Increasing Portion Sizes: 20 Years Ago vs. Today

Nitpicky point, but... true, the bigass burger wasn't available at those places 20 years ago, but the smaller sizes still are. In fact, in a lot of cases, the smaller sizes are actually smaller than they were back then (1/10 lb now vs. 1/8 lb then). Except for the coffee (difference in tastes AND portions), the rest are very legitimate comparisons though. And a little scary.

Who has a good online site to order coffee?

DoorCountyCoffee.com does a good job with their mail-order business, and their coffee is outstanding. Lots of flavored coffees, but their non-flavored brews are great.

Cook the Book: Lidia's Italy

Something different every time, although in years past the default was lasagna. If it's a weeknight, beef burgundy in the crockpot works well, and if it's a weekend and clement out, some form of smoked barbecue is usually a winner. The most complex or fancy food we tend to serve guests is the dessert...

Cook the Book: The River Cottage Cookbook

We're starting hot peppers (every interesting kind I could find seeds for) and the standard herbs indoors right now. We'll put some in pots to stay indoors, and the rest will go into a planter near the front door.

With 2 young children, we haven't figured out how to keep our actual outdoor garden tended, so it will probably just have a few climbing ornamental vines. (Otherwise, the usual would be tomatoes, carrots, squash, leaf lettuce, and green peppers.)

I went to costarica and went to the Britt coffee platation. It was a very cool experience and I noticed that the coffee they grew was categorized by the land or placing of the beans. It let me learn alot about coffee not only as a drink but as a plant.

The website is down at the moment but a good company in TX is Addison Coffee Roasters. If you like flavored coffee this is one of the best in my opinion. You don't get a chemical aftertaste like you get with so many. "Jamaican Me Crazy" is my favorite! The website when it is up is www.addisoncoffee.com.

I'm a Peetnik and have been for several years now. I live in Ohio and get my coffee fairly quickly. Also, I get little freebies about once a year, which is always appreciated and they when have a special anniversary blend or their holiday blend, they'll send you a free sample of that. They're also really easy to deal with on the phone.

I recommend the following:

Intelligentsia -- particularly Zirinkana (Rwanda) and Finca Matalpa (El Salvador) for drip, and Black Cat for espresso.
Metropolis in Chicago
Terroir Coffee
Counter Culture

In L.A., try Monkey and Son (www.monkeyandson.com). You can buy their coffee at Surfas Chef's Paradise (www.surfasonline.com), which is open to the public. It's in Culver City.

Thank you everyone for these great suggestions. There is a new Intelligentsia shop in Silverlake (suburb of L.a.) and while I've heard great things about them I didn't know they deliver. I'll take a stroll over there and give them a taste! Of course, I may have to oversee a large-scale tasting between all of these operations--I'm just committed that way.

Sweet Maria's! They're the best, roasted or unroasted. I'm sipping their Sumatra right now. Yum!
