Dinner Tonight: Fried Egg Sandwich
When I was a very small child, my mother was bedfast, and a fried egg sandwich was the ONLY thing my older knew how to cook. Consequently, I ate much more than my fair share and in my later adult years, I could not bear the thought of eating a "fried egg sandwich". However, your version has helped me move on and enjoy this simple, yet wonderful, staple of American life once again!!! Thank you.
Grilling: Pizza
We "grilled" pizza on our smoker (Big Green Egg) last weekend. We had so much trouble getting the dough transferred off the pizza peel onto the pizza stone in the grill, we ended up just doubling it over and making calzones! I will definitely try cooking the pizza on a cookie sheet first and then transferring to grill. What a great idea - Thanks!!

The proper response to this quandary truly lies in the writer's relationship with the "hostess". Is she a good friend or a family member? If so , bake the daggone brownies she requested and go. If she is not a friend or family - tell her no, but don't expect to be invited for any more bbq's.

Help! Whoopie Pies...
I made the pumpkin whoopie pies over the weekend. While I did need to bake them slightly longer than the recipe recommended, I must say they were wonderful. The spices in the cake part were perfect and they were sticky to the touch. All in all, a wonderful recipe!!

Serious Heat: Homemade Kimchee
Can you make it with regular cabbage?? I have a garden full of cabbage and I can only eat so much sauerkraut.
Death of the Girl Scout Cookie?
When one hears "Girl Scouts", the next immediate thought is "Cookies!!", so I can see why they may want to broaden their image a bit. That being said, there is no reason to simply stop cookies sales. The girls learn quite a bit from selling cookies - salesmanship, responsibility, etc. - and the rest of get to enjoy a variety of yummy cookies!!
I'm so old that I remember (food style)...
I don't recall Bobby Sherman records - but I do remember "Archies" records on the back of Honeycomb boxes. I was not fond of the cereal, but I had to have the records!!
I'm so old that I remember (food style)...
I remember school milk that came in little glass bottles with a paper cap. I also remember saving the frozen oj "cans" and using them for hair rollers. My grandparents owned a neighborhood grocery and I remember filling a little brown bag with penny candy - my favorite were little flying saucer shaped things that melted like communion wafers and had little candies inside - and wax candy lips! I remember going to Hogan's meat market right next to my Grandma's store to get meat and 7-Up flavored pushups.
Weird parental food preparation
My mother was a wonderful cook, but she had a lot of hungry mouths to feed and she had to make a little go a long way. One dish we had often was something she called "Shipwreck". I have no idea how it got the name, but it was browned ground beef and onion, with a can or two of tomato soup and cubed potatoes tossed in. She then baked it for at least an hour (so the potatoes would not be crunchy) and then at the last minute, she would top it with slices of American cheese. I loved it as a kid, but my husband and daughter are not so fond of it.
Grossest thing found in restaurant food
My husband and I were dining in a small mexican restaurant on the westside in Cincinnati, Ohio. They made the best taco salads (with ranch dressing!!!). My husband was just about finished with his usual - seafood burrito - when he found a long black hair underneath the last of the burrito on his plate. We showed it to the owner/manager and she just shrugged her shoulders and said since he had already eaten most of the burrito, she couldn't comp his meal. We left, never to return. Thankfully, they are no longer in business - at that location anyway!!
Help! Whoopie Pies...
I just made Pumpkin Whoopie Pies from an old issue of Rachael ray's magazine and they came out great. I had to bake them a few minutes more than the recipe said as they were still under done but otherwise they were great. I wonder why this happened to yours. I have no help for you. Sorry.
Help! Whoopie Pies...
I made those whoopie pies a couple weeks ago, and they turned out great. They made more than a dozen, though - did anybody else have that happen? I think I ended up with enough cookies to make 18 whoopie pies. I ran out of frosting, so for the extra 12 cookies, I made a brown sugar glaze (butter, brown sugar, milk) and sprinkled them with minced crystallized ginger and toasted pecans. They were kind of like muffin tops or mini cakes. Very tasty!
Dinner Tonight: Fried Egg Sandwich
Breakfast for dinner is always right!
I'm with senorjames. I just made one of these by tossing the prosciutto in the pan then cracking the egg on top of it. I prefer "over medium" eggs with that hot yellow jelly oozing out rather than a runny yolk all over the plate.
Dinner Tonight: Fried Egg Sandwich
I don't know, it still sounds like breakfast to me.
Dinner Tonight: Fried Egg Sandwich
I do love a good fried egg sammy. I went out and bought some chickens just so I could have FRESH eggs for these type of sandwiches. Too bad pigs just don't lay strips of bacon. LOL
Dinner Tonight: Fried Egg Sandwich
I like mine pretty much basic. Toast, one or two eggs, some kind of cheese and either yellow mustard or chunky salsa. That's comfort food for me.
Dinner Tonight: Fried Egg Sandwich
Just scanned my email after 5 hours heavy work on book since 5 AM, hungry, etc., not even dressed! I'm going to quit right now and make that egg on English muffin sandwich!! Have some blueberries with it, and a cup of homemade cappucino (skim milk and instant espresso)
I like hamburgers on toasted English muffins. Also make cheese and tomato and basil melts with bacon on the muffins. Have to be well-toasted, or they're awful.
I too used to love, in NYS, fried egg sandwich on a crisp roll with seeds--can't find that here in Florida for whatever reason. French hamburger rolls from Publix are quite good, especially if you crisp them just 30 seconds (and I pull out the doughy interior besides before using for a sandwich).

