Twix Java in the DC area

I'm not a huge candy bar person, but I am dying to try a Twix Java, since the reviews of it online by several bloggers is awesome. I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Has anybody in the DC area seen it around anywhere? I'll pay someone to ship a few to me if you have been able to find it elsewhere..thanks!

How long to brine a turkey for

I'm brining a turkey for the first time this year and was going to follow Alton Brown's Good Eats Roast Turkey recipe. (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_8389,00.html)

However, I'm confused b/c Alton's recipe says to brine the turkey for 6 hours; however, a lot of sites I've been reading up on say a minimum of 24 hours for a brine. Can anybody give me a clear answer based on their own brining expertise; especially if you've tried Alton's recipe? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Wedding Eats

When my husband and I got married, we were pretty poor and our parents weren't really contributing - so we served a buffet brunch at our reception (the ceremony was in the morning, reception right after). It wasn't fancy, but I think everybody enjoyed it and it was more affordable than dinner or a sit-down meal.

I haven't been to many weddings, though I am attending one in St. Croix, USVI in a couple of weeks - the bride is a native Cruzan and is serving foods unique to the islands - VERY excited about it and can't wait to find the local eats on the island!

Life Without the Momofuku Pork Bun

Anybody in the metro DC area, Bob's Noodle House in Rockville makes a "Taiwanese Hamburger" that is the same idea as the bun above - a steamed bun with pork belly, but with pickled mustard greens instead of the cucumbers - and only $3, I think - it's very good.

so many great meals prepared by mom ... hard to think of just one, but I guess I'd have to say all the great noodle soups she made me when I was a kid and not feeling well, and her egg rolls, dumplings, etc. Ah, and the scallion pancakes she would make for me as a snack when I got home from school..

I'm off to NYC..

@chiff0nade: I did see it last night!! But I would have put it down even if I didn't see it b/c I went to NYC in March and got that very cookie for myself - it was freshly baked and the best cookie I've ever had. :)

Food for a stressed student stomach?

When I was in college, I tried to keep my routine healthy during exams just as I did year round - still exercised every day, ate healthfully, etc. - it made me feel more energized and capable of handling exams/papers/etc. I usually kept my diet as simple as possible - always get a good bfast - mix of protein & fiber (my favorite was hard boiled eggs and oatmeal). Snacked on yogurt, fruit, etc. Good luck, you'll do fine and then you'll be done soon!

I'm off to NYC..

I was in NYC for only a day a couple months ago so I had to really pick and choose what I wanted to do. I think it's impossible to choose just 3, but here are mine, and these are just the first 3 that come to mind.. you're lucky to be there for a whole week!

1) Levain Bakery for a chocolate chip walnut cookie.

2) Pearl Oyster Bar for a lobster roll.

3) Di Fara for pizza.

starting a food blog ........

onepercent99, I am not nearly creative enough to help as much as some of the folks on this thread. I just want to say that I think your blog sounds like a great idea, and would be super-helpful for folks like me that aren't all that experienced with meats - I usually stick with the safe/basics that I know and would love to learn more and venture outside - also, money-saving tips when it comes to meat are a GREAT idea. (congrats again, hehe!). Keep us posted if you do start one - I'll definitely visit often!
