SE Staff Picks: Our Favorite Food Souvenirs to 'Smuggle' Home

Kenji, I was looking at the US Customs website, and they do have a ruling allowing jamon iberico/serrano into the US. A ruling made in response to a tariff classification ruling goes as follows:

"The applicable subheading for Serrano and Iberico cured ham, if boneless, will be 0210.19.0090, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for meat and edible meat offal, salted, in brine, dried or smoked; edible flours and meals of meat or meat offal, meat of swine, other, other. The rate of duty will be 1.4 cents pr kilogram."

The US does seem to allow jamon iberico, as long as you pay the duty.

How to Make Duck Larb with Chef Harold Dieterle of Kin Shop

That dish burned my mouth the first time I tried it...but I loved it nonetheless. Harold has been making some excellent Thai-influenced dishes at Kin Shop these past few months, dishes that I have enjoyed immensely. More power to him and his staff!

new momofuku milk bar cake truffle flavors

Had the strawberry lemon cake truffles tonight...it's like a tart lemon pound cake covered in strawberry crumble. Quite good, IMHO.

M. Wells Diner: A Fine Diner In Long Island City, Queens

Had dinner there twice already...definitely adventurous and inspired dishes, to be sure. Small but interesting wine list as well. If it weren't Lent, and if I didn't have high cholesterol, I would be there every week!

Taking Myself to NYC for 30th BDay... Where to eat THAT meal??

@ othermatt: You cannot go wrong with any of Michael White's places, although I would probably go to either Marea or Ai Fiori if you prefer a more upscale dining experience. If you must do David Chang, Momofuku Ko would be my suggestion, if you can snag one of those difficult-to-obtain resys online. Le Bernadin and Per Se, if you are willing to break the bank.

Went Tuesday morning to LES Doughnut Plant...only offered the passion fruit and rose petal doughnuts. No oatmeal, no choco chip and no salty peanut varieties. :-(

Sugar Rush: Fall Pies at Four & Twenty Blackbirds

I went there for breakfast last month...absolutely loved, loved the salted caramel apple pie! I also loved the tartness of the buttermilk custard pie. There was also a plum crumble that was also good. Can't wait to go back there for more!

Sugar Rush: Pumpkin Doughnuts at Doughnut Plant

Had the pumpkin doughnut this morning for breakfast...love the nutty and crunchy texture of the pumpkin seeds but wish the glaze had more pumpkin flavor. Apple cinnamon doughnut was also good.

Sugar Rush: Black Sesame and Pumpkin Cheesecake Soft Serve at Momofuku Milk Bar

Had all flavors last week. The black sesame soft serve is a more intense version of the ice cream served with the funnel cake for lunch at Momofuku Ko earlier this year. It is definitely nutty and probably a little too sesame-y for some people. I prefer the pumpkin cheesecake and dulce de leche flavors more: less intense yet unmistakeable as to their respective inspirations. This month's flavors are definitely an improvement from the previous cycles.

The Art of the Lunch Deal: Le Bernardin

The photos came out beautifully, Sid! Both meals were absolutely delicious, but IMHO the octopus trumped the salmon, while the cod was better executed compared to the skate. The tres leches cake was also superior to the chocolate-peanut butter tart. You also forgot to mention the 2008 Brindlmayer Riesling that we had with the meal: the wine had a perfect balance of floral and mineral notes that complimented the aromatics in the food very well.

Win Tickets To the "Asian Feastival" in Queens This Labor Day

Other than my native Philippine cuisine, I would say that my favorite Asian cuisine would have to be Thai, just for its bewitching ability to meld together both savory, spicy and sweet elements in each dish.

Had the doughnut the weekend before. Wish there was more peach in it but it's a good doughnut.

Fast Food International: Jollibee

Having grown up on McDonald's, I was prepared to hate Jollibee when I was first exposed to it many years ago in the Philippines. Although the burgers are not that great (McDonald's burgers are just as mediocre), I do love the Chicken Joy and the pancit palabok they serve, as well as the peach mango pie. They also served a taro-young coconut (ube-macapuno) pie and a footlong hotdog topped with shredded cheese in the Philippines, but they are not available here. The spaghetti is quite forgettable if not for the sweet sauce, which reminds me of the spaghetti my mother cooked for us when I was young.

The Art of the Lunch Deal: Momofuku Ssam Bar

I agree that the transition from Tien Ho to Tim Maslow and Ryan Miller was not smooth, and the menu suffered as a result. But as you mentioned, things are beginning to improve at Ssam Bar, and the menu continues to evolve and improve. I know it is offered only at dinner, but the fish dishes are to die for, especially the whole porgy. The pig ears may not be for everyone, but for someone who grew up with "sisig" in the Philippines, this dish is right up my alley. There is also a bluefish sandwich with potato chips that replaced the BBQ sandwich: it was nice but a bit too salty for my tastes. Pity that Don Lee is no longer there, but the cocktails remain.

The Art of the Lunch Deal: Má Pêche

I've had it a number of times, and it is just scrumptious! Tender and juicy, with a hint of a crust on the outside. The pork jus is flavored with orange marmalade and habanero peppers, providing just enough sweetness and heat to counteract the richness of the pork. The potatoes and peas are cooked in cream, which adds another layer of richness. Personally, I love the pork chop with the fried cauliflower.