Death of the Girl Scout Cookie?
I have as long as i can remember been a fan of girl scout cookies. i had different ways of eating the specific type; samoas in the fridge or even freezer, thin mints, with milk, bite opposite ends of the cookie off just a bit, and suck the milk through the middle...the cookie got soft and milk soaked, and the coating kept it whole, and when you popped it in your mouth and chewed it...WOW, same way for tagalongs...A signifigant part of me is saddened by the thought...but i offer an alternative for interested parties.
Come see what i have been up to in the kitchen. I keep tabs with the newsletter and love it, it gives me brief respite from the day.
Everyone for your consideration, i humbly and thankfully give you

Grilling: Pizza
We tryed grilled pizza on the gasser this weekend. Prepared a simple dough with 3 c. flour, 1 c. water, 1 tsp. yest, salt and a couple of Tbsp. olive oil. One rising, then divided into 4 balls and refridgerated for about 6 hours. Brought to room temp before grilling.
Set grill on high one side and other off. Pressed out dough on parchment strips. Oiled top well, then flipped over onto cool side. Dragged over to hot side with tongs. Cooked up beautifully. Topped and place bakc on grill. Started on hot side until dough was done, then moved over to cool side to finishing melting cheese.
Yum Yum
Grilling: Pizza
Just had my first attempt at grilling pizza this past weekend. I went with the cookie sheet method and it worked wonderfully. I erred on the side of caution and was generous with the olive oil on both sides of the crust but had absolutely no sticking. Another advantage of the cookie sheet method is that flipping it is super easy - just pick up the sheet and dump the crust on the grill on the other side.
For the dough I used that 101 cookbooks recipe, but used about half whole wheat bread flour.
This weekend I'm going be courageous and go for grilling directly on the grate! Thanks for this post and the other helpful comments~
Grilling: Pizza
We have a gas grill with 3 horizontal burners. We also use an inexpensive square kiln shelf (purchased from a pottery supply company for 25% of what you'd pay for a pizza stone that's made from the same stuff). We use a lower, indirect fire and put a generous handful of corn meal under the pizza. We also tend to use pre-formed corn meal crusts for our pizzas. However, we cook/roast a huge variety of breads, meats, veggies, etc. on the grill...often using the stone to spread the heat. Especially during the summer, this helps with keeping the house cooler and the a/c bills lower.
Grilling: Pizza
Not to be too different, but would it be possible to just buy one of those better brands of frozen pizza's at the grocery store and put it on the grill?
I have one of those "Grill Grate's", and am thinking of experimenting using it to grill a pizza. Iam talking about a gas grill, with the lid down....
Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
Just to let everyone know I emailed the hostess told her I was not comfortable making something I'd never made before (worried that it wouldn't turn out) so I said I'd bring my tres leche cake that I had made before and I hoped would fit her theme. She said great, thanks. I brought it, it was good, all the food was good and we had a good time. The best part? There were tons of kids at the bbq who loved the cake and even the hostess said it was prob better than spicy brownies.
Thanks for all the posts btw. Very entertaining.
Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
Don't let "hostess"'s lack of consideration get to you. As others have mentioned, maybe she's self-involved, or incompetent & the party is overwhelming her.
In any case, promptly (within 24 hours) reply that "her suggestion was interesting" (or whatever wording makes it clear that you don't take orders from her, yet isn't confrontational). And, you're sure you can figure out something to fill out the dessert table by the weekend.
Then, make or purchase something nice. Please don't denigrate yourself with the temptation to be stingy or uncooperative. There's gonna be others at the BBQ who are probably lovely people who maybe are completely unaware of the hostess' clumsiness. Enjoy them, and yourself. GL
Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
Not churros; not so easy if you're new to making them. Also, they taste best when freshly made and still warm, maybe not possible at a BBQ.
Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
I think there is waay too much over reaction to this. Most of the suggested solutions will humiliate the hostess and are guaranteed to end the friendship. Maybe the hostess is just overly excited about throwing a theme party and forgot not everyone else is as enthusiastic? Maybe she interpreted the offer to bring something as bring/cook anything? Or maybe she really is just rude. In any case, if you like her and want to go to the BBQ but don't want to try your hand at her dish, I say take the high road. Tactfully tell her that you are not comfortable cooking Mexican Brownies, and then offer to bring X (insert whatever favorite dessert you can whip up fabulously).
Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
Simply don't go too rude for me to deal with no-matter who she is. Do you really need someone like that in your life? E-mail her your regrets. Have your own BBQ and do your own menu. Thats what I would do but I am too harsh for some but you only have so much time on EARTH . Ladies and Gentlemen "START YOUR COALS"

Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
Utterly tactless. Do your own thing. Enough food will surely go around and no one will notice, and maybe, just maybe, no one will care but I hope its good enough that they will.
surrah
Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
I think that is pretty rude. I say you make some regular old Duncan Hines and put a teensy sombrero on top.

@chardonnay...I was going to suggest a little herbal addition myself...lol.

Maybe you could find some Marijuana and add that to the mix. A good time will be had by all.
Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
First of all, I am of Mexican descent and have never heard of "Mexican Chocolate brownies"... WTF?! Mexican's in Mexico don't make brownies!
Second, Boy what a rude B*tch to decline an offer and then to ask you for something specific?! And a weird request at that!
All I can say is that I'd bring "whatever" to her party... as long as its good, she'd have nothing to complain about.
If you want to bring something "mexican", try Bunuelos. They sell them at most Mexican supermarkets. I am in So-Cal and these are easy to find in a store called Gigante. Just thinking about yummy Bunuelos, I'm not pissed anymore - YUM!

On second thought, it's a barbeque, bring an ice cold watermelon!

You asked and she said no. Go with what you want to bring or don't go and if she asks why, tell her she's no friend.
