boat with a tiny galley kitchen. I can't vouch for the book personally, but it might be worth paging through at your local bookstore to see if it has any useful ideas.

One thing that works for me in my small NY kitchen is a baker's rack against the back wall, to supplement my very limited cabinet and counter space. It's a modular unit from the Container Store, was very reasonable and holds a good amount of stuff.

Good luck!

Vintage Cereal Box Gallery

Quisp totally ruled over Quake. Although Cap'n Crunch was my first love. My brother and I sent away for these oddly-shaped Cap'n Crunch bowls. His was red, mine was blue, and nothing in the world could induce me to ever, EVER, eat from that red bowl. Cooties, you know. Li'l brother would typically eat about 4 bowls of cereal a day, without milk. He tried everything on the market, but I don't think he's eaten cereal since college. Reached his quota, I guess!

Sam's, a Cobble Hill Fixture Long on Character

I love Sam's!!! I've been going there for about 12 years now and never waited that long for service, but I've probably just been lucky because Louis has his hands full doing everything, as Adam noted. Not to mention taking time to tease the kids, chat with the regulars, etc. He runs the place the way he wants it, and doesn't pretend to suck up to customers who can't appreciate his singular charms. But put yourself in his hands and with the right attitude - knowing you'll get authentic personality along with awesome pizza - and you'll come away very, very happy, and looking forward to another visit. As far as their wine and beer selections - nothing special to write about, other than to say "yes, they have wine and beer!"

Mmm, these all sound delicious. I also like to cut chunks of tomatoes and cucumbers into tuna and stuff that into pita as a substitute for the usual tuna sandwich on bread.
